DEVELOPMENT OF A MATURITY MODEL FOR TELEMEDICINE#
L. Van Dyk,C.S.L. Schutte
South African Journal of Industrial Engineering , 2012,
Abstract: ENGLISH ABSTRACT: For more than a decade, the South African National Department of Health (DoH) has recognised the potential benefit of information and communication technology (ICT) in the delivery of health care to rural areas. Despite generous funding and proven technology, not many telemedicine systems have proved sustainable after the pilot phase. The purpose of this paper is to develop a maturity model that can be implemented to measure and manage the capability of a health system, for use in the delivery of sustainable health care after the pilot phase of a telemedicine project. The validity of the telemedicine maturity model (TMMM) is tested within the context of the South African public health sector.

South African Journal of Industrial Engineering , 2012,
Abstract: ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Simulation modelling has been identified as one of the most powerful techniques available for the analysis and design of complex manufacturing systems. A number of manufacturing simulators have been designed in an effort to make it easier to use the simulation approach in the manufacturing environment. This paper will attempt to describe and ~valuate the characteristics of some of the available manufacturing simulators as well as possible ways to alleviate some of the inherent disadvantages. This paper will also report on the preliminary design philosophy and specifications of a manufacturing simulation program generator (FACSIM) presently under development.

TRENDS IN A SOUTH AFRICAN INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING RESEARCH JOURNAL: A TEXTUAL INFORMATION ANALYSIS PERSPECTIVE
J.W. Uys,C.S.L. Schutte,D. Esterhuizen
South African Journal of Industrial Engineering , 2012,
Abstract: ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Industrial engineering (IE) is a multi-disciplinary field, with its research borders broadening into a wide range of sub-disciplines. The South African Journal of Industrial Engineering (SAJIE) has been the official voice of IE research in South Africa for the past 22 years. In the interests of evaluating research scope, it is worth determining how IE fields have been covered by this journal. What are the current topics in IE, and how do they align with IE publication trends in other countries? This article attempts to investigate these issues in an objective way by using a text analytical technique to analyse the SAJIE publication collection. Due to the growth in the quantity of accessible textual information, and the growing importance of this type of information to business people and industrial engineers alike, the relevant text analytical method is also outlined.

Torres, C.S;Shaeffer, L.;
Matéria (Rio de Janeiro) , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-70762010000100011
Abstract: the purpose of this work is to analyze the effect of high energy milling on the morphology, particle size and compressibility of wc-ni composite. the hard metal is a composite material used in several areas of machining, mining and construction and can be applied directly to components of drilling equipment for oil and gas. the milling of hard metal wc-20ni, from the wc and ni powders, was performed for milling times of 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 hours. scanning electron microscopy and laser granulometry were used to follow the influence of milling time on the microstructure. this evaluation allowed to observe the morphological behavior and interaction between the components of the material produced. the results show that the milling time produces a reduction of particle size followed by particle agglomeration with sizes smaller than the components used in the preparation of composites.

Quaternary evolution of the Caravelas strandplain - Southern Bahia State - Brazil
Andrade, Ana C.S.;Dominguez, José M.L.;Martin, Louis;Bittencourt, Abílio C.S.P.;
Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0001-37652003000300008
Abstract: an evolutionary model is proposed for the caravelas strandplain. the model encompasses integration of: (i) mapping of quaternary deposits, (ii) cartography of beach-ridge alignments and their truncations, (iii) relative sea-level history, (iv) development history of the abrolhos coral reefs, (v) vibra-coring and (vi) c14 dating of quaternary deposits. seven major evolutionary stages were identified. these stages show that the strandplain has had its quaternary evolution strongly controlled by relative sea-level changes. in addition, the development of the abrolhos coral reefs has also played an important role in dispersion and accumulation of sediments along the coastline, causing localized inversion in longshore sediment transport.
