Indiferen?a, simetria e perfei??o segundo Leibniz
Danowski, Déborah;
Kriterion: Revista de Filosofia , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-512X2001000200003
Abstract: in the theodicy, leibniz presents three different solutions to the sophism of buridan's ass, and more generally, to the problem of the liberty of indifference. the first criticizes the idea that, even in a situation of perfect equilibrium and complete absence of a determining reason, men (as opposed to irrational animals) would be able to act. the other two deny the very possibility of perfect equilibrium and symmetry in the universe, such that this sophism looses its meaning.
David Hume, o come?o e o fim
Danowski, Déborah;
Kriterion: Revista de Filosofia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-512X2011000200003
Abstract: this paper analises some of the abundant ficticious situations conceived by hume throughout his works to represent the absence of experience characterizing either an initial state, where experience doesn't exist yet, or a state where it doesn't exist anymore. we suggest that these fictitious situations, besides their more immediate goal of calling our attention to the fact that experience and habit are the only possible grounds for our causal inferences, also reveal the permanent tension between two opposite forces of attraction, to which our existences are subject according to hume: one main force, that pulls us in the direction of the regularity and uniformity of natural laws and human nature, leading us away from the singularity, the pure difference among atomic perceptions, and the original indifference of imagination; and another force, which we perceive only in a shadowy way, but which nevertheless is present to us as a constant threat underneath all our associations, inferences, beliefs, and passions: the reign of pure singularity, the descent back into indifference, the ruin of human nature.
Leibniz e Hume sobre a indiferen?a
Danowski, Déborah;
Kriterion: Revista de Filosofia , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-512X2003000200005
Abstract: in this paper i briefly compare some of the divergent reasons given by leibniz and hume for their common criticism against the idea of liberty of indifference. for leibniz, the harmonic connection among concrete individual substances is expressed exclusively by means of relations that are intrinsic to their complete concepts, so that indifference can only exist within the sphere of incomplete notions or concepts of reason, the only one where it is possible to isolate a few terms and relations from all the infinite others that compose the complete substances. in hume, there is a de facto impossibility of stepping out of the regularity of the extrinsic causal relations, which, by means of the application of general rules, ends up encompassing the whole of experience, albeit without any rational guarantee. in consequence, he confines indifference to a quasi ficticious native state of the mind, which precedes experience, or else to the limited sphere of a few situations that make this native state reappear within experience itself.

Leibniz e as voltas do tempo
Déborah Danowski
DoisPontos , 2005,
Abstract: In this paper I compare some definitions that Leibniz gives of the notion of perfection with various models of a hypothetical and often mutually incompatible character which he proposes in order to represent the way that this perfection develops through time in created substances. Based on this comparison, I put forward some tentative ideas as to how these models would or would not function metaphysically, with regard to the constitution and internal progress of substances.
This article studies how Pierre Corneille conducted his carrier in two different places – Rouen and Paris –, while examining what was at stake in the form of polyactivity that structured his professional practices for many years. More generally, the text analyzes – through this case study – how the dialectical relationship between Paris and the provinces, which began to solidify in France in the first half on the 17th century, contributed to shaping the emerging sphere of literary practices. The analysis underscores that Corneille, having tried for many years to play it both ways – for example by using his Parisian reputation to better his social position in Rouen – ended up settling in Paris and adhering to the power of the centralized institutions of literary life, such as that of the Académie Fran aise. For these powers seemed the only ones capable of validating the central position which he wished to claim for himself in the literary sphere. From this perspective, provincial men of letters seem to have actively worked towards the actual and symbolic domination of Paris, from which they obtained in return both reputation and status.

La lucha continúa: challenges for a post-Navy Vieques
Déborah Berman Santana
Centro Journal , 2006,
Abstract: In recent years the decades-long struggle to stop the U.S. Navy from bombing Vieques, Puerto Rico, end military occupation of most of the island, has made international headlines. However, co n ce rns about Vieques s future o n ce the bombings ce ased and the bases closed hav e aroused less publicity. In the early 1990s some Vieques activists committed themselves to working on the island s greatest challenges, by advocating the Four D s: Demilitarization, Decontamination, Devolution (return of lands), and (community-based, sustainable) Development. This article examines the new phase of the struggle for an economically, s o c i a lly and eco l o g i c a lly healthy Vieques, and its implications for similar struggles elsewhere.
