Construction of the image of politics in Spanish TV news programmes. The endo- and exo- balances of the quality of political information

Revista Latina de Comunicación Social , 2013,
Abstract: In our society the image that citizens have of politics is strongly conditioned by the way politics are represented in the media and, in particular, in TV news programmes. This article, a product of an R&D project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Social Policy and Sport, analyses the presence and image of political news in eight Spanish TV channels. This article also proposes a new method to measure the quality of political information in Spanish TV news programmes through the definition of the endo- and exo- balances of the political content of news programmes. The main conclusions of this study are that the news programmes of Televisión Espa ola and Cuatro offer a more balanced image of politics, while the news programmes from Sexta and Canal 9 offer more unbalanced image. The percentage of news devoted to politics does not depend on the channels’ ownership (public or private) or broadcast coverage (national or regional). On the other hand, there is a relation between the percentages of political issues and policy issues news presented on television.

Rediscovery of Haematobosca zuluensis (Zumpt), (Diptera, Stomoxyinae): Re-description and amended keys for the genus
Braack Leo,Pont Adrian C
Parasites & Vectors , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/1756-3305-5-267
Abstract: Background Prior to this publication, the biting fly Haematobosca zuluensis (Zumpt, 1950) (Diptera, Muscidae, Stomoxyinae) was known only from a single male specimen collected in 1923 in Zululand, South Africa. Seven additional males were subsequently captured in the Kruger National Park of South Africa, one in 1984 and six in 1991, but remained unidentified until now. The genus includes species of considerable veterinary significance, but current keys for identification of species are misleading due to inadequate description of H. zuluensis. Methods External morphological features are described to enable species characterization, including intraspecific variability. Results This paper confirms the existence of H. zuluensis, expands its known range, provides a full description of males of the species, and gives an up to date set of keys for the 15 known species within the genus. Available records suggest that Haematobosca zuluensis is a low density species as yet known only from wildlife areas of South Africa. Conclusions The additional specimens of H. zuluensis have enabled an improved description of the species and an improved set of keys to identify constituent members of the genus.
Large outbreaks of Ips acuminatus in Scots pine stands of the Italian Alps
Faccoli M,Colombari F,Dal Pont C,Finozzi V
Forest@ , 2010, DOI: 10.3832/efor0644-007
Abstract: In the last years, many Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) stands have been severely attacked by the bark beetle Ips acuminatus (Coleoptera Curculionidae Scolytinae). In the outbreak area of San Vito di Cadore (Eastern Dolomites), the number of attacked trees since 2005 and both the emergence of bark beetles and natural enemies have been assessed. The investigated forests showed dozens of easily recognizable infestation spots with size ranging from about 20-30 trees (small spots) up to 300 trees (large spots). These infested spots evolved quickly, while new ones appeared within a radius of few hundreds of meters. During the last 5 years (2006-2010) we sampled branches from small and large spots and lodged them into emergence cages: adults of I. acuminatus as well as natural enemies were collected weekly, identified and counted. At the same time, a monitoring program of the surveyed pine stands was carried out to check the enlargement of old spots and the appearance of new ones. Voltinism and phenology of I. acuminatus were investigated by pheromone traps baited with different lures (Austrian vs. Spanish lures). The effects of a sanitation felling of about 4500 infested trees, carried out by the Regional Forest Service in autumn 2007 on I. acuminatus population were also assessed. Throughout the whole sampling area I. acuminatus resulted bivoltine, with the highest density attained during the first generation. However, a part of the population still evidenced a monovoltine behaviour. The realized sanitation felling strongly reduced both breeding sites and the number of infested trees observed during the following year. Moreover the pheromone-baited traps gave useful information about changes in bark beetle population density; the trapping efficiency of Spanish lure resulted clearly higher than the Austrian one. Finally, the recorded parasitism may have a role in outbreak dynamics as it was significantly higher during the second host generation, in both small and large spots.
Accuracy of stellar parameters of exoplanet-host stars determined from asteroseismology

Abstract: In the context of the space-based mission CoRoT, devoted to asteroseismology and search for planet transits, we analyse the accuracy of fundamental stellar parameters (mass, radius, luminosity) that can be obtained from asteroseismological data.} Our work is motivated by the large uncertainties on planetary radius determination of transiting planets which are mainly due to uncertainties on the stellar parameters. Our goal is to analyse uncertainties of fundamental stellar parameters for a given accuracy of oscillation frequency determination. We generate grids of equilibrium models of stars and compute their pulsation spectra based on a linear nonadiabatic stability analysis. Using differents methods of comparison of oscillation mode spectra, we derive uncertainties on fundamental stellar parameters and analyse the effect of varying the number of considered modes.} The limits obtained depend strongly on the adapted method to compare spectra. We find a degeneracy in the stellar parameter solutions, up to a few % in mass (from less than 1% to more than 7% depending on the method used and the number of considered modes), luminosity (from 2% to more than 10%) or radius (from less than 1% to 3%), for a given pulsation spectrum.

Abstract: there are many indicators to measure different aspects of the primary health care activities. however, the interpretation of most of them it is difficult because the majority give partial information. this work proposes a standardised model to calculation of a synthetic indicator to measure the product of primary care teams. we made this work based on the sequential realization of a bibliographical review, a retrospective study to know registered morbidity, and the consent of a working group. for the design of the synthetic indicator we carried out a sequential working methodology in six phases: 1) identification and selection of components for the indicator; 2) determination of theoretical prevalences and coverages; 3) ponderation of the components; 4) establishment of standards; 5) formulation of the components; 6) application of the scale and calculation of the indicator. ten health problems were selected; that supposed a standardised scale of 17 items (eqa-17). the 10 problems of health which composed this synthetic indicator contemplate the realization of activities of promotion of the health (smoking cessation), activities of primary prevention (tetanus and influenza vaccination), care of acute problems (prescription of antibiotics), and care of chronic diseases (diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, patients with high-risk cardiovascular index, atrial fibrillation, and heart faillure). the concept of a synthetic indicator to measure the level of quality of the product generated by the primary care teams could be useful for the improvement of the current evaluation models in primary care services.

Abstract: sweet's syndrome or acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis (ss) is characterized by the sudden onset of painful erythematous lesions (papules, nodules, and plaques) together with fever and neutrophilia. the lesions are typically located on hands, arms, upper trunk, neck and face, showing an asymmetric distribution. acute phase reactants are usually elevated and dermal infiltration of neutrophils without vasculitis is seen on skin biopsies. it is considered as a marker of systemic disease in over half of the cases, and is associated with infections, inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmune connective tissue disorders and various neoplasias. its association with crohn's disease (cd) is unusual and it appears mainly in association with colonic involvement. fewer than 50 cases have been published in the medical literature since its first description in 1964, some concurrent with the first episode of cd. we present two patients with crohn's disease and sweet's syndrome diagnosed in our department at the time of cd diagnosis, as well as their response to treatment, subsequent course of the disease, and a review of the scientific literature.
