An Experiment of K-Means Initialization Strategies on Handwritten Digits Dataset  [PDF]

Abstract: Clustering is an important unsupervised classification method which divides data into different groups based some similarity metrics. K-means becomes an increasing method for clustering and is widely used in different application. Centroid initialization strategy is the key step in K-means clustering. In general, K-means has three efficient initialization strategies to improve its performance i.e., Random, K-means++ and PCA-based K-means. In this paper, we design an experiment to evaluate these three strategies on UCI ML hand-written digits dataset. The experiment result shows that the three K-means initialization strategies find out almost identical cluster centroids, and they have almost the same results of clustering, but the PCA-based K-means strategy significantly improves running time, and is faster than the other two strategies.
Dissolution of Expanded Polystyrene in Cycloalkane Solutions  [PDF]

Abstract: Feasibility of dissolution and utilization of expanded polystyrene in cycloalkane solutions was investigated in this work. The dissolution process of expanded polystyrene in several cycloalkane solutions decalin, cyclohexane and methyl cyclohexane was studied. The effect of dissolution temperature, mechanical agitation, ultrasonic wave and stirring rate was studied under optimized conditions. Mass transfer coefficients were fitted. The results showed that the dissolution rate of expanded polystyrene in different cycloalkane solutions was ranked as decalin > methyl cyclohexane > cyclohexane; higher dissolution temperature and faster stirring rate could speed up the dissolution of expanded polystyrene; the effect of mechanical agitation was superior to ultrasonic condition; the solubility of top face was better than side face and under face.

Abstract: There are two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit of the title compound, C25H24F2N6, in which the N=N bonds adopt a trans configuration with distances in the range 1.262 (2)–1.269 (3) . The dihedral angles between heterocycles are 86.7 (2) and 85.6 (2)° in the two molecules while the dihedral angles between the heterocylic rings and the adjacent benzene rings are 13.4 (2) and 13.4 (2)° in one molecule and 5.3 (2) and 6.5 (2)° in the other. In the crystal, pairs of independent molecules are held together by four N—H...N hydrogen bonds, forming interlocked dimers.
Muonium-Antimuonium Oscillations in an extended Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with right-handed neutrinos

Abstract: The electron and muon number violating muonium-antimuonium oscillation process in an extended Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model is investigated. The Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model is modified by the inclusion of three right-handed neutrino superfields. While the model allows the neutrino mass terms to mix among the different generations, the sneutrino and slepton mass terms have only intra-generation lepton number violation but not inter-generation lepton number mixing. So doing, the muonium-antimuonium conversion can then be used to constrain those model parameters which avoid further constraint from the $\mu\to e\gamma$ decay bounds. For a wide range of parameter values, the contributions to the muonium-antimuonium oscillation time scale are at least two orders of magnitude below the sensivity of current experiments. However, if the ratio of the two Higgs field VEVs, $\tan\beta$, is very small, there is a limited possibility that the contributions are large enough for the present experimental limit to provide an inequality relating $\tan\beta$ with the light neutrino mass scale $m_\nu$ which is generated by see-saw mechanism. The resultant lower bound on $\tan\beta$ as a function of $m_\nu$ is more stringent than the analogous bounds arising from the muon and electron anomalous magnetic moments as computed using this model.
A mammalian fossil from the Dingqing Formation in the Lunpola Basin, northern Tibet, and its relevance to age and paleo-altimetry

Abstract: The distal extremity of a rhinocerotid humerus from the upper part of the Dingqing Formation at the Lunbori locality in Baingoin County, northern Tibet, is the first mammalian fossil found in Cenozoic deposits of the Lunpola Basin. The medial condyle of the distal trochlea of the humerus specimen from Lunbori gradually contracts from medially to laterally. The margin of the medial surface of the medial condyle is not prominent, the well-developed medial epicondyle strongly extends posteriorly, and is divided from the articular facet of the medial condyle by a groove; all of which are characteristic for the Rhinocerotidae. The medial condyle is wide at the bottom and narrow at the top. The medial collateral ligament fossa is relatively shallow, and the medial collateral ligament tubercle is very weak. The medial part of the upper margin of the medial condyle smoothly connects to the bony surface above, but there is no clear boundary between them. All of these characteristics are identical with those of Plesiaceratherium. These comparisons imply that the Lunbori specimen is closest to Plesiaceratherium gracile in the Shanwang Fauna from Linqu, Shandong Province, in size and morphology. Thus, its age is suggested to be the late Early Miocene (Shanwangian Age), about 18–16 Ma. Discovery of the rhinocerotid fossil suggests that the upper part of the Dingqing Formation deposited in the Neogene. While adjusting to paleo-temperatures of the Early Miocene, a paleo-ecosystem reconstruction indicates that the paleo-elevation was close to 3000 m in the Lunpola Basin during this time.
The Inhibitory Helix Controls the Intramolecular Conformational Switching of the C-Terminus of STIM1

