Abstract: the youth is a vulnerable population to acquired immune deficiency syndrome, as they demand freedom for their emancipation and, as a consequence, risk behaviors. this study compares adolescents from different socio-cultural backgrounds (public - diurnal and nocturnal - and private schools) about their acquired immune deficiency syndrome communication context, knowledge, risk behavior concerning human immunodeficiency virus and attitudes towards the preservative. a survey was applied to a 1 386 high school student's sample. the environment of the students from the nocturnal period is more similar to the adult's; even though they show positive attitudes, they are not as positive as the diurnal students. they also showed more problems regarding the knowledge of acquired immune deficiency syndrome, which is related to their less positive attitudes towards the preservative and intention to use , lower frequency of use and more fear of acquiring the human immunodeficiency virus. this group's risky behavior associated to cognitive and environmental indicators show us its greater vulnerability regarding the human immunodeficiency virus.

Abstract: this study focuses on female sex workers and their respective partners. semi structured interviews were performed with 40 women with ages between 19 and 47. around half of the subjects had a fixed relationship. the software alceste analyzed the collected data. three salient aspects of the social representations of aids were detected and are here considered by order of importance: first, aids was seen as a disease which affects others, involving 48.3% of the uce; second, aids was seen as a disease that represents a menace to everybody and was seen as being caused by a neglectful use of condoms (26% of uce); third, aids was associated to the use of drugs and to people arousing suspicion. data also suggested that women who had fixed relationships out of commercial relations were more vulnerable than the others for they did not behave as protectively with their fixed partners as they did with their clients.

Abstract: this paper has the goal of understanding how social representations of hiv influence preventive measures against this virus in conjugal relations between heterosexual men and women. forty-eight people took part on this research, half men and half women, heterosexuals living as couples. age ranged from 19 to 74 years. for the analysis of collected material, a descending hierarchical classification of narratives (alceste) was used. results have showed through aids social representations that the interviewed subjects proceeded with caution when dealing with people from specific social groups, adopting the idea of "unsafe groups". besides, it was identified that they related aids to fear and sex with people who had not safe sexual behaviors. it was possible to discover, with this study, that the known partner is less dangerous than the unknown ones. there was a specific way of denial of the risk by the subjects, due to stable relationships they had.

Abstract: the aim of this research is to identify the cultural and social psychological aspects associates to the vulnerabilities of young black students and whites, in brazil and france, towards hiv/aids. a quantitative and comparative study between brazil and france was carried through, with 480 students of the average education of the two countries with the objective to compare its knowledge on aids, attitudes front the condom, and relation feelings, as well as other intervening psychological and social variable in its vulnerabilities to the hiv/aids. the results had evidenced a multiplicity of factors of risk to the dst and the hiv/aids between the studied young. e this multiplicity varies the group in accordance with of belongs of the participants, disclosing inequalities lived deeply for members of some groups, that you display the biggest vulnerability to them, as for example, the girls in relation to the boys, the black people in relation to the whites.

Abstract: this study aimed at answering if different printed informatives on hiv transmission (leaflets) can facilitate or make difficult the knowledge about the disease and the attitude towards condoms among high school students. three hundred secondary students from public and private schools from the cities of florianópolis, itajaí and balneário camboriú participated. three types of leaflets were used (a - adolescence and aids; b - adolescent, drugs and aids; c - adolescence, sexuality and aids), and three questionnaires (before, after reading the leaflets and 10 days later). the test of differences between means (student's t) and analysis of variance (manova) were employed for data analysis, through the software spss 11.1. the data indicated the existence of positive impacts of the reading of leaflets on aids knowledge, but there were no significant changes concerning the attitude towards condoms. the use of informative leaflets as preventive strategies against aids can be evaluated as positive.

Abstract: this study aimed to assess the effect of the dissemination of scientific knowledge on hiv / aids in three aspects: knowledge about the disease, attitudes toward condom use and social representation of aids risk. the research was carried out with high school students and consisted of two studies: one on receipt of an informational video (active and passive reception) and one on a simulated case of a scientific controversy. the results showed that the video information, in the condition of active reception, is effective in increasing knowledge, but does not affect participants' attitudes regarding condom use. in the simulated case there was a significant increase in scientific knowledge and a favorable attitude was generated on the part of students. as for the social representations of aids risk, this research showed independent effects on the activation of elements of these representations. in the active reception condition participants associated aids risk with sex and prevention; in the passive reception, with sex and risk behaviors; and in the simulated case, with sex, treatment and prevention. aids risk is represented by teenagers as a result of engaging in unprotected sex, since sex appears as a central element in the representation.

Abstract: the increasement of people with body image disorders highlighted the issue both in science and in the media. this study's goal was to search the relation between social representations and body image among female university students from different courses. the participants were 278 students from the psychology, physical education and fashion courses. the applied questionnaire intended to investigate body's satisfaction and also social representations. the results suggest a general student's dissatisfaction with their body image, even though they perceive their body as normal. the representations of the body presented three contexts: (1) the importance of the body's look and expression in interpersonal relations; (2) beauty and health related to thinness and physical activity; (3) appearance indicating potentialities in both personal and professional fields. it was concluded that the students' social representations of the body seem to be incompatible with their body image.

Abstract: the study aimed to measure and to compare the impact on scientific knowledge of students visualizing different kinds of documentary videos about hiv/aids - one with a more scientific approach and another with a more popularized one. one hundred and forty one (141) high school students from the city of florianópolis participated in the study. they were divided in 3 groups: control group (without visualization), group 1 (scientific video) and group 2 (popularized video). before and after the showing the videos, the scientific knowledge test about hiv/aids was applied. the results showed an increment in the medium score of the mentioned test in group 1, no significant change in group 2 and a decrease in the control group. it was concluded that the scientific form of presentation resulted in an increase of knowledge concerning hiv/aids.

Abstract: the goals of this study were to diagnose the structure of adolescents' social representation about aids and to examine the relationship of that representation with students' scientific knowledge about aids. a total of 262 students from a public high school in florianópolis (brazil) took part in the study. a self-applied questionnaire, and a scientific knowledge test about hiv/aids were used. structural analyses employing the software evocation and similitude 2000 were carried on. data revealed that the representation of aids is composed by the central elements: disease, death, fear, suffering and prejudice, which were also found in previous studies; joined by two new elements: prevention and responsibility. more than half of the students (55%) was not considered scientifically well informed about hiv/aids. aids prevention power, characteristically pragmatic, can be verified in the mentality of students, insofar as they emphasize the representation's affective dimension, and less the biomedical and scientific knowledge about the disease.
