The mammalian fauna from the Central Himalaya, Nepal

Abstract: Nepal harbors unique mammalian fauna, but it is poorly studied at higher elevation. Mammalian fauna were recorded in Manaslu Conservation Area, Dudhkunda and Dudhkoshi valley of Solukhumbu district and Kanchenjunga Conservation Area of Nepal during March 2011 to April 2013 along the trail and the study plots from 700m to 4400m a.s.l. Semi-structured interviews were made with local people to understand their behavior and habitats. Altogether, 29 mammalian fauna were recorded. Five species were recorded new for the areas. Overall, Carnivore species (nine) were encountered more, followed by species of the order Cetartiodactyla (seven). The highest number of mammalian fauna (18) was identified from Manaslu Conservation Area whereas the least (11) from Dudhkunda and Dudhkoshi valley. Human wildlife conflict was frequent with Himalayan Goral (Naemorhedus goral), Barking Deer (Muntiacus vaginalis), Himalayan Tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus), Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta), Nepal Grey Langur (Semnopithecus schistaceus) and Himalayan Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus) for crop depredation in these areas. Although mammalian research started a long time ago, scenario of comprehensive research is not satisfactory in the Central Himalaya, Nepal.

Abstract: Permanent magnet brushless DC motor (PMBLDCM) drives are being employed in many variable speed applications due to their high efficiency, silent operation, compact size, high reliability, ease of control, and low maintenance requirements. These drives have power quality problems and poor power factor at input AC mains as they are mostly fed through diode bridge rectifier based voltage source inverters. To overcome such problems a single-phase single-switch power factor correction AC-DC converter topology based on a Cuk converter is proposed to feed voltage source inverters based PMBLDCM. It focuses on the analysis, design and performance evaluation of the proposed PFC converter topology for a 1.5 kW, 1500 rpm, 400 V PMBLDCM drive used for an air-conditioning system. The proposed PFC converter topology is modelled and its performance is simulated in Matlab-Simulink environment and results show an improved power quality and good power factor in wide speed range of the drive.
Design and Control of Voltage Regulators for a Standalone Power Generation

Abstract: This paper presents various configurations of voltage source converter (VSC) based voltage regulators (VRs) for a stand alone power generation employing an isolated asynchronous generator (IAG). A set of VRs are designed and their performance is simulated using Simulink and Power System Blockset (PSB) -toolboxes to demonstrate their capabilities as a voltage regulator, a harmonic eliminator, a load balancer and a neutral current compensator. It also discusses their merits and demerits, to select a suitable topology of the voltage regulator according to IAG system requirements.

Abstract: Based on the study of PUDWP (Pelakot Udiyachour Drinking Water Project) area of Syangja district the study construed that with access to water, there has been an increase in instances of animal rearing and kitchen gardening. It is saving time of the women due to the installation of tap water supply thus helping women to carry out other activities. For the women of the poor and poorest households, the time saved has helped them to include in livestock raising and agricultural activities and wage labour, thus, contributing to their household economy and women empowerment. Misconceptions In Chemistry At Ixth Grade And Their Remedial Measures

Abstract: The purpose of this work is to study the level of misconceptions among thestudents of class IXth grade about the unit structure of atom and the remedial measuresof these misconceptions. The sample consisted of 189 students. The research has carriedout with two groups' pre test post test control group design during four weeks. Afteradministering entry level test, the experimental group was taught with illustrativematerials, as remedial measure, containing various atomic model and then criterionreferenced test (CRT) was administered on the same unit to collect the data. Pairedsample't' test was used to compare the results obtained from entry level test and CRTusing SPSS-16 software. The results from the post-tests indicated that the students in theexperimental group, taught with the illustrative material, showed a significant decreasein misconception level than the students in the control group. These results show that theimplementation of the new material produced better results in terms of achievement ofthe student.
Formulation and Quality Evaluation of Enriched Balanced Weaning Food at Low Cost

Abstract: Due to wide spread poverty, low income and non-availability of nutritious foods there are rampant of nutritional disorders such as protein energy malnutrition (PEM), anemia, vitamin-A deficiency, iodine deficiency disorder among preschool children in developing countries. Main purpose of the study is to formulate low cost supplementary weaning food from locally available raw materials. Based on the sensory evaluation, formula-I was preferred as a best sample (p<0.05). Chemical analysis of formula-I had been performed and found to be 2.02% moisture, 11.72% crude protein, 20.58% crude fat, 3.11% total ash, 2.69% crude fiber, 59.88% carbohydrate (by difference), 471 Kcal/100 g energy (calculated), 870.15 mg/100g vitamin A (acarotene; calculated), 11.86mg/100g iron, 275mg/100g calcium, 23.55mg/100g ascorbic acid, 35.6μg/100g iodine and 55% water absorbing capacity. Genetic diversity among Indian phytopathogenic isolates of Fusarium semitectum Berkeley and Ravenel  [PDF]

Abstract: We report total ten isolates of F. semitectum recovered from different hosts. Identity of these isolates was determined by morphological and cultural characteristics and confirmed by RAPD-PCR analysis using forty random primers. Morphologically all the ten isolates showed similarity, but based on RAPD-PCR analysis, these isolates can be categorized in three groups depending upon similarity co-efficient. Genetic similarity coefficients between pair wise isolates varied from 0.00 to 1.95 based on an unweighted paired group method of arithmetic average (UPGMA) cluster analysis. RAPD-PCR technique can be used as an important tool for the genetic differentiation among isolates of F. semitectum.
Electronic Load Controller for a Parallel Operated Isolated Asynchronous Generator Feeding Various Loads  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper presents an investigation on a voltage and frequency controller (VFC), which functions as an improved elec-tronic load controller (IELC) for parallel operated isolated asynchronous generators (IAGs) in an autonomous hydro power generation system. In such type of hydro scheme whole generating system is isolated from the grid and supply electricity to the remote communities. The single point operation of these generators is realized, in such a manner that excitation capacitors, speeds, load, voltage, currents of generators remain constant under various operating conditions. The proposed controller consists of a 3-leg IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) based voltage source converter (VSC) and a DC chopper with an auxiliary load at the DC bus of the VSC. The IELC controls the reactive and active powers simultaneously for controlling the voltage and frequency under varying consumer loads. Along with voltage and frequency control through single point operation of IAGs driven by uncontrolled pico hydro turbines, the IELC meets the power quality standard an IEEE-519 and it keeps the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the terminal voltage and currents within the limit of 5%. Here the proposed electrical system along with its controller is modeled in MATLAB along with Simulink and PSB (Power System Block-set) toolboxes. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the capability of proposed controller for an isolated generating system.

Abstract: In this paper, a simple control algorithm for the dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) is proposed to mitigate the power quality problems in terminal voltage such as sag, swell, harmonics, unbalance etc. Two PI (proportional-integral) controllers are used each to regulate the dc bus voltage of DVR and the load terminal voltage respectively. The fundamental component of the terminal voltage is extracted using the synchronous reference frame theory. The control signal for the series connected DVR is obtained indirectly from the extracted reference load terminal voltage. The proposed DVR control strategy is validated through extensive simulation studies using MATLAB software with its Simulink and Sim-power system (SPS) block set tool boxes.
