The Role of Naturalness in Lewis's Theory of Meaning

Abstract: Many writers have held that in his later work, David Lewis adopted a theory of predicate meaning such that the meaning of a predicate is the most natural property that is (mostly) consistent with the way the predicate is used. That orthodox interpretation is shared by both supporters and critics of Lewis's theory of meaning, but it has recently been strongly criticised by Wolfgang Schwarz. In this paper, I accept many of Schwarze's criticisms of the orthodox interpretation, and add some more. But I also argue that the orthodox interpretation has a grain of truth in it, and seeing that helps us appreciate the strength of Lewis's late theory of meaning.
Ideals and idempotents in the uniform ultrafilters

Abstract: If $S$ is a discrete semigroup, then $\beta S$ has a natural, left-topological semigroup structure extending $S$. Under some very mild conditions, $U(S)$, the set of uniform ultrafilters on $S$, is a two-sided ideal of $\beta S$, and therefore contains all of its minimal left ideals and minimal idempotents. We find some very general conditions under which $U(S)$ contains prime minimal left ideals and left-maximal idempotents. If $S$ is countable, then $U(S) = S^*$, and a special case of our main theorem is that if a countable discrete semigroup $S$ is a weakly cancellative and left-cancellative, then $S^*$ contains prime minimal left ideals and left-maximal idempotents. We will provide examples of weakly cancellative semigroups where these conclusions fail, thus showing that this result is sharp.
Identification of water-borne bacterial isolates for potential remediation of organophosphate contamination  [PDF]

Abstract:

Three water-borne bacterial isolates were collected from the Houston metropolitan area. Each isolate was capable of growing upon carbon limited media inoculated with the organophosphorus (OP) compound paraoxon. All isolates were able to efficiently metabolize paraoxon and, to a lesser degree, methyl parathion to p-nitrophenol. 16S rDNA genome sequencing with universal bacterial primers identified the isolates as species belonging to the genera Aeromonas, Steno- trophomonas, or Exiguobacterium. All screened isolates harbor organophosphorus degradation (opd) genes that are approximately 99% similar over approximately 660 base pairs sequenced to one first isolated from Sphingobium fuliginis ATCC 27551 (formerly Flavobacterium sp. ATCC 27551). Additionally, two isolates KKWT11, identified as a putative Senotro- phomonas maltophilia, and KKBO11, identified as a putative Exiguobacterium indicum, were found to possess genomic DNA that closely matched a metallo- beta-lactamase that has been reported to function as a methyl parathion degradation (mpd) gene suggesting that both of these strains are prime candidates for wastewater remediation of a broad range of OP compounds.

Abstract:

In this paper we will analyze some decisions a player has to make as Shepard, the main character from the popular video game Mass Effect. We will view those decisions through the lenses of two philosophical positions, utilitarianism and Nietzsche’s “will to power”, and connect those and other dilemmas to our own world today. We will also discuss ways how Mass Effect could be integrated into and be a useful aid for an introductory philosophy class.

Sentiment Analysis of Investor Opinions on Twitter  [PDF]

Abstract: The rapid growth of social networks has produced an unprecedented amount of user-generated data, which provides an excellent opportunity for text mining. Sentiment analysis, an important part of text mining, attempts to learn about the authors’ opinion on a text through its content and structure. Such information is particularly valuable for determining the overall opinion of a large number of people. Examples of the usefulness of this are predicting box office sales or stock prices. One of the most accessible sources of user-generated data is Twitter, which makes the majority of its user data freely available through its data access API. In this study we seek to predict a sentiment value for stock related tweets on Twitter, and demonstrate a correlation between this sentiment and the movement of a company’s stock price in a real time streaming environment. Both n-gram and “word2vec” textual representation techniques are used alongside a random forest classification algorithm to predict the sentiment of tweets. These values are then evaluated for correlation between stock prices and Twitter sentiment for that each company. There are significant correlations between price and sentiment for several individual companies. Some companies such as Microsoft and Walmart show strong positive correlation, while others such as Goldman Sachs and Cisco Systems show strong negative correlation. This suggests that consumer facing companies are affected differently than other companies. Overall this appears to be a promising field for future research.
Differentiation of Material Temperature through the Application of Increased Localized Dissolution via Heat Transfer  [PDF]

Abstract: Increased temperature of a solution increases its solubility, allowing for a greater level of dissolution of the solute. A greater level of dissolution will result in a change in the density of the solution. When a localized area of the solution is of a different temperature, this will affect the localized density. Density is one of the factors affecting rate of sinking and the difference in temperature will lead to a change in the rate of sinking. Thus, when an object is at different temperatures, it will transfer heat to or from the solution in different manners and the rate of sinking will be different. This study tested whether sinking rate in a solution with excess solute could be used to judge the temperature of an object and the effect was confirmed with impure Graphite blocks in a Potassium Iodide solution.
The Effects of Centrality Ordering in Label Propagation for Community Detection  [PDF]

Abstract: In many cases randomness in community detection algorithms has been avoided due to issues with stability. Indeed replacing random ordering with centrality rankings has improved the performance of some techniques such as Label Propagation Algorithms. This study evaluates the effects of such orderings on the Speaker-listener Label Propagation Algorithm or SLPA, a modification of LPA which has already been stabilized through alternate means. This study demonstrates that in cases where stability has been achieved without eliminating randomness, the result of removing random ordering is over fitting and bias. The results of testing seven various measures of centrality in conjunction with SLPA across five social network graphs indicate that while certain measures outperform random orderings on certain graphs, random orderings have the highest overall accuracy. This is particularly true when strict orderings are used in each run. These results indicate that the more evenly distributed solution space which results from complete random ordering is more valuable than the more targeted search that results from centrality orderings.
Preliminary Monte Carlo Investigation of Using Ir-192 as the Source for Real Time Imaging Purpose  [PDF]

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential use of Ir-192 as the source for real time imaging during HDR (High Dose Rate) brachytherapy treatment. Phantom measurement was performed to determine outside of the body dose. Monte Carlo code, EGSnrcMP egs_inprz, was used for the simulation to calculate the outside of the body x-ray signal for CT reconstruction. Matlab code was developed to reconstruct the Ir-192 source and for 3D visualization in order to assess reconstructed CT resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, and imaging dose information. The measured dose was 0.67 ± 0.04 cGy, which was comparable to the Monte Carlo simulation result 0.71 ± 0.20 cGy. The reconstructed source diameter dimension was 1.3 mm compared with 1.1 mm for the real source dimension. The signal-to-noise ratio was 19.91 db following de-noising. Source position was within a 1 mm difference between programmed and simulated results. Although the Ir-192 signal is weak for CT imaging, it is possible to use it as a CT imaging x-ray source for HDR treatment localization, verification and dosimetry purposes. Further study is needed for the detailed design of an outside of the body CT-like device for use in brachytherapy imaging.
