CORPORATE GOVERNANCE AND FIRM PERFORMANCE
Claudiu George BOCEAN,Ctlin M. BARBU
Management & Marketing , 2007,
Abstract: Good corporate governance is an important step in building market confidence and encouraging more stable, long-term international investment flows. Many countries see better corporate governance practices as a way to improve economic dynamism and thus enhance overall economic performance. This paper sets out to further develop our understanding of corporate governance and its effects on corporate performance and economic performance. In doing so, it addresses some of the underlying factors that promote efficient corporate governance, and examines some of the economic implications associated with various corporate governance systems. I provide an framework for understanding how corporate governance can affect corporate performance. In the wake of a literature survey, I find that corporate governance matters for economic performance, insider ownership matters the most, outside ownership concentration destroys market value, direct ownership being superior to indirect.
The Meanings of “Made in Romania” among the Romanian Consumers
Ctlin Mihail BARBU
Theoretical and Applied Economics , 2011,
Abstract: In this paper I studied the meanings of made in Romania concept among the Romanian consumers. The methodology required that respondents were interviewed about their attitudes. The results show that made in Romania has a negative connotation, and that made in Germany and made in USA are better appreciated. Still, made in Romania has obtained a better score than made in China. There are perspectives for the improvement of the meanings of made in Romania, the intentions of respondents being a guarantee. The people working in Romania obtained a better score than the results of their work, a warranty for future improvements of made in Romania appreciation.
BRANDING IN SMALL BUSINESS

Management & Marketing , 2010,
Abstract: In this paper we analyzed the branding in small business. Using a desk research on Internet and the press we have identified the practices small businesses use to enhance their brand and the brand dynamics in small business. Our main contribution is that we tried to figure out the strategy of branding in small business. This need further to be investigated in order to understand how branding works in small business and to better capture the role of branding in small business.
DETERMINING CONSUMERS’ PROPENSITY TO BUY ROMANIAN PRODUCTS
Liviu CR?CIUN,Ctlin Mihail BARBU
Management & Marketing , 2011,
Abstract: In this paper we investigated the sources of “Buy Romanian” attitude. Weformulated three constructs namely Buy Romanian, nationalism andinternationalism and we measured them by developing three scales. Thescales were included in a questionnaire that was administered to 110respondents. Performing statistical analysis, the results showed us that BuyRomanian is influenced by the general opinion toward the Romanianproducts and by nationalism orientation. There is no correlation among BuyRomanian and internationalism. These findings are useful because in orderto stimulate buying behavior of Romanian products by Romanian consumers,it is necessary to spot the deepest motivations.
PROFILE ANALYSIS OF THE EMPLOYEES OF COMMERCIAL BANKS IN ROMANIA
Tudor NISTORESCU,Ctlin Mihail BARBU,Valentin STANCIU
Management & Marketing , 2012,
Abstract: In this paper we tried to deliver a profile analysis of the employees from the commercial banks. The banking sector is especially important because it has to finance the entire economy, and therefore it needs competent and well-motivated people. As methodology we realized a survey on a representative number of employees of commercial banks. We used questionnaires measuring motivational factors, the orientation to tasks vs. people questionnaire, the potential leadership questionnaire, the Belbin self-knowledge questionnaire. The results showed that the employee from the Romanian commercial banks has a strong work-ethic and is highly motivated.
Impact of White Mistletoe (Viscum album ssp. abietis) Infection on Needles and Crown Morphology of Silver Fir (Abies alba Mill.)
