Acta Scientiarum : Agronomy , 2010,
The goal of this work was to evaluate the effects of sulfur and simulated acid rain on the leaf of Phaseolus vulgaris. Acid rain (pH 3.0) and an aqueous solution (Ph 6.0) were performed on test and control plants, respectively. A decrease in chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll concentrations was observed in theflowering stage (R6). However, increased rates were determined in the maturation stage (R7), which can suggest a resistance and/or adjustment of the plants to the acid simulation conditions. The acid treatment achieved chlorophyll degradation by oxidative processes without conversion to pheophytin. A reduction was also seen in the number of glandular and non-glandular trichomes and stomata on the test plants. Moreover, only small injuries were verified on the blade and peciolar areas of the tested individuals of P. vulgaris, probablydue to the presence of the reported epidermal structures.

Journal of Minerals and Materials Characterization and Engineering (JMMCE) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jmmce.2015.34030
Abstract: Clay minerals are widespread in natural systems and have been widely used for the removal of pollutants. In this study, natural expanded vermiculite was used in adsorption tests to remove ammonium nitrogen from landfill leachate. The modification of vermiculite was carried out using NaOH and HCl, and for both modifications the best concentration was 0.1 mol/L. The results produced by XRD (X-ray diffraction) showed that Al replaced K after modification of the vermiculite using HCl and that Mg and Na replaced K after modification using NaOH. It was observed that the adsorption capacity increased as the percentage in mass of K diminished. The Langmuir is the isotherm that presents the best fit of the data, and the values of RL (the Langmuir coefficient) suggest that the adsorption is linear. The thermodynamic parameters indicate that the process is spontaneous and endothermic, that there is a high affinity between the adsorbate and the adsorbent, and that physical adsorption is prevalent.

Phylogenetic Systematics, a method to reconstruct evolutionary trees created by Willi Hennig in 1955 and expanded in 1966, is often considered a new paradigm that revolutionized biological classifications when compared to former schools of systematics such as evolutionary taxonomy. Such an approach to the history of systematics is mainly based on Kuhn's view of the progress of scientific knowledge. However, we can question the validity of the revolutionary status - in the Kuhnian view - attributed to Hennigian phylogenetics. Herein, we discuss the shared attributes of phylogenetic systematics and evolutionary taxonomy, both deeply rooted in Darwin-Wallace's evolutionary theory, and why Hennig's method is a development of Mayr's and Simpson's proposals for biological classification, explicit in the synthetic evolutionary theory of the years 1930 and 1940. In this sense, they adjust to the popperian vision of a "natural selection" of scientific hypothesis. Yet, phylogenetic systematics is a robust and objective scientific method, thus having characteristics that allow it to "survive" in the struggle for existence with other schools of systematics.

Abstract: diabetic retinopathy (dr), a dm microvascular complication, is the leading cause of blindness. angiogenic factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (vegf) are involved in the pathogenesis of dr. vegf-a is a potent, multifunctional cytokine that acts through the receptors vegfr-1 and vegfr-2 expressed in the vascular endothelium and causing increased vascular permeability and neovascularization stimulation in both physiological and pathological processes. the expression of vegfr-1 is upregulated by hypoxia and is less responsive to vegf compared to vegfr-2 which is the main mediator mitogenic, angiogenic, and increased vascular permeability. vegf polymorphisms have been studied in dr susceptibility and progression. significant association between the polymorphism 634c / g and the presence of rd is reported mainly in relation to allele c. the homozygous cc is associated to proliferative rd and to increased vitreous and serum levels of vegf suggesting that the presence of the c allele is an independent risk factor for rd. the knowledgement of vegf lead to the development of anti-vegf drugs (pegaptanib, ranibizumab and bevacizumab) aiming to prevent pathological neovascularization. the anti-vegf therapy is a reality in practice medical treatment of dr.

Abstract:

Microvesicles (MVs) or shedding membrane vesicles have recently been described as a novel model of intercellular communication. Previously, MVs were considered as unnecessary or secreted cellular debris, but MVs have lately been described as having roles in a variety of biological functions, such as cell homeostasis and the cellular processes involved in the oncogenesis of many types of tumors. Carrying several key molecules that contribute to tumor development and progression, similar to mRNAs, microRNAs and other non-coding RNAs, DNA and even small proteins, MVs can be considered as a ubiquitous form of novel cell communication that is present in most somatic cells. Although tumor-derived MVs have been demonstrated in different types of cancers, the literature data on MVs in primary central nervous system (CNS) tumors are relatively scarce. In this review, we address the involvement of MVs in diffuse astrocytomas, particularly glioblastomas, as well as oligodendrogliomas and medulloblastomas. We placed particular focus on the cellular crosstalk between tumor and “normal” cells, the putative mechanisms how the tumor microenvironment is modulated and the spread of aggressive phenotypes. Additionally, a better understanding of the participation of tumor-derived MVs in the regulation of key cancer pathways will offer new insights into tumor pathogenesis and the mechanisms of multidrug resistance, and may help to develop new strategies for novel therapies against these infiltrative CNS tumors.

Abstract: The concern of the ethics and the meaning of life in young adults became universal and are present in all contexts of human life. Such universality is due to the development of modern rationality, to establish a relationship between the intrinsic theoretical dimensions (scientific) and practical dimensions (ethical), originated that are present in the own array of knowledge. This descriptive cross-sectional study, aims to identify the values of the ethical dimension and meaning of life defended by the college students of the Universities of Madeira, Portugal and Fortaleza, Brazil. The sample consists of 605 University students (Madeira = 225 and Fortaleza = 380), with an average age of 21 years and a standard deviation of 2. We used the questionnaire on values (adapted from the European Values Survey). Most of the young people referred to have a religion (60% wood and 78.4% stronghold), being the most Catholic, however, present in your frequency disinterest and, yet, in Brazil there is a greater diversity of religions. Supporting the intervention of religious institutions in situations of everyday life is accepted mostly by Brazilians, with the exception of politics (35.5%). On the other hand, the university students of the University of Madeira understand that Religious Institutions should only give their opinion on racial discrimination (76.6%). Believe in God (90.8% and 55.1% Stronghold) and Soul (80.3% and 66.4% Stronghold) are beliefs more referred to by college students. These results are intended to contribute in the field of research on ethical values and meaning of life in young people. This study contributes to future comparative research among university students and to developing strategic programs in education and health, increasing the success and excellence in the formation of a full citizenship, preventing the fanaticisms and the social discrimination that today devastate the collective globally.
