Cultura política, ideologia e comportamento eleitoral: alguns apontamentos teóricos sobre o caso brasileiro
Borba, Julian;
Opini?o Pública , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-62762005000100006
Abstract: this article analyses the interrelations between the concepts of political culture, ideology and voting behavior, in an attempt to understand the so-called "brazilian voter". it defines the concepts of political culture and ideology, and presents the principal theories of electoral behavior and the typologies of the vote in brazil. it concludes by giving a typology of the brazilian voter, who is defined as personalist-oriented, deciding his vote principally on this basis of the individual attributes, competence and honesty of the candidates. finally, it seeks to explain the historical origin of this behavioral pattern among voters.
Borba, Rodrigo;
Physis: Revista de Saúde Coletiva , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-73312011000400012
Abstract: this paper proposes to approach applied linguistics to a little studied context in language studies in brazil: the prevention of std/aids. based on a non-essentialist view of the relationship between language and social identities, it discusses the importance of minding the use of language in this context and describes the interactional construction of identities in interventions for distribution of condoms among transvestite prostitutes in an urban region of southern brazil. data indicate that during the talks, sandra and marcia, female gender and sex, engage in interactions in which they use identity inter-texts associated with non-traditional identities and thus produce the effect of the adequacy of their identities to the transvestites and to the interactional context in which they operate. it argues that language, identity and inter-textuality are fundamental constructs to understand this interactional context and to address the spread of std/aids.
Borba, Rodrigo;
Revista Brasileira de Linguística Aplicada , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-63982009000200005
Abstract: this paper investigates the discursive and identity dynamics that emerge from speech events co-constructed by travestites who work as sex professionals and two female safer-sex outreach workers. guided by a socioconstructionist perspective on the relations between discourse and social identities (moita lopes, 2003), the study analyses the processes of (re)construction, (re)negotiation, and management of (perceived or constructed) differences among the interlocutors. more specifically, following bucholtz and hall (2003, 2004, 2005), i analyse the tactics of intersubjectivity produced by the interlocutors in the interactional process that put their differing identities in friction. the analysis indicates that identities are always fluid, multilayered, fragmented and changeable. this flexibility of social identities is highly visible in interactions that put differing identities in tension, bringing about the necessity of constant re-makings of subject positions to administrate the differences among interlocutors.
Borba, Rodrigo;
Trabalhos em Linguística Aplicada , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-18132010000100003
Abstract: guided by a non-representational/non-essencialist perspective on languagem-use and identity (moita lopes, 2003; 2006a), this article investigates the construction of gender and sexual identities in interactions drawn from safer-sex outreach work among travestis who prostitute themselves in an urban area in southern brazil. during the safer-sex outreach work, sandra and márcia, two women who have constructed themselves as members of hegemonic/tradicional identity categories (white, middle class, heterosexual, schooled), discursively produce non-traditional identities in a process of adequation (bucholtz and hall, 2004) of their subject positions to the travestis' and to the context of the interactions. based on wittgenstein's (2005) and bakhtin's (2003, 2004) theories, i argue that the discursive production of identities is only made possible because of the intertextual aspect of social identities (hall, 2005). sandra and márcia make use of intertexts that construct them as participants of the travestis' universe. the safer-sex outreach workers position themselves through their utterances in identity categories such as travesti, travesti's client, and prostitute and, thus, seem to discursively adjust their subject positions to their transgendered interlocutors. with this background, this paper dicusses the possibility of bringing applied linguistics closer to std/aids prevention practices.
In the face of the intense ongoing theoretical and methodological debate about political participation within Political Sociology, our purpose is to map the international literature that deal with proposals of classificatory typologies to be applied on the modalities of political participation. The outcomes of the debate are of paramount importance for the discipline to strengthen its analytical capability to grasp the transformations occurring in the universe of participation. The paper ends with a set of methodological proposals for the advancement of research studies in the field.
Discurso e (trans)identidades: intera o, intersubjetividade e acesso à preven o de DST/AIDS entre travestis Discourse and (trans)identities: interaction, intersubjectivity and access to STD/AIDS prevention among travestites
Rodrigo Borba
The strategic use of inserts in the Brazilian presidential elections
Felipe Borba
Revista Compolítica , 2012,
Abstract: The aim of this article is to analyze the communication strategies of presidential candidates during the elections held in 2006 and 2010. The focus is on the strategic component of electoral inserts and the methodology consists of investigating how candidates choose to distribute these inserts in the programming of television networks. The results indicate that the candidates pursue different strategies influenced basically by three variables: electoral legislation, their standing in polls and the difference of resources available. In parallel, the article debates the role of the regulation of electoral advertising and how this set of rules influences the level of information of campaigns, the occurrence of attacks, and party strategies. Overall, 2,993 electoral inserts were examined.
AS BASES SOCIAIS E ATITUDINAIS DA ALIENA O ELEITORAL NO BRASIL
Julian Borba
Revista Debates , 2008,
Abstract: One of the central premises of the theory of political culture is that feelings, beliefs and political values regarding citizenship become materialized into behavioral patterns. Starting from these more general pressupositions of political theory, the article intends to analyze whether the alienated electoral behavior (abstention or blank vote) may be understood through the use ofpolitical culture indicators. The few works dealing with the issue in Brazil draw on the socio-economic and demographic bases of alienation as well as official election turnout data for reference. Our empirical basis, by contrast, is a postelection survey (by ESEB) which allows us to test and compare the culturalist hypothesis with other explanations for electoral alienation.
PARTICIPA O POLíTICA: A CENTRALIDADE DOS REPERTóRIOS
Julian Borba
Revista Debates , 2012,
Abstract: This article analyses the relations between different modalities of political participation, using as empirical framework the cases of Brazil, Portugal and Chile. The data were taken from the International Social Survey Programme. This study included questions regarding 13 distinct modalities of political participation. The results corroborate theoretical propositions which define these modalities as converging. In this sense, the fact that a citizen takes part in one form of participation (among those studied) is usually a strong predictor of their engagement in another modality. Despite internal differences between the countries under analysis and the fact that the evidence was clearer in regard to Brazil and Portugal, the above statement applies to the entire universe of the study.