Ct?lina O. BARBU
Notulae Botanicae Horti Agrobotanici Cluj-Napoca , 2012,
Abstract: Impact of White Mistletoe (Viscum album ssp. abietis) Infection on Needles and Crown Morphology of Silver Fir (Abies alba Mill.) The species affects silver fir stands located mainly at lower elevations on the Eastern border of the silver fir natural distribution area. Along with drought and pollution, white mistletoe infection plays an important role in silver fir decline. The present study tried to quantify the mistletoe impact on crown degradation of silver fir trees, by measuring several parameters such as needle length and needle loss. The data were collected from a pure silver fir stand where more than 70% of trees were affected by mistletoe. The results indicate that both mistletoe infection and branch position into the crown influence the needles length. The reduction in needle length was more evident in the upper and middle part of the crown and smaller in the lower part of the crown, as well as in the “compensation crown” (formed by epicormic branches). The difference between needle lengths increases with the infection degree. In moderately and heavily infected trees, needles are falling in high proportion compared with low infected trees, demonstrating that mistletoe is producing crown degradation significantly reducing the photosynthetic tissue.
Positive noise cross-correlations in superconducting hybrids: Role of interface transparencies
R. Mélin,C. Benjamin,T. Martin
Physics , 2007, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.77.094512
Abstract: Shot noise cross-correlations in normal metal-superconductor-normal metal structures are discussed at arbitrary interface transparencies using both the scattering approach of Blonder, Tinkham and Klapwik and a microscopic Green's function approach. Surprisingly, negative crossed conductance in such set-ups [R. Melin and D. Feinberg, Phys. Rev. B 70, 174509 (2004)] does not preclude the possibility of positive noise cross-correlations for almost transparent contacts. We conclude with a phenomenological discussion of interactions in the one dimensional leads connected to the superconductor, which induce sign changes in the noise cross-correlations.
On the Tidal Dissipation of Obliquity
T. M. Rogers,D. N. C. Lin
Physics , 2013, DOI: 10.1088/2041-8205/769/1/L10
Abstract: We investigate tidal dissipation of obliquity in hot Jupiters. Assuming an initial random orientation of obliquity and parameters relevant to the observed population, the obliquity of hot Jupiters does not evolve to purely aligned systems. In fact, the obliquity evolves to either prograde, retrograde or 90^{o} orbits where the torque due to tidal perturbations vanishes. This distribution is incompatible with observations which show that hot jupiters around cool stars are generally aligned. This calls into question the viability of tidal dissipation as the mechanism for obliquity alignment of hot Jupiters around cool stars.
Determination of the Source Flavor Ratio of Ultrahigh Energy Neutrinos
T. C. Liu,M. A. Huang,Guey-Lin Lin
Physics , 2010,
Abstract: We discuss the reconstruction of neutrino flavor neutrino at a distant source in the very high en- ergy regime. This reconstruction procedure is relevant to the confirmation of detecting cosmogenic neutrinos, for example. To facilitate such a reconstruction, it is imperative to achieve effective flavor discriminations in terrestrial neutrino telescopes. We note that, for energies beyond few tens of PeV, a tau-lepton behaves like a track similar to a muon. Hence, while it is rather challenging to separate {\nu}{\mu} from {\nu}{\tau} in this case, one can expect to isolate {\nu}e from the rest by a distinctive shower signature. We present the result of flavor ratio reconstruction given the anticipated accuracies of flavor measurement in neutrino telescopes and current uncertainties of neutrino mixing parame- ters. It is shown that the further separation between {\nu}{\mu} and {\nu}{\tau} events does not improve the flavor reconstruction due to the approximate {\nu}{\mu} - {\nu}{\tau} symmetry.
Crumpling wires in two dimensions
Y. C. Lin,Y. W. Lin,T. M. Hong
Physics , 2008, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevE.78.067101
Abstract: An energy-minimal simulation is proposed to study the patterns and mechanical properties of elastically crumpled wires in two dimensions. We varied the bending rigidity and stretching modulus to measure the energy allocation, size-mass exponent, and the stiffness exponent. The mass exponent is shown to be universal at value $D_{M}=1.33$. We also found that the stiffness exponent $\alpha =-0.25$ is universal, but varies with the plasticity parameters $s$ and $\theta_{p}$. These numerical findings agree excellently with the experimental results.
