Abstract: the sustainable development of an emergent country is dependent on a consistent scientific, technologic and innovative policy, on nature and biodiversity, on a rational exploration of natural resources to feeding, social advance and economical aim along with maintenance of health and diseases treatment. phytochemical investigations may be used to contribute with development throughout undergraduate and graduate career preparing professionals with qualification to these activities, as researcher and professor, including discovering and divulgation of new scientific knowlegments. the role of organic compounds produced by secondary metabolism of plants in the development of new drugs is presented (e. g.) throughout exposition using examples of features involved in this activity, since the recognition of a plant-derived popular medicine, until the laboratory semi-synthesis of its main constituents. several aspects related to the use of some vegetable species in treatment of many tropical diseases are pointed. economical and social importance of isolation, structural characterization, pharmacological investigation and chemical transformations of new natural organic substances isolated from the plants are related.

Abstract: Species from Moraceae family stand out in popular medicine and phytotherapy, have been for example used as expectorants, bronchodilators, anthelmintics and treatment of skin diseases, such as vitiligo, due to the presence of compounds with proven biological activity, as the coumarins. Coumarins are lactones with 1,2-benzopyrone basic structure, and are widely distributed in the plant kingdom, both in free form, and in glycosylated form. This work reports a literature review, describing the data of 13C NMR from 53 coumarins isolated from the family Moraceae, and data comparison between genera who presented photochemical studies, in order to contribute to the chemotaxonomy of this family.

Abstract: This study is a review of the Condamineeae tribe, through the acquisition of data from phytochemical studies and evaluation of genera activities that constitute the tribe, in order to contribute to chemotaxonomic classification of this tribe in the Rubiaceae family. This review also states the scarcity of phytochemical investigations of several genera and consequently a lot of species of family.
Secondary Metabolites of the Genus Trichilia: Contribution to the Chemistry of Meliaceae Family  [PDF]

Abstract: According to the literature data on the chemical composition of the Trichilia genus performed in this work, it can be concluded that 334 different compounds were isolated and identified, distributed in monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, diterpenes, triterpenes, steroids, limonoids, coumarins, flavonoids, lignans, phenolic acids, amino acids and lactones. Together with the structures of this compound, data from botanical classification and pharmaco-logical results from extracts and pure compounds on the Trichilia genus were also described. The compounds derived from terpenes pathway were more significant, corresponding to about 87.7% of isolated and identified compounds from various Trichilia species. Among the different terpenoid skeletons of this kind, limonoids were meanly reported, appearing a total of 33.9% of compounds isolated from several Trichilia species.

Abstract: from the aerial parts of ipomoea cairica (l.) sweet (convolvulaceae) the coumarins umbelliferone and scopoletin, and the dibenzyl-g-butyrolactone lignans arctigenin, matairesinol and trachelogenin, were isolated along with b-sitoterol and fatty acids. the analysis of the rmn 13c spectra of these and other lignoids described in the literature made it possible to revise some chemical shift assignments.

Abstract: from the hexane and ethyl acetate extracts obtained from stems, roots and leaf sheaths of vellozia graminifolia, a mixture of linear hydrocarbons, a mixture of pentacyclic triterpenes, five monoisoprenylated flavonoids and one labdane diterpene, (-)-ent-3b-hydroxy-8(17)-labden-15-oic acid, were isolated. the linear hydrocarbons and minor triterpenes were identified in their corresponding mixtures by high resolution gas chromatography (hrgc) and hrgc coupled to mass spectrometry. the major pentacyclic triterpenes and the diterpene were characterized by spectral data, including 2d nmr experiments, and chemical transformations.

Abstract: in an ethanolic extract of leaves of ottonia corcovadensis (piperaceae) were identified sixteen terpenoids of essential oil and the three flavonoids 3',4',5,5',7-pentamethoxyflavone (1), 3',4',5,7-tetramethoxyflavone (2) and 5-hydroxy-3',4',5',7-tetramethoxyflavone (3) and cafeic acid (4). two amides (5 and 6) were isolated from an ethanolic extract of the roots. the structures were established by spectral analysis, meanly nmr (1d and 2d) and mass spectra. extensive nmr analysis was also used to complete 1h and 13c chemical shift assignments of the flavonoids and amides. the components of the essential oil were identified by computer library search, retention indices and visual interpretation of mass spectra.
