Abstract: genetic parameters and trends of weights were estimated for nellore cattle from central west and south east in brazil. abcz/embrapa provided weights (kg) at 120 (w120), 205 (w205), 365 (w365) and 540 (w540) for 86 852, 86 852, 61 637, 36 187 animals, respectively, from 1975 to 2001. parameters were obtained using mtdfreml in single trait analyses. fixed effects were contemporary group (dry or wet season), year, sex and farm and age of dam (linear and quadratic covariate). random effects were direct and maternal genetic effects, their covariance, and the uncorrelated maternal permanent environmental effect. the analysis was restarted until twice the logarithms of the likelihoods changed no more than two decimal places. estimates of direct and maternal genetic variances, direct-maternal covariance, and environmental and phenotypic variances were [51.1, 17.9, -12.0, 190.5 and 280.4] for w120; [128.6, 47.2, -25.9, 695.7 and 932.4] for w205; [435.9, 32.2, -27.4, 2934.0 and 3604.9] for w365; and [607.9, 177.7, -117.6, 5637.7 and 6602.5] for w540. direct heritabilities ranged from 0.09 to 0.18, maternal heritabilities from 0.01 to 0.06, direct-maternal genetic correlations from -0.23 to -0.36, and permanent environmental effects from 0.05 to 0.12. direct and maternal genetic and environmental trends from 1975 to 2001 were 10.4, -1.6 and 18.43 kg for w120; 16.6, -2.8; and 23.0 kg for w205; 21.7, -1.3 and 23.6 kg for w365, and, 25.5, -3.6, and -8.1 kg for w540, respectively. the direct genetic trends were positive and maternal trends were small. the importance of maternal performance for w120 and w205 suggests it should be considered in breeding programs although it has a low heritability and modestly adverse genetic correlation with direct genetic effects.

Abstract: in this work zirconia stabilized with itria films 8 mol% (8ysz) had been produced, applied as electrolytes for solid oxide fuel cell (sofc), deposited in quartz substrate spray-pyrolysis technique and treated at 1000oc. for attainment of films a system deposition for spray-pyrolysis modified according to patent deposited in inpi was used, that if compared with traditional system where atomized is static during deposition process, results in production of films more homogeneous, roughness and reduction of morphologic defects, at cracks. the improvements in deposition apparatus had also supplied better control of deposition parameters when compared with traditional system, with solution flow rate and temperature of deposition. the structure of films had been analyzed through x-ray diffractometry (xrd) results indicated that polycrystals films, structure cubical centered face of fluorite type with preferential orientation of grains in plan (111) identification through of standard jcpds # 821246. the films morphology was analyzed by optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy, being compared cracks, roughness and distribution of grains, for films after thermal treatment. the results indicate that the use deposited in modified method of spray-pyrolysis (mesp?) appropriate deposited films the deposited were dense, crack-free and well adhered to the substrates.

In situ variation of cervical mucus pH during exposure to atmospheric air

Abstract: the objective of the present study was to determine if exposure of cervical mucus to air during specular examination could modify mucus ph. detection of changes is justified because of their possible interference with sperm-mucus interaction, since an acidic ph is unfavorable to sperm penetration and is associated with infertility due to the cervical factor. twenty women with good quality mucus were evaluated. ph measurements of ecto- and endocervical mucus were made in situ using a glass electrode after 0-, 5- and 10-min exposure to air. there was a progressive alkalinization of mucus ph. mean values of ectocervical mucus ph were 6.91, 7.16 and 7.27, while mean values of endocervical mucus ph were 7.09, 7.34 and 7.46 at 0, 5 and 10 min, respectively. significant differences were found between the mean values obtained at 0 and 5 min, and at 0 and 10 min (p<0.05), whereas the differences in mean values at 5 and 10 min were not significant at either site. we conclude that 5 to 10 min of exposure to atmospheric air affects cervical mucus ph in a significant way. since tests used to evaluate sperm-mucus interaction generally have not considered this possibility, we suggest that they should be performed immediately after mucus collection in order to avoid misinterpretation of the results.

Abstract: We evaluated spine bone mineral density (BMD) in Brazilian children with juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (JSLE) in order to detect potential predictors of reduction in bone mass. A cross-sectional study of BMD at the lumbar spine level (L2-L4) was conducted on 16 female JSLE patients aged 6-17 years. Thirty-two age-matched healthy girls were used as control. BMD at the lumbar spine was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Weight, height and pubertal Tanner stage were determined in patients and controls. Disease duration, mean daily steroid doses, mean cumulative steroid doses and JSLE activity measured by the systemic lupus erythematosus disease activity index (SLEDAI) were determined for all JSLE patients based on their medical charts. All parameters were used as potential determinant factors for bone loss. Lumbar BMD tended to be lower in the JSLE patients, however, this difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.10). No significant correlation was observed in JSLE girls between BMD and age, height, Tanner stage, disease duration, corticosteroid use or disease activity. We found a weak correlation between BMD and weight (r = 0.672). In the JSLE group we found no significant parameters to correlate with reduced bone mass. Disease activity and mean cumulative steroid doses were not related to BMD values. We did not observe reduced bone mass in female JSLE.
