Scientific research and training in biotechnology in Latin America and the Caribbean: the UNU/BIOLAC experience
Daza,Camilo;
Electronic Journal of Biotechnology , 1998,
Abstract: it is well known that the number of researchers in biotechnology in latin america and the caribbean is too small to cope with the needs of research and to successfully confront the number of short and long-term problems. the united nations university created its biotechnology program for latin america and the caribbean, unu/biolac, and the results of the efforts aiming to the promotion of a shared sense of direction within the region′s scientific community are presented and discussed herein.

Aggio, Camilo;
Opini?o Pública , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-62762010000200006
Abstract: the growing importance of the uses of digital tools and devices related to the internet by candidates, parties and political campaign's crews in almost twenty years of the online campaign's existence produced emblematic cases like the election of barack obama in 2008. this paper organizes the major questions, discussions and contributions of the online campaign's literature. the whole work here is designed to organize, in a chronological manner, the advances of the preoccupations related to the use of the internet by candidates and political parties. in the same way, we bring in to the light the dynamic of changes in the treatments of the questions and the potential of the new technologies in the electoral contests. our results indicate that the literature changes the main focus of the preoccupations, discussions and de design of the empirical researches along the years, beginning with the interactivity potentials of the internet as well as the importance of the unmediated political information until reaching the actual phase of the online campaigns that emphasizes the engagement and mobilization potentials of the digital communications in line with the web 2.0 principles.
Tamayo,Camilo;
Signo y Pensamiento , 2006,
Abstract: as a cultural and aesthetic object, films manage to establish -like no other artistic expression- deep relations with the contexts and social dynamics where they are made. this paper aims at exploring, though briefly, the way in which the cinema in colombia has contributed to the construction of modernity; it also seeks to provide a closer look at the relations that can be established with the socially-built cultural imaginary. with these two purposes in mind, the first part of the paper is devoted to making a brief definition of modernity and showing how this trend has evolved in colombia, while the second part intends to describe how film-making was incorporated into the modernization process during a particular period of time, from 1900 to 1960.
"Like a porn movie": Notes on boundaries and bodies that matter in male sex clubs
Braz, Camilo;
Vibrant: Virtual Brazilian Anthropology , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1809-43412012000100005
Abstract: this article is based on ethnographic research carried out in male sex clubs in s?o paulo between 2006 and 2008. drawing on interviews conducted with club-goers and club owners, it discusses the recent segmentation of the sexual leisure market for men in the city, and the processes by which stereotypes and characteristics associated with virility are valued and performed. the possible effects of these processes on subjectivity constitution are also investigated. in sex clubs, sexual practices considered borderline, such as fist-fucking and other practices associated with bdsm, are material for specific and refined learning. the data gathered from interviews show that condom use and drug and alcohol consumption are subject to a sort of surveillance and control, especially when it comes to their questions of 'excess'. this control provides sex clubs with a sense of legitimacy, making them part of a viable erotic market. the intention here is to demonstrate the analytical interest of this control in the context of the construction of subjects and bodies that matter in these venues. like practices which evoke control or loss thereof, bodies and clubs need to have their excesses checked so that they are intelligible and desirable.
