Bittencourt, José;
Anais do Museu Paulista: História e Cultura Material , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-47142001000100005
Abstract: the national history museum (museu histórico nacional), in rio de janeiro, was created in 1922, as part of the commemorations of brazil's independence centennial party. throughout the next 38 years, it has been run by gustavo barroso. this intellectual person, a typical character of the brazilian “ republic of the letters”, left a personal mark in the mhn (the museum), crystallized in the conservative discourse expressed in the exhibitions. based in carlos ginzburg's theoretical formulations, as presented in an article entitles “ signs - routes of an indicting paradigm”, as well as in various essays about museums as discourse, the author analyses the exhibition in the mhn in the 30's, 40's and 50's. getting an additional support in the scientific production of the conservatives, published in books and in the institutional magazine, the “ annals of the national history museum (“anais do museu histórico nacional”), tries to see the exhibition circuit as a representation of the positions filled by the “active agents of history” - aristocracy, civil and military public workers, among other categories - in relation to a category which is not clearly defined, the “people”, which was represented by its absence.
Bittencourt, Rosane;
Revista Brasileira de Hematologia e Hemoterapia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-84842007000100012
Abstract: the use of maintenance therapy for patients with multiple myeloma (mm) and complete or almost complete remission is still under discussion. although not curative, high dose chemotherapy followed by autologous bone marrow transplantation significantly prolongs overall survival time. the addition of maintenance therapy seems to be a valuable alternative aiming at longer inactive disease periods (plateau) or even as an effective therapy for minimal residual disease. it may also bring higher rates of complete response to patients with an initial partial response. over more than two decades, maintenance therapy for mm has been discussed and proposed. since then various drugs and their combinations have been studied for this purpose, such as interferon-alpha, glucocorticoids - including dexamethasone and prednisone - and the more recently antiangiogenic drugs including thalidomide and its analogs. clinical trials with each of these agents have shown advantages and, sometimes, disadvantages in terms of disease-free survival, overall survival and toxicity. a general review of these studies draws attention to the lack of evidence favoring unequivocal benefits in overall survival. in a time when novel and promising therapies arrive we shall emphasize the need of individual therapeutic approaches in terms of maintenance therapy, considering the prognosis and risk factors of each patient.
Bittencourt, Jane;
Revista da Faculdade de Educa??o , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-25551998000100003
Abstract: this paper presents a discussion regarding the problems involved in using computers in education from a didactical and epistemological point of view. the discussion takes as an example the cabri-géomètre software, a teaching assistent system in the elementary geometry domain. we intend that the considerations about this software could be useful as a reference point to more general questions corcerning the use of educational softwares. we aim specially to enlarge the scope of this discussion, focusing the relationship between knowledge, culture, technology and society.

ABSTRACT: This article shows that Uruguay’s very low long term growth performance, which implies an increasing divergence with respect to the world economy, is explained by specialization and productive problems. Uruguay produces and sells goods with very low dynamics in the world markets, and with slow technology changes. The (neo)liberal and politically conservative development model applied in the last decades, failed in the objective of improving the long term growth rate, because this model implied a productive structure based in natural resources with little value added. This kind of specialization also implies problems in employment generation and distributional affairs. The recent recovery, and some measures applied by the new Gobierno Progresista, were successful in improving wages, in reducing informality, and in solving macroeconomic problems coming from the financial crisis of 2002. But the break up with the past, needed to improve in a sustained way the long run growth rate, however, will need to define a long run strategy looking for a more innovative productive structure by means of the regional integration process.

Standley (Bignoniaceae)
Bittencourt Jr, Nelson S.;
Acta Botanica Brasilica , 1996, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-33061996000100002
Abstract: development of the pollen and anther wall of tabebuia ochracea was studied. the microsporangial wall follows the dicotyledoneous type of ontogeny. the sporogenous tissue in each microsporangium, in transverse section, is organized in a celular strip, with a horseshoe outline. the tapetum is secretory and shows a distinct dual origin. the inner tapetai layer differentiates earlier than the outher layer. the two tapetai layers exibit a distinct structural dimorphism, but before the meiotic divisions of the mmcs the tapetai layers become identical. vacuolation in each tapetai cell, at this stage, is characteristically bipolar. the endothecium shows fibrous thickenings of the spiral type. the pollen grain development conforms with the usual way in angiosperms. the conspicuous growing of the nucleolus and nucleolar vacuolation into the generative cell sugests a high biosynthetic activity.
Andrade,Adriano Bittencourt;
Finisterra - Revista Portuguesa de Geografia , 2010,
Abstract: this text is a theoretical contribution to the contemporary debates on the concept of ?territory?. it seeks to address this concept under the light of the major technical, political and economic changes that have been taking place in the early 21st century. it builds on an understanding of the territory as the materialisation of social relations upon geographical space - one which must not be regarded as a mere repository of human action, but rather as a fundamental element in social dynamics. after this conceptual discussion, the article: i) provides a brief overview of the main features that have characterised global (world) space in the late 20th and early 21st centuries; ii) addresses the impacts of the current socio-political-spatial reconfigurations upon the exercise of citizenship in intra-urban areas; and iii) highlights six specific developments that are crucial to understanding territorial relationships in the contemporary age.
Autores e editores de compêndios e livros de leitura (1810-1910)
Bittencourt, Circe Maria Fernandes;
Educa??o e Pesquisa , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-97022004000300008
Abstract: this article presents considerations about the issue of the authorship of schoolbooks. the role of the authors of a schoolbook has been a controversial topic due to its ambiguity with respect to their rights and legal accountability. a schoolbook can offer substantial financial return to editors and authors, and such situation implies more complex and tense connections. under this perspective, the article seeks to draw a profile of the first authors of brazilian schoolbooks, from 1810 to 1910, with the purpose of characterizing the process through which different agents intervened in such production. the particular features of the production of a schoolbook as a text subjected to curricula, dependent on the approval of official educational bodies, and the commercialization and circulation conditions are indicated to show who were the authors that accepted those impositions. the article also presents the demands placed on the elaboration of schoolbooks by the changes in the books' target public. initially prepared for teachers, the schoolbook gradually becomes a book for the pupil. along this process, the pedagogical framework and the target public begin to demand greater care with language and with the constitution of new "didactic genres" directed at the elementary level. the profile of the author of a schoolbook changes, as does his/her autonomy, accentuating the relations between editor and author.
