Abstract In general, the management of the municipalsolid waste is being carried through a precarious way by theBrazilian municipal administrations. However, according tothe IBGE, it’s being verified a strong improvement trend inthe final destination of the garbage collected in the countrylast years. The generation of wastes depends on some factorssuch as cultural level, consumption habits, income, climate,sex and age of the population and its reduction is related to amanagement program based on three aspects: reduction inthe source, reusing and recycling. This present work focuson implantation of a selective collecting program in theurban area of Irati city (PR) through the CollectorsAssociation. The proposal of implantation of the selectivecollecting was divided in two stages: logistics andenvironmental education, both already being fulfilled. In thetwelve first months of the program, the results had shown aconsiderable increasing in the volume of material collectedsince the beginning of the program reaching 11.5% of thematerial generated in the city providing fixed job andincome for 24 collectors who had been so far workedinformally in the streets of the city. World Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology (WJNST) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/wjnst.2014.43019
Abstract:
Control valves are widely used in industry to control fluid flow in several applications. In nuclear power systems they are crucial for the safe operation of plants. Therefore, the necessity of improvements in monitoring and diagnosis methods started to be of extreme relevance, establishing as main goal of the reliability and readiness of the system components. The main focus of this work is to study the development of a model of non-intrusive monitoring and diagnosis applied to process control valves using artificial intelligence by fuzzy logic technique, contributing to the development of predictive methodologies identifying faults in incipient state. Specially in nuclear power plants, the predictive maintenance contributes to the security factor in order to diagnose in advance the occurrence of a possible failure, preventing severs situations. The control valve analyzed belongs to a steam plant which simulates the secondary circuit of a PWR—Pressurized Water Reactor. The maintenance programs are being implemented based on the ability to diagnose modes of degradation and to take measures to prevent incipient failures, improving plant reliability and reducing maintenance costs. The approach described in this paper represents an alternative departure from the conventional qualitative techniques of system analysis. The methodology used in this project is based on signatures analysis, considering the pressure (psi) in the actuator and the stem displacement (mm) of the valve. Once the measurements baseline of the control valve is taken, it is possible to detect long-term deviations during valve lifetime, detecting in advance valve failures. This study makes use of MATLAB language through the “fuzzy logic toolbox” which uses the method of inference “Mamdani”, acting by fuzzy conjunction, through Triangular Norms (t-norm) and Triangular Conorms (t-conorm). The main goal is to obtain more detailed information contained in the measured data, correlating them to failure situations in the incipient stage.
Evaluation by ICP-MS of Essential, Nonessential and Toxic Elements in Brazilian Fish and Seafood Samples  [PDF]

Food and Nutrition Sciences (FNS) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/fns.2012.39165
Abstract: Fish is considered one of the healthiest foods due to the high levels of several important cardioprotective compounds such as long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E. However, due to widespread environmental pollution, high levels of contaminants may also be present in fish and seafood samples, which may counteract the beneficial effects of consumption of this food. With this in mind, the aims of this study were: 1) to examine both toxic and essential chemical elements in seafood and river and sea fish samples sold in different Brazilian regions by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS); 2) to estimate the daily intake of these chemical elements by Brazilians. The toxic elements Ba, Cd, Pb, Sr, V and Sb were found in higher concentrations in seafood than in either sea or river fish, while As concentrations were higher in both seafood and sea fish than in river fish. On the other hand, Hg levels were higher in river and sea fish. Concentrations of the essential chemical elements Co, Mn, Cu, Fe, Mg, Zn and Mo were significantly higher in seafood compared with both sorts of fish except for Se, whose levels were similar in seafood and sea fish. Daily intake of all chemical elements was estimated on the basis of a calculation of the amount of fish consumed by Brazilian households (mean fish and seafood consumption of 11.0 g/person/day). The amount of toxic element in fish and seafood did not represent a risk for the Brazilian people. Moreover, fish and seafood seem to be a good source of selenium.
Exact solutions of Brans-Dicke cosmology and the cosmic coincidence problem
Carneiro, S.;Montenegro Jr., A. E.;
Brazilian Journal of Physics , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-97332005000700009
Abstract: we present some cosmological solutions of brans-dicke theory, characterized by a decaying vacuum energy density and by a constant relative matter density. with these features, they shed light on the cosmological constant problems, leading to a presently small vacuum term, and to a constant ratio between the vacuum and matter energy densities. by fixing the only free parameter of our solutions, we obtain cosmological parameters in accordance with observations of the relative matter density, the universe age and redshift-distance relations.

Physics , 2006, DOI: 10.1088/0264-9381/24/2/004
Abstract: We investigate cosmological solutions of Brans-Dicke theory with both the vacuum energy density and the gravitational constant decaying linearly with the Hubble parameter. A particular class of them, with constant deceleration factor, sheds light on the cosmological constant problems, leading to a presently small vacuum term, and to a constant ratio between the vacuum and matter energy densities. By fixing the only free parameter of these solutions, we obtain cosmological parameters in accordance with observations of both the relative matter density and the universe age. In addition, we have three other solutions, with Brans-Dicke parameter w = -1 and negative cosmological term, two of them with a future singularity of big-rip type. Although interesting from the theoretical point of view, two of them are not in agreement with the observed universe. The third one leads, in the limit of large times, to a constant relative matter density, being also a possible solution to the cosmic coincidence problem.
Consumption behaviour and persistently high inflation: evidence from Latin America
Mello Jr., Luiz R. de;Carneiro, Francisco G.;
Revista Brasileira de Economia , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-71402000000200005
Abstract: a major difficulty in estimating consumption functions when prices are not fixed is the perverse effect of inflation on private consumption behaviour. this paper examines an euler equation-type consumption function to analyse consumption behaviour in a context of persistent high inflation. the paper examines how widespread backward-looking indexation and/or partial or total currency substitution in the case of dollarisation affect private consumption behaviour. widespread indexation and/or dollarisation are expected to create a type of insurance against adverse investment outcomes. this leads to ex post efficient risk allocation and provides an important mechanism for smoothing consumption in the presence of uninsurable income shocks, such as inflation surprises. latin american data is used in this paper due to the recent history of chronic inflation in the region.

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2000,
Abstract: Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) are very frequent in the whole world. Males who do not use a condom during their sexual relations are at great risk. We report cases of STD during six months of observation, among homosexual/bisexual males who participate in the Project Horizonte. There were 16 cases of genital warts, 6 cases of human immunodeficiency virus infection, 24 cases of unspecific urethritis, 28 cases of herpes simplex virus infection, 30 cases of syphilis, 58 cases of gonorrhea and 84 cases of pediculosis. We concluded that a condom must be used in all sexual relations and new counseling techniques are needed, to avoid this situation.
