ARS (S?o Paulo) , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/s1678-53202011000200011
Departing from some aspects suggested by Slow Angle Walk (Beckett Walk), 1968, one of Bruce Nauman's first videos shot in his atelier, this essay aims at examining some formal and thematic convergences between Nauman's procedures in a motley universe of works and in Samuel Beckett's pieces, particularly the use of repetition, suppression and restraint as fundamental mechanisms to promote some sort of saturation of experience, leading to depletion, by means of an exhaustive recombination of a few elements.
Per una narratologia postumanista. Bruce Clarke, Posthuman Metamorphosis: Narrative and Systems Per una narratologia postumanista. Bruce Clarke, Posthuman Metamorphosis: Narrative and Systems

Abstract: In this study we reconstruct the story of a little-known tale by Leo Tolstoy, What Men Live By? (1881). Tolstoy’s aim with this work was to illustrate certain key aspects of the new ethical-religious vision he had developed during the 1870s. On completing What Men Live By, the author took an active part in distributing it among both the urban and rural working classes; his efforts were successful and it was effectively read by millions of working-class people. On the one hand, our article looks at the narrative and editorial strategies Tolstoy adopted to win over new readers; on the other hand, it analyzes the tactics adopted by his working-class readers to appropriate, adapt and transform Tolstoy’s text for themselves. Abstract: at the beginning the investigation on infectious diseases was plenty of adventures in exotic countries. the efforts of the english investigators, headed by patrick manson, gave birth to the "tropical" medicine and "tropical" diseases, like the sleeping sickness, which was sweeping the country north to the victoria lake in 1901. the royal society of london sent two commissions in search of the etiological agent. aldo castellani was decisive for the failure of the first - low, castellani, christy,1902 - because even he saw trypanosoma in samples of some patients, he did not appreciate his discovery; and decisive also for the success of the second -bruce, nabarro, greig, 1903 - when he and bruce recognized this trypanosoma as the etiological agent. following these expeditions, low developed a brilliant career in england, christy a life of investigation mixed up with adventures through asia and africa and castellani a long life of lights and shadows in many lands.
My City of Ruins: Bruce Springsteen e l’utopia fra le rovine
Enrico Botta
Altre Modernità , 2011,
Abstract: The paper focuses on My City of Ruins, the song that Bruce Springsteen sang—ten days after the 09/11 terrorist attacks—for "America: A Tribute to Heroes" and that was released in the concept album The Rising in 2002. The essay aims to highlight how the song describes the post 09/11 New York City by opposing the themes of “ruins” and “utopia.” From a textual and musical point of view, My City of Ruins is, in fact, composed of a double structure that balances different feelings: the fear, pain, and loneliness of the victims, in the rock-blues first section; the faith, love, and hope, in the gospel second part. Furthermore, the paper tries to point out how My City of Ruins no longer describes the symbolic ruins of a foreign past—in line with the nineteenth and twentieth-century American cultural tradition of the Grand Tour—but defines the physical signs of a definitively collapsed “American dream,” which can survive only in a utopian and spiritual “Promised Land.”
BOOK REVIEW | Soundings: The Story of the Remarkable Woman Who Mapped the Ocean Floor
William B.F. Ryan
Oceanography , 2012,
Abstract: Indeed, the life of a remarkable woman comes alive in Soundings by Hali Felt, published this past summer by Henry Holt & Company. I had the opportunity to befriend, work with, admire, cajole, mourn with, and visit with Marie Tharp from 1962 until her death in 2006. Her co-conspirator in mapping the ocean floor was Bruce Heezen, the mentor of my PhD dissertation at the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory of Columbia University. In fact, when I arrived at Lamont, my office was so close to the module in which she sketched those extraordinary physiographic diagrams that I could hear her pen scratch across the drafting sheet as well as the common "oh dear" she would utter just seconds before the interminable rubbings of her eraser. Hundreds and hundreds of rubbings, followed by curses from Bruce, and the arguments back and forth would become an indelible part of my own education about how our planet works.
Aldo Castellani y las expediciones de la Royal Society al país del sue o negro Aldo Castellani and the expeditions of the Royal Society to the black sleep's country
Walter Ledermann D
At the beginning the investigation on infectious diseases was plenty of adventures in exotic countries. Effects of Trypanosoma brucei tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetases silencing by RNA interference

