Abstract: OBJETIVO: Realizar um estudo do tratamento das fraturas do c ndilo mandibular e discutir a terapêutica conservadora versus a cirúrgica. OBJECTIVE: To study the treatment of fractures of the mandibular condyle and discuss conservative versus surgical therapy. METHODS: We examined the medical records of 892 bucofacial traumas, from which we selected only those who had: reports of condylar fractures, isolated or associated with other facial bones, identification data, dental care history and treatment applied for the condylar fracture. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the conservative and surgical therapies were compared. RESULTS: Condyle fractures were present in 124 cases. Males represented 72.0% of the sample, the age group most affected being the one between 21 and 30 years. Conservative treatment was used in 61.0% of patients. CONCLUSION: Surgical treatment was predominantly used in patients over ten years old, victims of traffic accidents and falls, followed by assaults, firearms and sporting accidents.

Abstract: Masticatory function can be evaluated objectively as the capacity of an individual to fragment solid food after a fixed number of chewing cycles, the so-called masticatory performance (MP). The objective of this study was to evaluate the reliability of four different test materials (Optosil, Optocal, Zetapuls, and Perfil) and five disinfection protocols by aspersion and immersion (no disinfection, 2% glutaraldehyde, 2% chlorhexidine, 5.25% sodium hypochlorite, and 70% alcohol) on the MP, determined at three moments (24 hours, 15 and 60 days) after storing the fragmented blocks. MP was evaluated by calculating X50 through the sieving technique and the Rosim-Ramler equation. The weight and microbiologic count (colony forming units, CFUs) of chewed blocks were measured to identify any variations that would make MP determination unfeasible. Differences in MP were observed among the materials (p < 0.01). Perfil presented the highest X50 value (worst MP determination), followed by Zetaplus (both p < 0.05), Optosil, and Optocal (both p > 0.05). The time and disinfection type had no influence on MP (p > 0.05). The number of CFUs differed between the nondisinfected group and all other disinfection groups at all time points (p < 0.01). No other significant difference in CFU count between disinfection groups was observed. In conclusion, disinfection did not alter the reliability of the test materials for the MP calculation for up to 60 days.

Abstract: interlocking nails allow rigid fracture stabilization and present biomechanical advantages when compared to other immobilization techniques. it acts along the central mechanical axis of the bone and preserves biological concept standards for osteosynthesis. the use of interlocking nail in cats is limited because the intramedullary space is relatively small for the available nail sizes. we reported 10 cases of cats that had simple or multiple closed fractures of the femoral diaphysis. the animals weighed 3.5 to 5 kg , which allowed using nails of 4.0mm and 4.7mm in diameter. for the nail insertion, retrograde and normograde routs were used, and four 2mm titanium screws were used to lock all the perforations. no trans-surgical complication occurred, however, due to a new trauma, one of the animals suffered femoral neck fracture and transversal distal fracture to the nail, three days after surgery. radiographies were made up to four months after surgery, and in most cases secondary bone formation was seen, showing bone consolidation in 61-89 days, excluding the animal who suffered new trauma, who presented bone healing in 150 days. clinically, occasional lameness occurred; however, except for the animal that had new trauma, all animals initiated adequate limb support in 3 to 8 days after surgery. in conclusion, the use of 4.0mm and 4.7mm interlocking nails in felines was adequate, with bone healing in all cases, and also return of good limb function after surgery.

The present study aimed to select pre-cultivars of popcorn maize for registration in MAPA based on different characteristics, using the Garcia and total-classification indices, giving priority to grain yield and expansion capacity. Sixteen genotypes of popcorn maize: eight open-pollinated varieties (BRS Angela, UFVM2 - Bar o de Vi osa, Vi osa, Beija-Flor, SAM, UNB2U-C3, UNB2U-C4 and UNB2U-C5) and eight hybrids (Zelia, Jade, IAC 112, P1 x P3, P1 x P7, P2 x P4, P2 x P9 and P3 x P7) were evaluated in five environments. The experimental design was of randomized blocks with three replications, where the characteristics of plant height, growth, droop, expansion capacity and grain yield were evaluated. The effects of genotype and environment were significant for all characteristics, while their interactions were only significant for droop and grain yield. The Garcia and the total-classification indices correlated positively in the classification of genotypes, both indicating the pre-cultivars UNB2U-C5 and P1 x P7 as having the best performance for regions in the north and northwest of the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the physical quality of soil in pastures under continuous grazing. the pastures were established with bermudagrass coastcross (cynodon dactylon) intercropped or not with the perennial peanut (arachis pintoi). the intercropped pasture was fertilized with 0, 100 and 200 kg ha-1 nitrogen (n) per year and the single-cropped pasture was fertilized with 200 kg ha-1 n per year, totaling four treatments. the experiment was established in 2002 in a haplorthox (rhodic ferralsol) in paranavaí, northwestern of paraná, brazil, using a randomized complete block design, with two replications. between 2002 and 2007 the stocking rate was based on forage offer level. in march and november 2007, undisturbed soil samples were collected from 0-75 and 75-150 mm depths for the evaluation of soil bulk density, soil porosity, and soil air and water storage capacity. continuous grazing with stocking rates controlled as a function of the pasture production did not damage the soil physical quality. the soil water storage capacity is a sensitive indicator to assess the effects of stocking rate intensification on soil physical quality.
