Comparison of vitamin D levels in obese and non obese patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome in a South Indian population

Abstract: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common metabolic abnormality occurring in young women of reproductive age. Low vitamin D levels were found to be associated with the development of obesity and insulin resistance in young women with PCOS. The study was conducted as a prospective observational study involving 121 women with PCOS. The diagnosis of PCOS cases were based on the revised Rotterdam consensus criteria. Vitamin D levels were compared in the obese and non obese PCOS groups and also with the controls. In the PCOS group, sixty subjects were obese with BMI of ≥25 kg/m2 and forty seven subjects were found to be non obese. In the control group, sixteen subjects were obese and sixty five subjects were non obese. The mean vitamin D level in the PCOS group was 15.45±7.88 ng/ml and in the control group was 12.83±5.76ng/ml. The mean vitamin D levels in the obese and non obese group with PCOS were 16.11±8.9ng/ml and 14.61±6.1ng/ml respectively. Majority of the patients and controls had vitamin D deficiency and there was no difference in the vitamin D levels in PCOS group and controls as well as obese and non obese groups. Behaviour of Batter Micropiles Subjected to Vertical and Lateral Loading Conditions  [PDF]

Abstract: Micropiles are drilled and grouted piles having diameter between 100 to 250 mm. Due to its small diameter, it is suitable for low headroom and limited work area conditions. It can be installed without noise nuisance, without vibrations to surrounding soils and structures and without disruption to the production operations in industries which makes micropiles suitable for underpinning and seismic retrofitting of structures. It is necessary to therefore understand the behaviour of micropiles under different loading conditions. This work is on vertical and battered micropiles with different length/diameter ratio (L/D) subjected to vertical and lateral loading conditions. Batter angles had a significant influence on both the vertical and lateral load carrying capacity. The ultimate vertical load was found to increase upto a 30° batter. The ultimate lateral load was found to increase significantly with increasing L/D ratios upto an L/D ratio of 30 for vertical and 48 for battered piles, beyond which the increase was found to be not significant. In general, negative battered micropiles offered more lateral resistance than positive battered micropiles. The results of the study indicated that the ultimate load capacity and mode of failure of the micropiles are a function of the angle of batter, direction of batter and the L/D ratio for vertically and laterally loaded micropiles.
An Investigation into the Adhesion Strength of Diamond Like Carbon Multilayer Coating (DLC/TiN/Ti/Cu/Ni)  [PDF]

Abstract: Advancement in vacuum technologies and vapor deposition processes during last decades has led to the introduction of many modern coatings on metal cutting tools. Even in such an advanced vacuum coating techniques, the failure is not due to the wear of the coating but rather due to the lack of coating adhesion to the substrate. In this work, the coating adhesion test results were performed which is based on the Rockwell indentation tests. This coating adhesion tests were performed as per VDI standards 3198, 1991 for d.c. magnetron sputter deposition of diamond like carbon multilayer coating (DLC / TiN/ Ti / Cu / Ni) on tool substrate. Multilayer coating was deposited on tool substrates at different sputtering parameters/conditions such as power density, partial pressure, substrate temperature and reactive gases. The coated multilayer films were characterized by experimental techniques such as X-ray diffractometer which measures the material deposited, micro Raman spectroscopy and TEM to check DLC, Rockwell indentation to examine adhesion strength, optical profilometer to measure thickness of coating. Ni increases the Cu adhesion on tool substrate. Cu accommodates the shear stress induced by the films / substrate and the mismatch in thermal expansion coefficient, while Ti and TiN promote better DLC bonding. As the target power was increased the adhesion strength, micro hardness and deposition rate were observed to improve. Increase in target power and substrate temperature enhances adhesion strength. Proper substrate preparation and sequence of cleaning processes are the crucial factors for the enhancement of adhesion strength. The sputter deposition conditions for the above mentioned multilayer coatings are identified in this work to get improved quality with particular reference to adhesion and surface finish.
Use of GIS Based Maps for Preliminary Assessment of Subsoil of Guwahati City  [PDF]

