Computation of Electron Impact Cross Sections from Molecules of Astrophysical Importance  [PDF]

Abstract: Computations were performed for calculating cross sections of electron impact scattering from astro-physical targets CaF, HCN and H2S at energies lower than their ionization potential. The results show that the use of highly accurate R-matrix method which includes all the relevant physics and chemistry of the molecule in its formalism generate features significantly different from the simple static exchange calculation. The data obtained shows interesting structures in the eigen-phase sums which may be attributed to the dissociation channel of the molecule.

This module was created to teach the new physician about the vital sign of temperature. The module is blended to incorporate online learning via both direct and asynchronous methods, as well as face-to-face interactions using high fidelity simulation.

Abstract: Using the Puerto Rican Maternal and Infant Health Study dataset (PRMIHS), the predictors of relationship status were examined via probit regression. The strongest predictors of relationship status found were interactions between bi-nary variables for the age that a respondent first had sexual intercourse and for the age that a respondent first entered into a union (N = 1452). This paper con-cludes by arguing that the results provide support for viewing union status as being primarily dependent on the people involved in the union instead of being primarily dependent on factors external to the people themselves.
The Utility of Routine Electrolytes in Patients with Sickle Cell Anemia Presenting with an Acute Pain Crisis  [PDF]

Abstract: Background: The evaluation of sickle cell vaso-occlusive crisis may include the measurement of the patient’s CBC and reticulocyte count. Twelve clinical criteria have been previously published for patients at risk for electrolyte abnormalities, but a chemistry panel is often ordered as well occasionally without a true indication. Objectives: Our objective was to determine whether routine measurement of electrolytes can be safely avoided in patients with SCA who present to the ED with an acute painful crisis. Methods: This was a retrospective study of patients with SCA who presented with a painful crisis. All visits were considered separately. All medical records were reviewed for any electrolyte abnormalities and any treatment(s). Patients with an electrolyte abnormality had their medical record screened for the presence of specific criteria, and if any interventions or consultations were performed due to the results. Results: One hundred twenty-two unique patients were found to have one or more abnormal laboratory value over a total of 337 distinct patient visits, with a total of 686 abnormal values. Of these, only 2 laboratory values caused a change in treatment or disposition, both of which were replacement of potassium for hypokalemia. There were no consultations from the ED to any service other than the admitting team in any of the 337 distinct patient visits. Conclusions: For SCA patients presenting to the ED with a painful vaso-occlusive crisis, measuring electrolytes in the absence of another more specific and established clinical reason, is very likely unnecessary and can be safely avoided.

Abstract: Beginning learners in medicine face a daunting challenge of utilizing information gained in the first two years of medical school in a clinical setting in the latter half of their medical school and into residency. Constant interruptions and lack of knowledge are but two of the factors that may hamper the early clinician’s ability to safely and efficiently care for patients. Thus, a system that organizes thought into specific compartments—compartmentalization may benefit the learner by separating tasks into smaller, more specific objectives to complete prior to moving on in the diagnostic algorithm. Developing a system that utilizes compartmentalization may ease the transition into clinical practice using simple and effective tools that allow the beginning physician to mitigate the invariable distractions and interruptions that occur daily to allow for the safe practice of medicine.
Bilateral Luxatio Erecta: A Case Report  [PDF]

Abstract: Luxatio erecta is a highly uncommon type of shoulder dislocation, representing approximately 0.5% of all shoulder dislocations fitting into this category. In this paper, we present the case of a patient who presented post trauma with bilateral inferior glenohumeral joint dislocations (also called Luxatio Erecta). Considering that Luxatio Erecta only has a 0.5% chance of being present with a unilateral dislocation, the probability of a patient presenting 2 of these dislocations at the same time is approximately 0.25% (0.5% × 0.5% = 0.25%). In addition to this, Luxatio Erecta frequently presents with injuries to the brachial plexus and/or a humeral fracture. Despite this, neither of our patient’s dislocations were associated with any fractures or neurovascular injury and both were successfully reduced the Emergency Department. Both the patient’s presentation and outcome are quite uncommon, which makes this case an invaluable opportunity to go over the unique characteristics to Luxatio Erecta.

Abstract: A carrier wave in a 5-dimensional wave group is examined for information on electromagnetic waves and on particle probability amplitudes. Simulations by Maxwell’s equations show that the phase and group velocities in electromagnetic waves are equal, both in vacuo and in dielectric media. By contrast, particle probability amplitudes in wave packet motion are more complicated. A dependence of rest mass on relative phase and group velocities is derived by consistency. Occurrences that are simultaneous and connected on wave fronts in the rest frame, appear separated when observed in moving frames. Uncertainties in space and time are linked by the probability amplitude wave group.
A Travelling Wave Group II: Antiparticles in a Force Field  [PDF]

The travelling wave group is a solution to the wave equation. With a Gaussian envelope, this stable wave does not spread as it propagates. The group is derived for electromagnetic waves and converted with Planck’s law to quantized photons. The resulting wave is a probability amplitude, and this is adapted to particles subject to special relativity. By including mass and by inverting the wave group, a description for antiparticles is derived. The consequent explanation is consistent with Dirac’s relativistic equation and with his theory of the electron; while being more specific than his idea of the wave packet, and more stable. The travelling wave group is extended to describe the positron, either free or in an external field.

The Structure of Icosahedral Quasicrystals and Seven Blunders in Quasicrystallography  [PDF]

This structural study of quasicrystals is based on extremely dense icosahedral unit cells that are systematically and consistently measured for the first time. The structure and pattern indexation are 3-dimensional. A formula is given for scattering from atoms in hierarchic arrangement and geometric series. The Quasi-Bragg law is a new law in physics, with possible applications beyond crystallography. The structure is compared with previous, unsuccessful, and contradictory, attempts at analysis.

Analysis of the Metric in Quasicrystals—Linear Response in Logarithmically Periodic Solids  [PDF]

The metric, that enables measurement of structural data from diffraction in quasicrystals, is analyzed. A modified compromise spacing effect is the consequence of scattering of periodic electromagnetic or electron waves by atoms arranged on a geometric grid in an ideal hierarchic structure. This structure is infinitely extensive, uniquely aligned and uniquely icosahedral. The approximate analytic factor that converts the geometric terms base τ, into periodic terms modulo 2π, is \"\". It matches the simulated metric cs=0.947, consistently used in second (Bragg) order, over a wide scale from atomic dimensions to sixth order superclusters.
