Abstract: In this work, we propose a method to synthesize vanadium (IV) 2-benzyli-dene-1-indanone derivatives, used to prepare film structures by thermal evaporation. The complexes possess high melting point allowing the using of vacuum deposition methods. All the samples were grown at room temperature (25) and low deposition rates (0.4 Å/s). The surface morphology and structure of the deposited films were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and spectroscopy dispersive energy (EDS). Optical absorption studies of the complex films were performed in the 200 - 1100 nm wavelength range. The Tauc band gap (Eg) of the thin films was determined from the (αhν)1/2 vs. hν plots for indirect transitions. The vanadium (IV) complex films show optical activation energies in the range of organic semiconductors. Multilayer nylon 11/vanadium indanone devices were fabricated using ITO and silver electrodes. The d.c. electrical properties of the device were also investigated. It was found that the temperature-dependent electric current in the structure showed a semiconductor behavior. At lower voltages below 7 V, the current density in the forward direction was found to obey an ohmic I-V relationship; for higher voltages above 7 V, the conduction was dominated by a space-charge-limited (SCLC) mechanism. The electrical activation energies (Ea) of the complexes were in the 2.17 - 2.31 eV range.

Abstract: TGF-β family members play a relevant role in tumorigenic processes, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but a specific implication of the Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) subfamily is still unknown. Although originally isolated from fetal liver, little is known about BMP9, a BMP family member, and its role in liver physiology and pathology. Our results show that BMP9 promotes growth in HCC cells, but not in immortalized human hepatocytes. In the liver cancer cell line HepG2, BMP9 triggers Smad1,5,8 phosphorylation and inhibitor of DNA binding 1 (Id1) expression up- regulation. Importantly, by using chemical inhibitors, ligand trap and gene silencing approaches we demonstrate that HepG2 cells autocrinely produce BMP9 that supports their proliferation and anchorage independent growth. Additionally, our data reveal that in HepG2 cells BMP9 triggers cell cycle progression, and strikingly, completely abolishes the increase in the percentage of apoptotic cells induced by long-term incubation in low serum. Collectively, our data unveil a dual role for BMP9, both promoting a proliferative response and exerting a remarkable anti-apoptotic function in HepG2 cells, which result in a robust BMP9 effect on liver cancer cell growth. Finally, we show that BMP9 expression is increased in 40% of human HCC tissues compared with normal human liver as revealed by immunohistochemistry analysis, suggesting that BMP9 signaling may be relevant during hepatocarcinogenesis in vivo. Our findings provide new clues for a better understanding of BMPs contribution, and in particular BMP9, in HCC pathogenesis that may result in the development of effective and targeted therapeutic interventions.
La política migratoria en Espa a Un análisis de largo plazo
Sánchez Alonso, Blanca
Revista Internacional de Sociologia , 2011,
Abstract: The aim of this article is to analyse migration policies in Spain from 1900 until present time. The basic idea is that the so called gap hypothesis (significant and persistent gaps between official migration policies and actual policy outcomes) can also be applied to historical situations. In the Spanish case, the gap between stated policy objectives and outcomes is a constant over time both in the phase of external migration and in current immigration policies. The article is divided in two main sections. The first one presents a brief summary of the main trends in migration policies in Spain since the beginning of the 20th century. The second (and longer) section analyzes the main gaps in Spanish migration policies. Policy gaps are of two kinds: those caused by objectives impossible to fulfil and those caused by the frequent use of inadequate policy instruments.

