Susceptibility and resistance in the genesis of asbestos-related mesothelioma
Bianchi Claudio,Bianchi Tommaso
Indian Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine , 2008,
Abstract: Asbestos is the principal agent in the etiology of malignant mesothelioma. However, a small proportion of people exposed to asbestos develop mesothelioma. This suggests the role of host factors in the genesis of the tumor. A genetic susceptibility is suggested by the occurrence of more mesothelioma cases among blood-related members of a single family. Such an occurrence reached about 4% in a large mesothelioma series. In some studies, mesothelioma patients showed higher prevalences of additional malignancies when compared with controls. This indicates a particular vulnerability to cancer in people with mesothelioma. Not rarely, very old persons heavily exposed to asbestos remain free from asbestos-related cancer, a fact indicating an absolute resistance to the oncogenic effects of asbestos. A relative resistance may be recognized in people severely exposed to asbestos who develop mesothelioma only after 60 years or more since the onset of the exposure. The long survivals, rarely observed among mesothelioma patients, have been attributed to a high efficiency of immune mechanisms. Mesotheliomas have been reported among people with severe immune impairment, such as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome patients or organ transplant recipients. The natural history of mesothelioma shows that a resistance to the oncogenic effects of asbestos does exist. Probably, such a resistance is due to the efficient immune mechanisms. To strengthen the defence mechanisms may represent a way for preventing mesothelioma among people exposed to asbestos.
Malignant pleural mesothelioma in Italy
Bianchi Claudio,Bianchi Tommaso
Indian Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine , 2009,
Abstract: This study reviews a series of 811 malignant pleural mesothelioma cases, diagnosed at hospitals in Trieste and Monfalcone districts of north eastern Italy, a narrow coastal strip with a population of about three lakh, in the period 1968-2008. The diagnosis was based on histological examination in 801 cases, and cytological findings in 10. Necropsy was performed in 610 cases. Occupational histories were obtained directly from the patients or their relatives through personal or telephone interviews. Routine lung sections were examined for asbestos bodies in 500 cases. In 143 cases asbestos bodies were isolated and counted by chemical digestion of the lung tissue using the Smith-Naylor method. The series included 717 men and 94 women aged between 32 and 93 years (mean 69.2 years). Detailed occupational data was obtained for 732 cases. The majority of patients had marine jobs - shipbuilding (449 cases), maritime trades (56 cases), and port activities (39 cases). The nature of work of other patients included a variety of occupations, with non-shipbuilding industries being the most common. Thirty-four women cleaned the work clothes of family members occupationally exposed and hence had a history of asbestos exposure at home. Most of the patients had their first exposure to asbestos before 1960. The latency period ranged between 13 and 73 years (mean 48.2). Latency period among insulators and dock workers were shorter than other categories. Asbestos bodies were detected on routine lung sections in 343 cases (68.6%). Lung asbestos body burdens after isolation ranged between two to 10 millions bodies per gram of dried tissue. Despite some limitations in the use of asbestos in this area since the 1970s, the incidence of tumor remained high during the last years.

On Terms and MHV Amplitudes in Supergravity Vacua of Type II Superstrings
Massimo Bianchi
Advances in High Energy Physics , 2011, DOI: 10.1155/2011/479038
Abstract: We compute one-loop threshold corrections to terms in supergravity vacua of Type II superstrings. We then discuss nonperturbative corrections generated by asymmetric D-brane instantons. Finally we derive generating functions for MHV amplitudes at tree level in supergravities. 1. Introduction supergravities in enjoy many of the remarkable properties of supergravity. Their massless spectra are unique and consist solely of the supergravity multiplets. Their R-symmetries are not anomalous [1]. Regular BH solutions can be found whereby the scalars are stabilized at the horizon by the attractor mechanism (for a recent review see, e.g., [2]). It is thus tempting to conjecture that if pure supergravity turned out to be UV finite [3–7] then supergravities should be so, too. As shown in [8–10], Type II superstrings or M-theory accommodate supergravity in such a way as to include nonperturbative states that correspond to singular BH solutions in . The same is true for supergravities. While the embedding of supergravity corresponds to simple toroidal compactifications, the embedding of supergravities, pioneered by Ferrara and Kounnas in [11] and recently reviewed in [12], requires asymmetric orbifolds [13, 14] or free fermion constructions [15–20]. The inclusion of BPS states, whose possible singular behavior from a strict 4D viewpoint is resolved from a higher-dimensional perspective, generates higher derivative corrections to the low-energy effective action. In particular a celebrated term appears that spoils the continuous noncompact symmetry of “classical” supergravity. Absence of such a term has been recently shown for pure supergravity in [21]. In superstring theory, the term receives contribution at tree level, one loop, and from nonperturbative effects associated to D-instantons [22] and other wrapped branes [23]. Proposals for the relevant modular form of the ? ?U-duality group have been recently put forward in [24–26] that seem to satisfy all the checks. In this paper we consider one-loop threshold corrections to the same kind of terms in superstring models with supersymmetry in and in . After excluding terms ( terms cannot be supersymmetrized on shell when all particles are in the supergravity multiplet [21]), we will derive formulae for the “perturbative” threshold corrections. In we will also discuss other MHV amplitudes (for a recent review see, e.g., [27]) that can be obtained by orbifold techniques from the generating function of supergravity amplitudes [28]. Aim of the analysis is threefold. First, we would like to show that supersymmetric models
Jet quenching at alice
Bianchi,]Nicola;
Nucleus , 2007,
Abstract: rhic results on leading hadron suppression indicate that jets produced in hard processes are strongly quenched by the dense medium created in heavy ion collisions. several questions on the medium modification of the jet structure have not been yet well addressed. these topics will be better studied at lhc by alice at higher pt and with full jet reconstruction. the performances of alice on high pt particles and jets can be significantly improved by completing the present set-up with a large electromagnetic calorimeter.
