Rect@ , 2012,
Abstract: The present work is the result of the investigation realized by the authoresses on programming languages applied to Non Life Actuarial Mathematics (NLAM). The main objective of this paper is to present and to expose the use of the R programming language in NLAM looking at the experience initiated at the University of Barcelona (UB) during 2009-2010. The contribution of the paper consists of the summary and application of libraries realized by different authors on the topics included in NLAM and its improvement with functions of own production. The article includes, for some of the different blocks that are treated inside NLAM at the UB, a small theoretical summary and numerical examples with R, and with real data of insurance portfolios that can be found in basic papers of actuarial science.
Old-age inflammatory bowel disease onset: A different problem?

World Journal of Gastroenterology , 2011, DOI: 10.3748/wjg.v17.i22.2734
Abstract: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in patients aged > 60 accounts for 10%-15% of cases of the disease. Diganostic methods are the same as for other age groups. Care has to be taken to distinguish an IBD colitis from other forms of colitis that can mimick clinically, endoscopically and even histologically the IBD entity. The clinical pattern in ulcerative colitis (UC) is proctitis and left-sided UC, while granulomatous colitis with an inflammatory pattern is more common in Crohn’s disease (CD). The treatment options are those used in younger patients, but a series of considerations related to potential pharmacological interactions and side effects of the drugs must be taken into account. The safety profile of conventional immunomodulators and biological therapy is acceptable but more data are required on the safety of use of these drugs in the elderly population. Biological therapy has risen question on the possibility of increased side effects, however this needs to be confirmed. Adherence to performing all the test prior to biologic treatment administration is very important. The overall response to treatment is similar in the different patient age groups but elderly patients have fewer recurrences. The number of hospitalizations in patients > 65 years is greater than in younger group, accounting for 25% of all admissions for IBD. Mortality is similar in UC and slightly higher in CD, but significantly increased in hospitalized patients. Failure of medical treatment continues to be the most common indication for surgery in patients aged > 60 years. Age is not considered a contraindication for performing restorative proctocolectomy with an ileal pouch-anal anastomosis. However, incontinence evaluation should be taken into account an individualized options should be considered
Rehabilitación Urbana en Espa a (1989-2010). Barreras actuales y sugerencias para su eliminación

Abstract: At the beginning of this century, the cities of our country face a challenge that, in quantitative terms, goes beyond the action referred to the rehabilitation of historic centres and XIX century extensions. This challenge is the rehabilitation of a specific fabric of our cities: neighbourhoods built in the period of 1940-1980, which are undergoing processes of serious urban degradation and can be identified as vulnerable urban areas. This article discusses the strategies taken from the various government levels in urban rehabilitation, and the experiences initiated, with the aim of detecting what are the main barriers of all kind (legal, social, economic, cultural) that prevent the systematic practice of these initiatives, which today still have an experimental and minority character, and to forward proposals for action to achieve comprehensive and systematic urban rehabilitation in these neighbourhoods.

del Val,Ek; Dirzo,Rodolfo;
Interciencia , 2004,
Abstract: myrmecophily, the occurrence of mutualistic interactions between ants and plants, is a fascinating subject that has attracted the interest of naturalists and ecologists for a long time. although myrmecophily includes a diverse array of interactions, such as the development of epiphytic gardens by ants and seed dispersal by ants, it is traditionally associated to anti-herbivore defensive interactions by ants, guarding animals which are in turn rewarded by plants via the production of food and housing structures. in this paper a brief historical analysis of this field of study is presented and the adaptations of plants to maintain the myrmecophytic interaction are discussed. in addition, an analysis is made of the available literature on the subject, from which the geographic, taxonomic and ecological distribution of myrmecophily is discussed. such analysis reveals that this interaction is predominant in the tropics, but particularly in the neotropics; that it is represented in a wide variety of plant lineages and that myrmecophytes are predominantly, though not exclusively, species of rapid growth rates, associated to habitats of high light availability. throughout the text some of the promissory directions in the study of myrmecophily are highlighted and the opportunities that this field of enquiry offers to study the evolution of plant traits that are influenced by animals, and vice versa, are discussed.
