Building Social and Emotional Competence in School Children: A Randomised Controlled Trial  [PDF]

Abstract: Background: This randomised controlled trial took place in primary schools where teachers were already trained in the Incredible Years® (IY) teacher classroom management programme and where the universal IY Classroom Dinosaur School social-emotional skills curriculum was being delivered as part of the statutory Welsh personal and social education curriculum. Aims: The study examined whether the IY Small Group Therapeutic Dinosaur School programme had added benefits for children with identified behavioural, social, and/or emotional difficulties. Method: Children were screened for behavioural difficulties using the teacher-rated Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire and were eligible for study inclusion if teachers rated them as above the cause for concern cut-off on this measure. Two hundred and twenty-one children were randomised to intervention or wait-list control conditions. Assessments of behaviour and social-emotional competence were completed by multiple respondents, including teachers, children and researchers who completed blinded direct observations (on a subsample). Results: Multilevel modeling analyses showed improvements in the problem-solving knowledge of children in the intervention condition (ES = .39 for prosocial and .41 for agonistic solutions), compared to children in the control condition on the Wally Problem Solving measure. Intervention children were also significantly more likely to achieve teacher set social-emotional academic goals. Conclusion: This study shows limited but promising results for the addition of a targeted school-based social-emotional intervention delivered by teachers, alongside a similar class-wide universal curriculum, to young high-risk children.

Abstract: The present study investigated the influence of personality on exercise-induced mood changes. It was hypothesised that (a) exercise would be associated with significant mood enhancement across all personality types, (b) extroversion would be associated with positive mood and neuroticism with negative mood both pre- and post-exercise, and (c) personality measures would interact with exercise-induced mood changes. Participants were 90 female exercisers (M = 25.8 yr, SD = 9.0 yr) who completed the Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI) once and the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS) before and after a 60-minute exercise session. Median splits were used to group participants into four personality types: stable introverts (n = 25), stable extroverts (n = 20), neurotic introverts (n = 26), and neurotic extroverts (n = 19). Repeated measures MANOVA showed significant mood enhancement following exercise across all personality types. Neuroticism was associated with negative mood scores pre- and post-exercise but the effect of extroversion on reported mood was relatively weak. There was no significant interaction effect between exercise-induced mood enhancement and personality. In conclusion, findings lend support to the notion that exercise is associated with improved mood. However, findings show that personality did not influence this effect, although neuroticism was associated with negative mood
Prevalence and Infection Load Dynamics of Rickettsia felis in Actively Feeding Cat Fleas

Abstract: Background Rickettsia felis is a flea-associated rickettsial pathogen recurrently identified in both colonized and wild-caught cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis. We hypothesized that within colonized fleas, the intimate relationship between R. felis and C. felis allows for the coordination of rickettsial replication and metabolically active periods during flea bloodmeal acquisition and oogenesis. Methodology/Principal Findings A quantitative real-time PCR assay was developed to quantify R. felis in actively feeding R. felis-infected fleas. In three separate trials, fleas were allowed to feed on cats, and a mean of 3.9×106 R. felis 17-kDa gene copies was detected for each flea. A distinct R. felis infection pattern was not observed in fleas during nine consecutive days of bloodfeeding. However, an inverse correlation between the prevalence of R. felis-infection, which ranged from 96% in Trial 1 to 35% in Trial 3, and the R. felis-infection load in individual fleas was identified. Expression of R. felis-infection load as a ratio of R. felis/C. felis genes confirmed that fleas in Trial 3 had significantly greater rickettsial loads than those in Trial 1. Conclusion/Significance Examining rickettsial infection dynamics in the flea vector will further elucidate the intimate relationship between R. felis and C. felis, and facilitate a more accurate understanding of the ecology and epidemiology of R. felis transmission in nature.
Ozonolysis of α-pinene: parameterization of secondary organic aerosol mass fraction