Abstract: Guwahati, the major city in the North Eastern region of India is growing rapidly in every aspect with major infrastructures like sports complex, educational institutions, hospitals, flyovers, multiplex halls, etc. Knowledge of the subsurface soil condition is necessary to ensure the structural safety and serviceability of the above mentioned structures before any construction. Therefore, contour maps of Standard penetration test N value, ground water table and shear wave velocity map using Geographical Information System (GIS) platform will be of great help to the foundation designers at the initial stage for site selection and preliminary foundation design under static and seismic condition. Contour maps of Standard penetration test N value at different depth and average contour map of N value of Guwahati city have been prepared. Standard penetration Test N values and depth of water table were taken from a data base of 200 boreholes up to 30 meter depth to prepare N value contour map of Guwahati city. A regression equation between shear wave velocity Vs and Standard penetration test N value based on twenty seven previous similar correlations was also developed. This regression equation was used to determine shear wave velocity of Guwahati city. The average shear wave velocities for 30 m depth for all locations had been determined and used to generate map on (GIS) platform. Other subsurface geotechnical information of Guwahati city like soil classification and depth to water level from ground surface is also presented in the form of GIS based maps in order to form a data base.
Exploring E Turkey: Rainfall Precursor Predicts 100% Earthquake in a Consistent Manner in Just 2 Weeks  [PDF]

Rainfall event is the very specific, reliable unambiguous precursor for the earthquake event. Over the years scientists have hunted for some signal—a precursory sign, however faint—that would allow forecasters to pin-point exactly where and when the big ones will hit. After decades spent searching in vain, many seismologists now doubt whether such a signal even exists. But in a great surprise to everyone, from an ordinary lay man to eminent scientists, 100% earthquakes occur after rainfalls! Though I have the findings for the entire regions of the world, here E Turkey are the region for submission for the period Jan-November, 2012 to study the strong correlation and show the strong evidence to prove that the 100% earthquakes after rainfall in a consistence manner. Anyone can very easily verify the validity of the findings for any forthcoming earthquakes for any regions of E Turkey in just two weeks of period. Nature does not give two different results for the same phenomena, for two different observers. Though there exists a very strong relation between the rainfalls and the earthquakes, scientists and seismologists have not been able to detect and identify this rainfall precursory signal for hundreds of years that consistently occurs before earthquakes. The methodology of rainfall event before earthquakes, even works consistently for earthquake prediction purpose, especially in any regions of the world. Rainfall type precursor is the best approach to predict specific earthquakes, which provide the potential for estimating the epicenter and magnitude of any moderate to strong earthquakes. Earthquakes are more likely when there is rain than it is not. The magnitudes of a resulting individual earthquake depend on the severity of the weather changes. Abstract: In this article I report on a study of the cognitive tools that research mathematicians employ when developing deep understandings of abstract mathematical definitions. I arrived at several conclusions about this process: Examples play a predominant role in understanding definitions. Equivalent reformulations of definitions enrich understanding. Evoked conflicts and their resolutions result in improved understanding. The primary role of definitions in mathematics is in proving theorems. And there are several stages in developing understandings of mathematical definitions (Manin, 2007; Tall & Vinner, 1981; Thurston, 1994). I also include some suggestions for pedagogy that are found in the data.
Case series of eosinophilic meningoencephalitis from South India

Abstract: Eosinophilic meningoencephalitis (EM) is a rare type of meningoencephalitis. The objective of this report is to describe a series of EM identified in a specific geographic area over a short period of time. Materials and Methods: This series of cases are described from a neurological center in Central Kerala occuring in the period between February 2004 and June 2006. Results: During this period we had identified ten patients (eight males and two females) with EM. Their mean age was 37.1 years (range 15-60 years). Main symptomatologies were fever, severe headache, body pain, abdominal pain and arthralgia. One patient was in akinetic rigid state with coma. All patients had peripheral eosinophilia. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of all patients showed eosinophilic pleocytosis. The mean CSF white cell count was 588 cells. CSF differential count showed 50-70% eosinophils. CSF glucose levels were normal but proteins were markedly raised (mean CSF protein was 180 mg/dl). MRI brain showed T2 hyperintensities diffusely in periventricular white matter in the comatose patient. Contrast enhanced CT scan of the brain was normal in others. All eight male patients gave history of eating "raw flesh of Monitor Lizard" (Iguana) some three to fourteen days prior to the onset of symptoms. There was no such history for the female patients. Considering the history of exposure and eosinophilic meningitis we suspected a meningoencephalitis with Angiostrongylus cantonensis and treated them with albendazole, steroid and other supportive measures. All of them recovered. Conclusion: Eosinophilic meningitis (EM) is a rare condition and in this locality, a CNS infection with Agiostrongylus cantonensis is highly likely. AC is a parasite in monitor lizard. Human infection occurs from consumption of uncooked flesh or blood of infected lizards. Physicians need to maintain a high index of suspicion and enquire for any exposure to uncooked meat or blood of monitor lizard when faced with EM. Specific therapy with albendazole offers excellent response.