Abstract: Store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) is a critical Ca2+ signaling pathway in many cell types. After sensing Ca2+ store depletion in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) lumen, STIM1 (STromal Interaction Molecule 1) oligomerizes and then interacts with and activates the Orai1 calcium channel. Our previous research has demonstrated that the inhibitory helix (IH) adjacent to the first coiled-coil region (CC1) of STIM1 may keep the whole C-terminus of STIM1 in an inactive state. However, the specific conformational change of CC1-IH that drives the transition of STIM1 from the resting state to the active state remains elusive. Herein, we report the structural analysis of CC1-IH, which revealed that the entire CC1-IH molecule forms a very long helix. Structural and biochemical analyses indicated that IH, and not the CC1 region, contributes to the oligomerization of STIM1. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) analysis suggested that the C-terminus of STIM1 including the IH region displays a collapsed conformation, whereas the construct without the IH region has an extended conformation. These two conformations may correspond to the conformational states of the C-terminus of STIM1 before and after activation. Taken together, our results provide direct biochemical evidence that the IH region controls the conformational switching of the C-terminus of STIM1.
Heterogeneous Knowledge Transfer in Video Emotion Recognition, Attribution and Summarization

Abstract: Emotional content is a key element in user-generated videos. However, it is difficult to understand emotions conveyed in such videos due to the complex and unstructured nature of user-generated content and the sparsity of video frames that express emotion. In this paper, for the first time, we study the problem of transferring knowledge from heterogeneous external sources, including image and textual data, to facilitate three related tasks in video emotion understanding: emotion recognition, emotion attribution and emotion-oriented summarization. Specifically, our framework (1) learns a video encoding from an auxiliary emotional image dataset in order to improve supervised video emotion recognition, and (2) transfers knowledge from an auxiliary textual corpus for zero-shot \pl{recognition} of emotion classes unseen during training. The proposed technique for knowledge transfer facilitates novel applications of emotion attribution and emotion-oriented summarization. A comprehensive set of experiments on multiple datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework.
Rapid Quantification of Bioactive Lentinan with an Aniline Blue Fluorescent Method  [PDF]

Abstract:
Lentinan is a clinically approved immune modulator and its anticancer and immunomodulatory bioactivity is found to be dependent on its triple helical conformation. Therefore, the development of rapid and convenient method for determination of bioactive lentinan with triple helical conformation holds great promise for the quality control of lentinan healthy products. In this work, an aniline blue fluorescent method was optimized and established to accurately and rapidly detect bioactive lentinan. In the presence of lentinan, the fluorescence intensity of aniline blue with 404 nm excitation and 492 nm emission dramatically enhanced within 15 min in pH 10 glycine-NaOH buffer solution, which allowed the analysis of lentinan in a very simple and fast manner. The method allowed for the sensitive determination of lentinan in the range of 1 to 60 μg/mL with a detection limit of 0.25 μg/mL. Notably, the protocol exhibited excellent selectivity for the determination of triple helical lentinan over other saccharides. The method was successfully applied to the detection of bioactive lentinan in health tonic solution, which demonstrated the method had great potential for quality control of lentinan contained products.
Research on Motion Attention Fusion Model-Based Video Target Detection and Extraction of Global Motion Scene  [PDF]

Abstract:

For target detection algorithm under global motion scene, this paper suggests a target detection algorithm based on motion attention fusion model. Firstly, the motion vector field is pre-processed by accumulation and median filter; Then, according to the temporal and spatial character of motion vector, the attention fusion model is defined, which is used to detect moving target; Lastly, the edge of video moving target is made exactly by morphologic operation and edge tracking algorithm. The experimental results of different global motion video sequences show the proposed algorithm has a better veracity and speedup than other algorithm.

PREPARATION OF MICROWAVE ABSORBING NICKEL-BASED ACTIVATED CARBON BY ELECTROLESS PLATING WITH PALLADIUM-FREE ACTIVATION

Abstract: Nickel-based activated carbon was prepared from coconut shell activated carbon by electroless plating with palladium-free activation. The materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), and vector network analyzer, respectively. The results show that the surface of the activated carbon was covered by a Ni-P coating, which was uniform, compact, and continuous and had an obvious metallic sheen. The content of P and Ni was 2.73% and 97.27% in the coating. Compared with the untreated activated carbon, the real permeability μ′ and imaginary permeability μ″ of Ni-based activated carbon became greater, whereas the real permittivity ε′ and imaginary permittivity ε″ became smaller. Also, the plated activated carbon was magnetic, making it suitable for some special applications. In general, the method reported here might be a feasible procedure to coat activated carbon with other magnetic metals, which may find application in various areas.
