Polyphenols, Antioxidant Potential and Color of Fortified Wines during Accelerated Ageing: The Madeira Wine Case Study

Abstract: Polyphenols, antioxidant potential and color of three types of fortified Madeira wines were evaluated during the accelerated ageing, named as estufagem. The traditional estufagem process was set to 45 °C for 3 months. Overheating conditions, 1 month at 70 °C, were also examined. Total polyphenols (TP), total monomeric anthocyanins (TMA) and total flavonoids (TF) were assessed by spectrophotometric methods, while individual polyphenols and furans were simultaneously determined by HPLC-DAD. Antioxidant potential (AP) was estimated by ABTS, DPPH and FRAP assays, while color was evaluated by Glories and CIELab. Traditional e stufagem decreased the TP and AP up to 20% and 26%, respectively, with final values similar to other wines. TMA of the Madeira wines from red grapes decreased during estufagem. Six hydroxybenzoic acids, three hydroxycinnamic acids, one stilbene, three flavonols and three flavan-3-ols were found in these wines. The prominent phenolics were hydroxycinnamates and hydroxybenzoates, even after estufagem. Most polyphenols decreased, with the exception of caffeic, ferulic, p-coumaric, gallic and syringic acids. Finally, both chromatic systems revealed that all wines tended to similar chromatic characteristics after estufagem. The study suggests that estufagem can be applied without high impact on polyphenols and antioxidant potential of these fortified wines.

Abstract: Presentamos una figura de bisonte, completa en su perímetro, localizada recientemente en el panel principal de la cueva de Ekain. Fue realizada con bandas de raspado sobre alguno de los caballos pintados en ese lienzo, con un formato muy similar al de estos. Este hallazgo nos permite describir una modalidad técnica poco frecuente -más empleada como apoyo de otros procedimientos que para la definición en exclusiva de figuras completas- y ofrecer una visión algo más compleja de la construcción y de los comportamientos relejados en este importante panel magdaleniense.

Abstract: we present five cases of adrenal cortical carcinoma, diagnosed in our hospital and we describe the clinical presentation, diagnostic methods and treatement. it is a rare tumor, highly aggressive and prognosis is poor. the clinical presentation is characterized by a mass effect, symptoms caused by the invasion of the structures nearby or by a variety of hormonal changes, especially hypercortisolism and virilization. the diagnosis is based on the biochemical characterization of the hormonal profile and on imaging techniques, especially computed tomography and magnetic resonance. the treatment is generally surgical and the most effective chemotherapeutic agents are the adrenolytics (mitotane) alone or associated with doxorubicin, cisplatin and etoposide.

Abstract: The recent demonstration of saturable absorption and negative optical conductivity in the Terahertz range in graphene has opened up new opportunities for optoelectronic applications based on this and other low dimensional materials. Recently, population inversion across the Dirac point has been observed directly by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES), revealing a relaxation time of only ~ 130 femtoseconds. This severely limits the applicability of single layer graphene to, for example, Terahertz light amplification. Here we use tr-ARPES to demonstrate long-lived population inversion in bilayer graphene. The effect is attributed to the small band gap found in this compound. We propose a microscopic model for these observations and speculate that an enhancement of both the pump photon energy and the pump fluence may further increase this lifetime.
Tracking primary thermalization events in graphene with photoemission at extreme timescales

Abstract: Direct and inverse Auger scattering are amongst the primary processes that mediate the thermalization of hot carriers in semiconductors. These two processes involve the annihilation or generation of an electron-hole pair by exchanging energy with a third carrier, which is either accelerated or decelerated. Inverse Auger scattering is generally suppressed, as the decelerated carriers must have excess energies higher than the band gap itself. In graphene, which is gapless, inverse Auger scattering is instead predicted to be dominant at the earliest time delays. Here, $<8$ femtosecond extreme-ultraviolet pulses are used to detect this imbalance, tracking both the number of excited electrons and their kinetic energy with time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Over a time window of approximately 25 fs after absorption of the pump pulse, we observe an increase in conduction band carrier density and a simultaneous decrease of the average carrier kinetic energy, revealing that relaxation is in fact dominated by inverse Auger scattering. Measurements of carrier scattering at extreme timescales by photoemission will serve as a guide to ultrafast control of electronic properties in solids for PetaHertz electronics.

Abstract: objective: to review the main causes of new bronchopulmonary dysplasia and the strategies utilized to decrease its incidence in extremely low birth weight infants. data sources: for this review a medline search from 1966 to october 2004, the cochrane database, abstracts from the society for pediatric research and recent meetings on the topic were used. summary of findings: the survival of extremely low birth weight infants has increased significantly due to improvement in both scientific knowledge and technology. this improvement in survival has therefore resulted in an increased incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. the characteristics of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in extremely low birth weight infants, the so called "new" bronchopulmonary dysplasia are quite different from the classic bronchopulmonary dysplasia described by northway. this new bronchopulmonary dysplasia has a multifactorial etiology, which includes volutrauma, atelectrauma, oxygen toxicity and lung inflammation. therapy such as prenatal corticosteroids, exogenous surfactant, nasal continuous positive airway pressure, new mechanical ventilation modalities and gentle ventilation have been used in attempts to decrease lung injury severity. conclusions: in order to prevent lung injury in extremely low birth weight infants, it is necessary to minimize several factors that induce bronchopulmonary dysplasia and to utilize less aggressive therapeutic strategies. in addition to the current therapy used to decrease lung injury, knowledge of these causative factors may create new therapies that may be fundamental in improving the clinical outcomes of premature infants.

Abstract: objectives: to analyze using quantitative ultrasound of calcaneus (qus) the prevalence of osteoporosis in institutionalized elderly people, in order to contribute to state reliable criteria (t-score units) for the diagnosis of osteoporosis which allow advances in bone fracture prevention. material and methods: elderly people (n=171) were divided into separate groups according to sex and age criteria (three decades, from 70 to 90 years) and analyzed using qus. results: both globally and in the younger groups, women showed significantly lower values than men in all densitometry variables (p < 0.001). in the oldest group only t-score and bua showed statistical differences (p = 0.039 y p = 0.025, respectively). the prevalence of osteoporosis in women was higher than in men whichever criteria were applied in all age groups. applying the who criteria with qus, the prevalence of osteoporosis in global population is close to that stated by dexa using the same criteria. conclusions: qus could be useful to assess the bone mass evolution with age and for the diagnosis and monitoring of osteoporosis. in our elderly population, the who criteria for dexa, are also the most suitable ones for qus utilization.
