Letícia Nascimento Medeiros Bortolon, Luciana de Paula Le?o Triz, Bruna de Souza Faustino, Larissa Bianca Cunha de, Denise Rosso Tenório Wanderley Rocha, Alberto Krayyem Arbex
Open Journal of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases (OJEMD) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ojemd.2016.61003
Abstract: Gestational mellitus diabetes (GDM) is a highly prevalent metabolic disorder among pregnant women nowadays. It is defined as any level of glucose intolerance, appearing or first being recognized during pregnancy. It is essential to diagnose and treat GDM early, in order to reduce or avoid complications for mother and fetus. Recently, new guidelines have changed the diagnosis criteria, and it is expected that the prevalence of GDM will increase by approximately 18%. A relevant goal of these new definitions is to provide a better care for pregnant women, in an attempt to reduce fetal and maternal complications. These new criteria will also increase the impact on costs of the health care system. Treatment must be individualized for best results, including a specific diet, physical activity and the use of medications. Metformin and Insulin use are analyzed in detail, in face of new evidences regarding their safety and efficacy during pregnancy.

Abstract: The sodium and glucose co-transporter inhibitors type 2 (SGLT2) comprises a new class of hypoglycemic drugs to control type 2 diabetes mellitus, in an attempt to add new non-existing benefits to the so far arising classes. Regarding this new class of drugs, represented by dapaglifozin, canaglifozin andempaglifozin, it is important to highlight the benefits brought by these medications to combat hyperglycemia with insulin-independent mechanisms that are beyond glucose reduction, such as cardiovascular events prevention, reduction in HbA1c, weight loss and blood pressure lowering. Recently, a relevant study (Empa-Reg) brought hope and set thespotlight on the prevention of cardiac events among diabetic patients, which is the main cause of mortality within this group. However, despite coming out as a good treatment option, SGLT2 inhibitors are under constant clinical research and, as a new drug, it should be carefully carried out regarding the long-term effects of glycosuria and other possible side effects, such as the observed increase in the incidence of bladder, breast cancer and bone fractures, which require further studies. Therefore, these compounds might represent a landmark approach for the treatment of diabetes.

Open Journal of Immunology (OJI) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/oji.2012.23015
Abstract: Introduction: Cutaneous tuberculosis (CTB) is a rare form of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis that, when associated with late diagnosis, worsen the quality of life of the sick individuals. This report presents a case of late diagnosis of CTB. Unusual clinical manifestations retarded the correct tuberculosis diagnosis for more than a year. The immune response elicited by this type of tuberculosis as well as the factors that might contribute to the delay in diagnosis was evaluated and discussed. Methodology: Clinical evaluation and flow cytometric analyses of PBMC were realized for a case of CTB and a healthy individual as a control. Results: M. tuberculosis specific TCD8+ cell response was analyzed by flow cytometry and revealed positive cells for IL-17, IL-10, TGF-β and IDO. The CTB patient presented higher percentage of those cells when compared to a healthy donor. However, TCD8 cells positive for the important protective cytokine, IFN-γ was decreased in the CTB patient. Conclusion. The assessment of the M. tuberculosis specific TCD8+ immune response showed a regulatory/modulatory phenotype with a reduced IFN-γ response when compared to the healthy control that could have contributed to the CTB infection.
Estrutura e dinamica da comunidade fitoplanct nica e sua rela o com as variáveis ambientais na lagoa M e-Bá, Estado do Espírito Santo, Brasil = Structure and dynamics of the phytoplankton community and its relationship with environmental variables at the M e-Bá lagoon, Espírito Santo State, Brazil

Acta Scientiarum : Biological Sciences , 2009,
The present study aimed to evaluate the structure and dynamics of the phytoplankton community and its relationship with environmental variables at the M e-Bá lagoon. Four samples were taken fortnightly during the rainy and dry seasons, in the limnetic zone of twosampling sites, subjected to different environmental conditions. Richness, total density, abundance, dominance, diversity and equitability of phytoplankton were analyzed. The environmental variables studied were: temperature (air/water), transparency, euphotic zone, depth, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, salinity, concentration of nitrate, nitrite, ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, orthophosphate, and total phosphorus. A total of 138 taxa were found and the Class Cyanophyceae was the most representative both qualitatively and quantitatively. The total phytoplankton density was high, showing the highest values in the dry season and in the point 1, considered more impacted. The lack of dominance and abundance of few species explained the values of diversity and equitability. The

Revista Ciência da Madeira , 2011,
Abstract: The paper aimed at evaluating the interrelationship between three nondestructive methods to predict the stiffness of a tropical hardwood (Sextonia rubra). Lumber material from Sextonia rubra was collected, ripped and planned and boards were then nondestructively tested using three methods: stress wave, transverse vibration and static bending. Stress wave (Edsw) and transverse vibration (Edtv) testing were done using commercial equipment while the static bending testing (Esb) was conducted according to the ASTM D4761. According to the results, linear regression models could be fitted to explain the interrelationship between the nondestructive properties. The best model was observed for the relationship between Esb and Edtv (R2=0.946), followed by Esb/Edsw (R2=0.834) and Edtv/Edsw (R2=0.817). The values of dynamic modulus of elasticity were frequently higher (Edsw=4.19 %; Edtv= 9.44 %) than the Esb values (15314 N/mm2). On the other hand, Edtv values were higher (5.35%) than Edsw values. It can be concluded that the three nondestructive testing methods studied are suitable to estimate the stiffness of this tropical hardwood. However, corrected models must be employed to improve the reliability of the predicted values.

Abstract: The sexual and reproductive health program, in Florianópolis/SC, promoted work-shops, mounted and performed by medical students, in public elementary schools. After that, it was possible to investigate the students’ opinion with a transverse quantitative study. 333 school children aged from 11 to 16 and enrolled between 5th and 9th grades answered the questionnaire. In the sample, 15.9% had initiated sexual activity, and 38.8% of them did not use condoms every time. The young people who have not started sexual activities talk about sexuality with their parents in greater proportion than those who have already started (significant difference). The students’ evaluation about the project was positive. It is expected to raise interest in new strategies for sex education permanently in public elementary schools, with the support of higher education institutions and strengthening the participation of parents and caretakers, in the process.

CERNE , 2010,
Abstract: This work aims to assess the bending properties of glued laminated timber beams (glulam) manufactured with species red louro (Sextonia rubra). Laminations were nondestructively tested using the transverse vibration method (EMlam). Then 10 glulam beams were manufactured and tested in static bending according to ASTM D 198 standard, having modulus of elasticity (EM), modulus of rupture (fM), and bending moment (M) determined. The finished beams were also tested by the transverse vibration method (EMvt). It was noted that the EMvt value was only 2% lower than the EM value. Using laminations with a high modulus of elasticity did allow effective gain in stiffness. Therefore, results indicate that the transverse vibration method is a valid, reliable technique both for testing glulam laminations and for assessing stiffness in finished beams. Bending properties in glulam beams were influenced by the stiffness of constituent laminations.
