Trad,Leny Alves Bomfim;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232012000300008
Abstract: in this article i reflect on the peculiarities of contemporary ethnographic research, highlighting some challenges inherent to this process. the discussion focuses in particular on the following aspects: the limits imposed by the clear reduction in immersion time in the field; the challenges in learning about ethnographic work, either in the process of observation or interaction in the field, or in the task of textual production; issues of an epistemological and ethical nature that deserve particular attention on the part of practitioners of the ethnographic approach and the scientific community in general. it is especially appropriate to foster debate around the ethnographic method, addressing its peculiarities, operational complexity and potential as a tool for knowledge production, in the sphere of health/public health, bearing in mind the marked increase of this approach in this field.
Processo migratório e saúde mental: rupturas e continuidade na vida cotidiana
Trad, Leny Alves Bomfim;
Physis: Revista de Saúde Coletiva , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-73312003000100007
Abstract: migratory movements constitute a complex type of social mobility, involving a break with the basic references orienting individual conduct. the current study follows the migratory itinerary of brazilians who emigrated to barcelona, spain, analyzing the psychological socio-cultural factors intervening in the migratory process. the concept of migratory process emphasizes the relationship between time and space. in their new community, immigrants are exposed to environmental and social transformations, especially in daily life, which they gradually attempt to understand and incorporate. we can distinguish various stages in this process: moments characterized by breaks and the construction of a new social reality.
Trad, Leny A. Bomfim;
Physis: Revista de Saúde Coletiva , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-73312009000300013
Abstract: in the two last decades it has been evidenced a significant development of focal groups as a data collection instrument in researches in the field of collective health in brazil. by occupying the function of main technique or as a complementary and qualitative strategy, its use attends invariably to the purpose of apprehending perceptions, opinions and feelings, once is faced to a determined theme within an interactive environment. the regularity regarding the use of the focal group technique contrasts with the observed variation of requirements and practical procedures described. this paper presents concepts, purposes and procedures related to the focal group technique and discusses its practical use in research, particularly in the health field. so this work allies data from specialized literature review with reflections arising of the author's own experience with the use of this technique, especially in health evaluation researches.
Históricos cursos de Psicologia Social no Brasil
Bomfim, Elizabeth de Melo;
Psicologia & Sociedade , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-71822004000200005
Abstract: the article is a reflection on four courses of social psychology ministered in brazil during the first half of the twentieth century. the documental legacy brings to light educational practices, informing us of its thematical and methodological contents besides theoretical influences. opened to the contributions of different fields of knowledge, social psychology shows itself in a moment of fragility, imprecision and construction as a scientific field.
Bomfim, Elizabeth de Melo;
Psicologia & Sociedade , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-71822006000100011
Abstract: one important legacy left by donald pierson to human and social sciences in brazil is his work life in a brazilian valley. this article is a reflection about the author and his work, showing man's background in his habitat, which constitutes, in pierson's words, the stage for a rare and clear relationship. it emphasizes the main contributions of the design sketched by the research, pointing out the methodological procedures and some dialogues between researchers and communities.
Wyllamy Bomfim Andrade Santos
Revista Letrando , 2012,
Multifractal analysis of the irregular set for almost-additive sequences via large deviations
Thiago Bomfim,Paulo Varandas
Mathematics , 2014, DOI: 10.1088/0951-7715/28/10/3563
Abstract: In this paper we introduce a notion of free energy and large deviations rate function for asymptotically additive sequences of potentials via an approximation method by families of continuous potentials. We provide estimates for the topological pressure of the set of points whose non-additive sequences are far from the limit described through Kingman's sub-additive ergodic theorem and give some applications in the context of Lyapunov exponents for diffeomorphisms and cocycles, and Shannon-McMillan-Breiman theorem for Gibbs measures.
The gluing orbit property, uniform hyperbolicity and large deviations principles for semiflows
Thiago Bomfim,Paulo Varandas
Mathematics , 2015,
Abstract: In this article we introduce a gluing orbit property, weaker than specification, for both maps and flows. We prove that flows with the $C^1$-robust gluing orbit property are uniformly hyperbolic and that every uniformly hyperbolic flow satisfies the gluing orbit property. We also prove a level-1 large deviations principle and a level-2 large deviations lower bound for for semiflows with the gluing orbit property. As a consequence we establish a level-1 large deviations principle for hyperbolic flows and every continuous observable, and also a level-2 large deviations lower bound. Finally, since many non-uniformly hyperbolic flows can be modeled as suspension flows we also provide criteria for such flows to satisfy uniform and non-uniform versions of the gluing orbit property.
Multifractal analysis for weak Gibbs measures: from large deviations to irregular sets
Thiago Bomfim,Paulo Varandas
Mathematics , 2014, DOI: 10.1017/etds.2015.46
Abstract: In this article we prove estimates for the topological pressure of the set of points whose Birkhoff time averages are far from the space averages corresponding to the unique equilibrium state that has a weak Gibbs property. In particular, if $f$ has an expanding repeller and $\phi$ is an H\"older continuous potential we prove that the topological pressure of the set of points whose accumulation values of Birkhoff averages belong to some interval $I\subset \mathbb R$ can be expressed in terms of the topological pressure of the whole system and the large deviations rate function. As a byproduct we deduce that most irregular sets for maps with the specification property have topological pressure strictly smaller than the whole system. Some extensions to a non-uniformly hyperbolic setting, level-2 irregular sets and hyperbolic flows are also given.

Occupational Diseases and Environmental Medicine (ODEM) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/odem.2018.62005
Abstract: Background: Large-scale cane cultivation can promote health impacts of workers, resulting from weight bearing and repetitive movements. Musculoskeletal conditions can alter balance and increase risk of falls. Aim of Work: The objective of this study is to identify clinical characteristics and to correlate balance with functional capacity in ex-cane cutters. Methods: This was a descriptive exploratory study, 42 former workers of the cane cut, with mean age of 49 (±13) years, who were submitted to balance evaluation through the Berg Balance Scale (BSE) and the functional capacity was evaluated by the Incremental Shuttle Walk Test (ISWT). To investigate respiratory symptoms, the Medical Research Council questionnaire was used. Results: The individuals reached a mean of 52 points in BSE, considered low to moderate risk for falls and the average distance traveled of 446.2 (±188.5) meters, corresponding to 52.9% (±23.1) of the normal distance. Weak and negative correlations were found between changes in balance and exposure time (r2-0.16). Conclusion: It is concluded that excessive physical effort contributes to changes in the balance and, consequently, diminish functional capacity.
