Abstract: the economic values of dairy cattle were derived from economics and production data of a demonstration farm, the "pasture dairy production system using holstein zebu cattle" at embrapa-dairy cattle. the economic values were estimated by two methods 1) from the partial derivative of profit with respect to each trait, and 2) from the partial derivative of the income/cost ratio, both evaluated at the mean value of all other traits. with the latter method, the economic values of traits considered, expressed in equivalent kg of milk, were: carrier (milk with zero fat and protein), 0.77 /kg, milk fat, - 5.00 /kg, milk protein, -3.65 /kg, mastitis, -155,34 /case, milk flow, 146.00 /kg/min, number of services per conception, -104.50 /service, age at 330 kg, -1.27 /day, days from 330 kg to first calving, -0.51 /day, herdlife, 49.63 /year and dry cow weight, -4.34 /kg. similar values were obtained with method 1. these results confirm previous literature reports indicating negative economic values for milk fat and protein when these components are not paid for, higher economic value of reducing cow liveweight relative to increasing milk yield and showing great importance for mastitis, milk flow and herdlife and low relative importance of interval from 330 kg to first calving.

Abstract: the objective of this trial was to study the effects of recombinant bovine somatotropin on milk yield and composition, blood metabolites and hormonal profile in lactating goats. twenty-four toggenburg goats were assigned to one of two treatments as follows: t1 (n=12) received injection of 250 mg of r-bst, every 14 days (four injections), and t2 (n=12) received injections of saline solution (control). no significant differences on milk yield and composition (fat, protein, and dry extract) were observed comparing r-bst-treated goats with non-treated animals. however, milk lactose content was higher (p<0.05) on goats that received r-bst (4.47 ± 0.2) than on those treated with saline solution (4.34 ± 0.2 %) while somatic cells count was lower on t1 (681.1 ± 689.9) than on t2 [(1,001.84 ± 610.9 (x103 cells/ml)]. injection r-bst increased the concentration of non-esterified fatty acid compared to the saline-treated animals (309.67 ± 169.62 vs. 247.34 ± 126.38 meq/l) but the opposite was observed for urea concentration (86.84 ± 33.81 vs. 121.16 ± 42.57 mg/dl). the r-bst treatment reduced the total cholesterol and hdl levels (82.46 ± 19.25 vs. 89.29 ± 23.66 and 155.95 ± 19.67 x 177.67 ± 32.79 mg/dl for t1 and t2, respectively) in lactating goats. concentrations of albumin, glucose, total proteins, b-hidroxybutirate and thyroxin as well as body weight and body condition score all remained unchanged comparing both treatments. it can be concluded that r-bst increased milk lactose content, reduced somatic cells count, and changed the profile of blood metabolites of toggenburg goats.

Abstract: monthly weights (18.089) of 412 females on a demonstration farm in the zona da mata, minas gerais state, were used to develop a model to describe the liveweight of cows, heifers and calves. the data were analyzed using proc mixed of the sas package, separately for the following categories: a) cows, b) heifers older than 12 mo., c) heifers 70-d to 12 mo-old and d) female calves up to 70 d. for each of these, the regression equations of weight on age (mo) were, respectively, y i = 267.730 24.319 q + 81.025 z + 1.152 x 0.007 x2 + 3.908 qx + 0.958 zx 0.017 qx2; y i = -230.446 + 205.033 q + 76.206 z + 27.304 x 0.278 x2 11.806 qx + 0.166 qx2; y i = -58.167 + 99.107 q + 47.627 z + 16.730 x + 0.093 x2 4.928 qx and y i = 17.286 + 20.343 q + 11.023 z + 0.680 x + 4.117 x2 + 3.663 qx, where q is the proportion of holstein genes and z the breed heterozygocity. the average weight maintained by cows during their herd life was estimated by integration of the predicted weight (v) between the ages at first calving and at disposal. heterosis had important effect on this weight.

Abstract: data related with semen characteristics such as volume (vol), gross motility (turb), motility (mot), vigor (vig), concentration (conc), major defects (dma) and minor defects (dme) from 807 semen output (cs) of 105 sires of the gyr breed selected for milk production, and their measurements of scrotal circumference (ce) were used to study factors that affect these traits and the correlations among them. uni and bivariate animal models that included the fixed effects of ai company, year and season of cs or ce measurement, age at cs or ce measurement, and random animal (bull) effect were used to evaluate the effects of these source of variation and the correlation between those traits. ai company and sire had a significant effect on all traits. age affected only ce, turb and nemov (= vol x conc x mot). repetabilities estimated by univariate model ranged from 0.23 for conc to 0.70 for turb. in general, phenotypic correlations, estimated by bivariate model were in a favorable direction. pearson correlation between ce and all other traits ranged from -0.19 to 0.35. the recorded correlations, in general in a favorable direction, suggested that ce could be used as an elimination trait of sire to be pre-selected as a semen donor.

Abstract: context and objective: morbidly obese individuals are major consumers of healthcare services, with high associated costs. bariatric surgery is an alternative for improving these individuals' comorbidities. there are no studies comparing costs before and after bariatric surgery in brazil. the aim here was to analyze results relating to healthcare usage and direct costs among morbidly obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery. design and setting: historical cohort study on patients receiving healthcare through a private health plan in belo horizonte, minas gerais. methods: all healthcare services and their associated costs were included in the analysis: hospitalization, hospital stay, elective outpatient consultations, emergency service usage and examinations. the analyses were treated as total when including the whole years before and after surgery, or partial when excluding the three-month periods adjacent to the operation. results: for 382 obese patients who underwent open bariatric operations, there were 53 hospitalizations one year before and 95 one year after surgery (p = 0.013). gastrointestinal complications were the main indications for post-procedure hospitalizations. the partial average cost almost doubled after the operation (us$ 391.96 versus us$ 678.31). in subgroup analysis, the costs from patients with gastrointestinal complications were almost four times greater after bariatric surgery. even in the subgroup without complications, the partial average cost remained significantly higher. conclusion: although bariatric surgery is the only path towards sustained weight loss for morbidly obese patients, the direct costs over the first year after the procedure are greater. further studies, with longer follow-up, might elucidate whether long-term reversal of this trend would occur