Abstract: Existing parameterizations tend to underpredict the α-pinene aerosol mass fraction (AMF) by a factor of 2–5 at low organic aerosol concentrations (<5 μg m 3). A wide range of smog chamber results obtained at various conditions (low/high NOx, presence/absence of UV radiation, dry/humid conditions, and temperatures ranging from 15–40°C) collected by various research teams during the last decade are used to derive new parameterizations of the SOA formation from α-pinene ozonolysis. Parameterizations are developed by fitting experimental data to a basis set of saturation concentrations (from 10 2 to 104 μg m 3) using an absorptive equilibrium partitioning model. Separate parameterizations for α-pinene SOA mass fractions are developed for: 1) Low NOx, dark, and dry conditions, 2) Low NOx, UV, and dry conditions, 3) Low NOx, dark, and high RH conditions, 4) High NOx, dark, and dry conditions, 5) High NOx, UV, and dry conditions. According to the proposed parameterizations the α-pinene SOA mass fractions in an atmosphere with 5 μg m 3 of organic aerosol range from 0.032 to 0.1 for reacted α-pinene concentrations in the 1 ppt to 5 ppb range.
The orbit of the brown dwarf binary Gl 569B

Abstract: We present photometric, astrometric and spectroscopic observations of the nearby (9.8 pc) low-mass binary Gl 569Bab (in turn being a companion to the early-M star Gl 569A), made with the Keck adaptive optics facility. Having observed Gl 569Bab since August 1999, we are able to see orbital motion and to determine the orbital parameters of the pair. We find the orbital period to be 892 +/- 25 days, the semi-major axis to be 0.90 +/- 0.02 AU, the eccentricity to be 0.32 +/- 0.02 and the inclination of the system to be 34+/- 3 degrees (1-sigma). The total mass is found to be 0.123 (-0.022/+0.027) Msun (3-sigma). In addition, we have obtained low resolution (R=1500-1700) near-infrared spectra of each of the components in the J- and K-bands. We determine the spectral types of the objects to be M8.5V (Gl 569Ba) and M9V (Gl 569Bb) with an uncertainty of half a subclass. We also present new J- and K-band photometry which allows us to accurately place the objects in the HR diagram. Most likely the binary system is comprised of two brown dwarfs with a mass ratio of 0.89 and with an age of approximately 300 Myr.
A Hail Size Distribution Impact Transducer

Abstract: An active impact transducer has been designed and tested for the purpose of monitoring hail fall in the vicinity of the Space Shuttle launch pads. An important outcome of this design is the opportunity to utilize frequency analysis to discriminate between the audio signal generated from raindrop impacts and that of hailstone impacts. The sound of hail impacting a metal plate is sub-tly but distinctly different than the sound of rain impacts. This useful characteristic permits application of signal processing algorithms that are inherently more robust than techniques relying on amplitude processing alone in the implementation of a hail disdrometer.
The Discovery of a Companion to the Very Cool Dwarf Gl~569~B with the Keck Adaptive Optics Facility

Abstract: We report observations obtained with the Keck adaptive optics facility of the nearby (d=9.8 pc) binary Gl~569. The system was known to be composed of a cool primary (dM2) and a very cool secondary (dM8.5) with a separation of 5" (49 Astronomical Units). We have found that Gl~569~B is itself double with a separation of only 0".101$\pm$0".002 (1 Astronomical Unit). This detection demonstrates the superb spatial resolution that can be achieved with adaptive optics at Keck. The difference in brightness between Gl~569~B and the companion is $\sim$0.5 magnitudes in the J, H and K' bands. Thus, both objects have similarly red colors and very likely constitute a very low-mass binary system. For reasonable assumptions about the age (0.12~Gyr--1.0~Gyr) and total mass of the system (0.09~M$_\odot$--0.15~M$_\odot$), we estimate that the orbital period is $\sim$3 years. Follow-up observations will allow us to obtain an astrometric orbit solution and will yield direct dynamical masses that can constrain evolutionary models of very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs.

Abstract: In this study, RLM-RACE was used to identify the transcriptional start site 387 bp upstream of the translational start. Evolutionarily conserved transcription factor binding sites were identified, and a series of luciferase reporter constructs driven by BMPR2 promoter elements used to determine their functional relevance. We found the promoter area from 983 bp to 90 bp upstream of the transcriptional start gave maximal activity, greater than longer constructs, with an area between 570 bp and 290 bp upstream of the transcriptional start containing an important repressor element. To characterize this repressor, we used a combination of EMSA, mutation of the EGR1 binding site, transfection with EGR1 and NAB1 constructs, and mutation of the NAB1 binding site within the EGR1 protein. From this we conclude that EGR1 is essential to BMPR2 transcription, but that NAB1 binding to EGR1 causes it to act as a repressor.
