Abstract: the research reported in this paper aims to analyze and interpret the responses of teachers who completed a master's degree in teaching mathematics and whose theses focused on mathematical modeling. to understand how these teachers perceived their performance, data were collected through a questionnaire and analysis of their theses, which include testimonies of their students. from the interviews with the teachers, we highlight three major themes: possibilities of change in teaching practice, difficulties in the teaching practice with mathematical modeling, and repercussions for teacher and student learning. the survey results pointed to possibilities of changes in teaching practice, but some obstacles still need to be overcome for these changes to take place.
Origin and evolution of cultivated cucurbits

Abstract: cucurbits (cucurbitaceae) are among the most important plant families supplying humans with edible products and useful fibers. plants of this family are very similar in above ground development, but they have high genetic diversity for fruit shape and other fruit characteristics, resulting in a variety of uses. the objective of this review was to discuss the origin and evolution of the most important cultivated cucurbits. understanding the evolutionary history and domestication process increase the possibility for better exploiting the genetic diversity for cultivar development. the domestication selection in cucurbits was for shape, less bitter flesh, larger and fewer seeds, and larger fruit size, resulting in high genetic diversity within and among cultivated species. this variation can be associated with the wide range of uses that require different shape, size and a constant ratio between fruit length and fruit diameter. the discussion of the breeding history indicates how artificial selection could speed up changes in fruit characteristics to attend specific uses and increase adaptation to a variety of environmental conditions in which cucurbits are growing worldwide. although interspecific hybridization has been employed in cucurbit breeding more than in any other family, there is still a high potential for increasing its application for germplasm and cultivar development.

Abstract: horticulture is an important part of agriculture with many important crops being vegetatively propagated. the objectives of this work were to discuss some of the most important characteristics of vegetatively propagated crops and the breeding strategies to develop and propagate new cultivars. vegetative propagation enables to fix favorable combinations of important traits, very specific chemical compositions, superior genetic variance interactions and high levels of heterozygosity. breeding new cultivars involve few possibilities of genetic recombination by sexual reproduction and many generations of selection and vegetative propagation. marker assisted selection should be useful for genotyping and selecting complementary parents for crossing and for identifying superior genotypes at early stages of selection. the tissue culture technique enables to get disease free stock plants and to maximize its multiplication rate, having an important role in yield and quality of these crops.

Asymptotic behavior for a dissipative plate equation in $R^N$ with periodic coefficients

Abstract: In this work we study the asymptotic behavior of solutions of a dissipative plate equation in $mathbb{R}^N$ with periodic coefficients. We use the Bloch waves decomposition and a convenient Lyapunov function to derive a complete asymptotic expansion of solutions as $t o infty$. In a first approximation, we prove that the solutions for the linear model behave as the homogenized heat kernel.
Stabilization of solutions to higher-order nonlinear Schrodinger equation with localized damping

Abstract: We study the stabilization of solutions to higher-order nonlinear Schrodinger equations in a bounded interval under the effect of a localized damping mechanism. We use multiplier techniques to obtain exponential decay in time of the solutions of the linear and nonlinear equations.

Abstract: Os projetos brasileiros de avalia o de larga escala do desempenho dos estudantes apresentam descritores para indicar habilidades que os alunos devem desenvolver para modelar problemas da vida real e uma dessas habilidades está relacionada à resolu o de sistemas de equa es. Nesse artigo, é relatada parte de um projeto de pesquisa desenvolvido com calouros de disciplinas matemáticas em universidades privadas do sul do Brasil; uma quest o do teste foi escolhida para aprofundar a análise das resolu es escritas de um sistema de equa es lineares. Depois de classificar as produ es dos alunos, foram utilizadas idéias sobre o sentido do símbolo e sentido da estrutura, para discutir as dificuldades apresentadas. Considera-se que esse tipo de análise permite esclarecer aspectos que devem ser focalizados em outras pesquisas, para ajudar estudantes e professores a compreender alguns problemas apresentados nas avalia es de larga escala. Large-scale assessment projects of students′ performance in Brazil use descriptors to indicate abilities that students should develop in order to deal with real-life modeling problems, and one of these abilities is related to solving systems of equations. In this paper, we report on part of a research project developed with first-year students in mathematics courses enrolled in private universities in southern Brazil; one test question was chosen for an indepth analysis of written solutions to a system of linear equations. After classifying the work of the students, ideas about the meanings of symbol and structure were used to discuss difficulties that arose. It is considered that such an analysis can clarify aspects that must be the focus of future studies to help students and teachers to understand some problems presented in large-scale assessments. Detection of chromosomal regions showing differential gene expression in human skeletal muscle and in alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma

Abstract: A Perl-code web client was developed to automatically obtain genome map positions of large sets of genes. The software, based on automatic search on Human Genome Browser by sequence alignment, only requires availability of a single transcribed sequence for each gene. In this way, we obtained tissue-specific chromosomal maps of genes expressed in rhabdomyosarcoma or skeletal muscle. Subsequently, Perl software was developed to calculate gene density along chromosomes, by using a sliding window. Thirty-three chromosomal regions harbouring genes mostly expressed in rhabdomyosarcoma were identified. Similarly, 48 chromosomal regions were detected including genes possibly related to function of differentiated skeletal muscle, but silenced in rhabdomyosarcoma.In this study we developed a method and the associated software for the comparative analysis of genomic expression in tissues and we identified chromosomal segments showing differential gene expression in human skeletal muscle and in alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, appearing as candidate regions for harbouring genes involved in origin of alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma representing possible targets for drug treatment and/or development of tumor markers.Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common sarcoma of the soft-tissue, the third most common extracranic solid tumor in children [1]. The incidence of RMS is about four new cases per million per year [2]. RMS is believed to arise from regulatory disruption of growth and differentiation of skeletal muscle stem cells [3,4].Several approaches, such as FISH, Comparative Genomic Hybridization (CGH), representational difference analysis [5-7] were proposed to investigate at a genomic level DNA amplification in tumour samples. Microarray technology methods, applied to identification of genome-wide chromosomal imbalances tried to overcome limitations of conventional CGH by hybridizing sample DNA to mapped sequences instead of metaphase chromosomes [8].
