Abstract: we sampled lepidopteran caterpillars on three byrsonima species (malpighiaceae) in central brazil: byrsonima crassa , byrsonima verbascifolia and byrsonima coccolobifolia between may 1993 and july 1994. fifteen individuals of each plant species were censused weekly. our main goal was to estimate the abundance and richness of lepidopteran larvae within each plant species. only 13% of the 1 621 sampled plants had caterpillars on their leaves. this percentage was similar within each plant species. we found a pattern of low abundance and high richness of lepidopteran species associated with byrsonima. there were 48 morphospecies and 46% of them occurred just once. there was a higher similarity between the fauna of b. crassa and b. verbascifolia than between these and b. coccolobifolia. once it is known that hairy leaves can affect herbivore colonization and foraging strategy, we suggest that differences in the lepidopteran community associated with byrsonima spp. are linked with different levels of pubescence on the leaf surface of each plant species. this tendency in byrsonima is supported by the small number of caterpillars found on young leaves of b. crassa and b. verbascifolia, which are quite hairy.

This tendency in Byrsonima is supported by the small number of caterpillars found on young leaves of B. crassa and B. verbascifolia, which are quite hairy.
Analysis of tool wear, surface roughness and cutting power in the turning process of compact graphite irons with different titanium content
Rosa, Sílvia do Nascimento;Diniz, Anselmo Eduardo;Andrade, Cássio Luiz F.;Guesser, Wilson Luiz;
Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-58782010000300006
Abstract: due to its good mechanical properties, the compacted (vermicular) graphite cast iron (cgi) has found a lot of applications in the automobilistic field. one of the applications is the production of high power diesel engine blocks that, due to the higher strength compared to the usual gray cast iron, allows the increase of the pressure inside the cylinder and, consequently, production of high level of energy. the result is the better fuel burning what decreases the fuel consumption and the pollutants' emission levels. however, when cgi replaces gray cast iron, the machining processes used to produce the components are more difficult, with lower tool lives and higher power consumption. moreover, because usually the raw material to produce cast products of cgi is selected from scrap, some residual level of titanium is present. thus, the goal of this work is to study the influence of the titanium content (in residual levels) in the turning operation performance with carbide tools, using two cutting speeds. the results show that the alloys with the highest titanium content generated the shortest tool life, but the titanium content influenced neither power consumption nor workpiece surface roughness. attrition/adhesion was the main tool wear mechanisms verified in this work.
Performance of carbide and ceramic tools in the milling of compact graphite iron - CGI
Gabaldo, Sander;Diniz, Anselmo Eduardo;Andrade, Cássio Luiz F.;Guesser, Wilson Luiz;
Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-58782010000500011
Abstract: grey cast iron (gci) is the most common material used in diesel engine blocks. however, to increase the pressures in the combustion chamber when this kind of alloy is used, it is necessary to increase the block wall thickness, what raises its weight and, consequently, does not fulfill the requirements. thus, the compacted graphite iron (cgi) appears as an alternative for such application. it has characteristics of heat conductivity and damping similar to the gci, but with superior mechanical properties, making possible the manufacturing of lighter engines with better performance. however, the use of cgi presents as disadvantage its worse machinability, when compared with gci, stimulating development of machining techniques and cutting tool materials. the goal of this work is to analyze the performance of two tool materials (carbide and ceramic si3n4) in the finishing milling of the fire face of the engine block made of cgi. to reach this goal these two materials were compared in terms of wear mechanisms and tool life in different cutting speeds. the main conclusion was that, for conditions similar to those used in this work, carbide is better than ceramic in terms of tool life in the milling cgi.

Abstract: Corneal sequestrum is an affliction of cats, which is not well defined. The lesion is characterized by degeneration of collagen, followed by accumulation in the cornea of a darkened pigment of variable intensity. Various treatments are adopted taking into account the depth and stage of the lesion, where lamellar keratectomy is the option most often taken. In the present work, four cases are described of Persian breed cats afflicted with corneal sequestrum, that were submitted to lamellar keratectomy followed by third eyelid flap or conjunctival pedicle flap, and afterward treated topically with the aqueous extract of Triticum vulgare (Bandvet ), without adverse effects. The results obtained showed that Bandvet , despite that it is a pharmaceutical not for ophthalmic use, can be employed in cats after superficial keratectomy.