Uma teoria marxista do político? O debate Bobbio trent'anni doppo
Bianchi, Alvaro;
Lua Nova: Revista de Cultura e Política , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-64452007000100004
Abstract: the debate opened thirty years ago by norberto bobbio with a series of articles published by the mondoperaio magazine raised two challenges to the marxist theory of politics: 1)is there a marxist theory of politics? 2) which are the alternatives to representative democracy? on the one hand, the debate has revealed a high level of consensus on the values and rules of liberal democracy and, on the other hand, the absence among the participants of the debate of a political theory antagonistic to the constitutional-liberal one. this article deals with this debate and develops the hypothesis that only as a negative political theory marxism could be a critique of politics, being consolidated as the theoretical program for the overcoming of the political theory of its age and as the practical program of overcoming politics proper.

Bianchi,Soledad;
Atenea (Concepción) , 2004, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-04622004049000009
Abstract: "la quinta del sordo", a recent exhibit by guillermo nú?ez, suggests the artistic equation art = suffering, art as exorcism and conjuring, art and memory, art and imprint, art as pleasure, art as a mark and art that marks. we are faced with an archeology of pain and fear that sparks the appearance of, for no reason, a nightmare. art that shows the validity of the affirmation of benjamin: "no cultural document exists that is not at the same time a document of barbarism".
Abierta al misterio: la 201 de Luisa Valenzuela
Bianchi,Sandra;
Cuadernos del CILHA , 2011,
Abstract: when perusing luisa valenzuela's broad work, the reader can trace the central lines of the texts, the relationship among them and the differences and similarities between her earlier writings of past decades and her current production. this paper provides an overview of her microfictions, the treatment of temporality and uncertainty, the last one as a trigger mechanism. it also analyses the writing of "serie 201", a set of short texts that displays an ominous treatment in a freudian sense intertwined with traits of the fantastic genre.
Political Science contra a democracia: a forma??o de uma tradi??o
Bianchi, álvaro;
Opini?o Pública , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-62762011000100003
Abstract: the article analyzes the formation years of political science in the united states. the bibliography has highlighted three characteristics that would be the core of an american tradition in this study field: 1) the commitment to the principle of liberalism, 2) the institutionalist approach, and 3) the affirmation of the scientific character of its entrepreneurship. in a still little elaborated way, these haracteristics are present in a "citizen literature" in the end of the 18th century, but they were defined in a more precise way in the process of institutionalization of political science in the second half of the 19th century, and has become the hallmarks of this science in the united states. this research shows how these characteristics have been displayed in the emergence of political science and argues that for its better understanding it is necessary to highlight a forth characteristic: its mistrust democracy and the people.
Miradas al último espejo: La despedida de Fernando Ortiz
Bianchi,Marina;
Olivar , 2011,
Abstract: in his latest book, miradas al último espejo, fernando ortiz remembers people and places of their own existence. he reflects on poetry and emphasizes the importance of tradition. the past lives in words of beauty and emotion, which break the distance between past and present. the soothing power of the verses, sarcasm and irony, relieve resignation over time. the only certainty is life as a journey for the pilgrim. so enjoy the pleasures of this world including undoubtedly love. he conceives the poet's work likes the search for truth. in miradas al último espejo, ortiz provides relief from his poetry, says goodbye and thanks the life in a cervantes way.