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762007005000090
Abstract: the kinetoplast genetic code deviates from the universal code in that 90% of mitochondrial tryptophans are specified by uga instead of ugg codons. a single nucleus-encoded trnatrp(cca) is used by both nuclear and mitochondria genes, since all kinetoplast trnas are imported into the mitochondria from the cytoplasm. to allow decoding of the mitochondrial uga codons as tryptophan, the trnatrp(cca) anticodon is changed to uca by an editing event. two tryptophanyl trna synthetases (trprss) have been identified in trypanosoma brucei: tbtrprs1 and tbtrprs2 which localize to the cytoplasm and mitochondria respectively. we used inducible rna interference (rnai) to assess the role of tbtrprss. our data validates previous observations of trprs as potential drug design targets and investigates the rnai effect on the mitochondria of the parasite.
Effects of taurine supplementation on response of the cardiac injury biomarkers to Bruce diagnostic protocol in patients with heart failure

Koomesh , 2011,
Abstract: Introduction: Taurine has an important role in regulating the cardiac electric activity and anti-arrhythmias effects and it may improve heart failure. This study was designed to investigate the effect of taurine supplementation on response of the cardiac injury biomarkers to Bruce diagnostic protocol and exhaustive time in patients with heart failure. Materials and Methods: Sixteen patients between 50 to 65 years with heart failure, who were classified in II and III classes, were randomly divided into the taurine and placebo groups. The taurine received 1.5g taurine supplement 3 times a day in 500 milligram capsules and the placebo group consume starch capsules for two weeks. Plasma taurine, cardiac troponin I and CPK-MB concentrations were measured before and after taurine supplementation and also in each stage before and after performing the Bruce protocol (totally, 4 stages). Plasma taurine, cardiac troponin I and CPK-MB concentrations were detected by using HPLC, ELISA and immunological methods, respectively. Results: Results showed that Bruce protocol led to significant increase in cardiac troponin I and CPK-MB concentrations and significant decrease in plasma taurine. Furthermore, taurine supplemen--------tation results in the resting level decrease of cardiac troponin I and CPK-MB. Also, taurine supplementation led to increase exhaustive time in comparison with placebo group and before supplementation stage, but it couldn't completely create preventive effect on cardiac troponin I and CPK-MB concentration after the Bruce protocol. Conclusion: Taurine supplementation in patients with heart failure who are taking standard medical treatment can increase their exercise capacity. Furthermore, our study supports this idea that the use of taurine supplementation can be recommended to people who suffer from cardiac events as a preventive strategy.

Hal Foster
ARS (S?o Paulo) , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/s1678-53202011000200003
Abstract: Neste artigo, Hal Foster nos narra o que ele chama da "vingan a do capitalismo contra o pós-modernismo" por intermédio do design. In this paper, Hal Foster gives us an account of what he calls the "revenge of capitalism on postmodernism" through design. Beginning with the renewed interest of the years 2000 in Art Nouveau, which resulted in exhibitions and studies, he compares this style with the total design of our days, of which Bruce Mau is his main example. From Fordism to consumerism, the shifts that led to the expansion of a kind of design and to the loss of subjectivity underlie Foster's claim for distinctions that "provide culture with running-room".
Lindbeck’s Scheme-Content Distinction: A Critique of the Dualism Between Orders of Language
Adonis Vidu
Journal for the Study of Religions and Ideologies , 2004,
Abstract: There are several tensions present in George Lindbeck’s postliberal theology. One of these is between realist intuitions and a non-epistemic account of truth, on the one hand, and a social-constructivist non-realism with regard to theological statements. Theology is relegated to the status of second-order discourse, while first order language comprises the practices, rituals, vocabulary of a religion. I am challenging this intermediary status of religion with the help of Donald Davidson’s critique of the dualism between scheme and content. Since there isn’t much to be made of the notion of epistemic intermediaries (either as ‘content’ or as ‘scheme’) it does not make sense to continue to speak either in terms of realism or of non-realism. This clears the way for treating theology as cognitive.