The application of analytical procedures is based on the expectation that relationships exist among financial statements data on a continuous basis. The presence of these relationships provides audit evidence as to the completeness, accuracy and validity of the data produced by the accounting system. Auditors generate expected values and compare them with financial statements values. In case of discrepancies, the auditor has to generate hypotheses with regard to potential causes, evaluate these hypotheses and select the most plausible one.Auditing standards require that auditors routinely have to consult management for explanations of unexpected fluctuations. Prior empirical research revealed that management explanations influence hypotheses generation and lead to a biased analytical procedures process. This experimental study is based on a material unexpected fluctuation in gross margin. It is the first German study which investigates the effect of management explanations on hypothesis generation, information search, hypothesis evaluation, and final judgment stages of the analytical procedures process. The inherited hypotheses increased effectiveness of the analytical procedures process performed by non-industry specialists when this explanation reflected the correct cause. Furthermore, the management explanation had a negative effect on the efficiency of industry specialists when it reflected the correct cause. Overall, a negative effect of management explanations on the analytic
Foreign Direct Investment and Trade: Complements or Substitutes? Empirical Evidence for the European Union  [PDF]

Technology and Investment (TI) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ti.2012.32013
Abstract: International Trade and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) have grown at fast paces during the last decades. At this point, however, it is not clear whether trade and investment are regarded by firms as complementary ways of accessing other markets, or, instead, if they are employed as alternative strategies. This paper examines this issue empirically, for the particular case of Europe, an area in which commercial and economic integration has gained remarkable momentum since 1992. More specifically, it tests whether the reduction of trade barriers over time among the members of the European Union (EU) has increased not only trade flows but also FDI within those countries. A gravity model is estimated using the Hausman-Taylor estimation technique—to circumvent time invariability and endogeneity—for intra Europe FDI and, separately, for FDI to the EU members with origin in third countries. In addition to trade integration measures, this paper also analyzes the potential role of other traditional determinants of FDI, as the market size of the host country and the cost differential among home-host economies. The results suggest that EU commercial integration and FDI reinforce each other, thus being complements rather than substitutes in Europe. This effect is apparent for the intra-EU FDI and also for investment coming from countries outside the EU. Cost differentials are not as relevant as the possibility of gaining market share which leads us to conclude that in the EU the FDI pattern follows a horizontal strategy rather than a FDI vertical model.

Abstract: We have previously shown that oval cells harboring a genetically inactivated Met tyrosine kinase (Met?/? oval cells) are more sensitive to TGF-β-induced apoptosis than cells expressing a functional Met (Metflx/flx), demonstrating that the HGF/Met axis plays a pivotal role in oval cell survival. Here, we have examined the mechanism behind this effect and have found that TGF-β induced a mitochondria-dependent apoptotic cell death in Metflx/flx and Met?/? oval cells, associated with a marked increase in levels of the BH3-only proteins Bim and Bmf. Bmf plays a key role during TGF-β-mediated apoptosis since knocking down of BMF significantly diminished the apoptotic response in Met?/? oval cells. TGF-β also induced oxidative stress accompanied by NADPH oxidase 4 (Nox4) mRNA up-regulation and decreased protein levels of antioxidant enzymes. Antioxidants inhibit both TGF-β-induced caspase 3 activity and Bmf up-regulation, revealing an oxidative stress-dependent Bmf regulation by TGF-β. Notably, oxidative stress-related events were strongly amplified in Met?/? oval cells, emphasizing the critical role of Met in promoting survival. Pharmacological inhibition of PI3K did impair HGF-driven protection from TGF-β-induced apoptosis and increased sensitivity of Metflx/flx oval cells to TGF-? by enhancing oxidative stress, reaching apoptotic indices similar to those obtained in Met?/? oval cells. Interestingly, both PI3K inhibition and/or knockdown itself resulted in caspase-3 activation and loss of viability in Metflx/flx oval cells, whereas no effect was observed in Met?/? oval cells. Altogether, results presented here provide solid evidences that both paracrine and autocrine HGF/Met signaling requires PI3K to promote mouse hepatic oval cell survival against TGF-β-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis.

Abstract: when dentin is etching the former (depth of dentin demineralization) excess the latter (depth of dentin diffusion / impregnation), a zone of hydroxyapatite depleted collagen fibers is left exposed, i.e., not resin infiltrated and nonhybridized. to avoid this, one option are the self-etching dentin bonding systems, that decalcify the inorganic component and infiltrate the collagen fibers at the same time by the action of acidic primers. in this article, the selfetching systems are characterized, and, their interfacial bond strength and the depth of demineralization of acidic primers are analysed.
