An Analysis of the Factors Affecting Students’ Adjustment at a University in Zimbabwe
Mutambara Julia,Bhebe Veni
International Education Studies , 2012, DOI: 10.5539/ies.v5n6p244
Abstract: This study provides insight into transition experiences and adjustment of students at a university in Zimbabwe. Research was based on students in the first three semesters of college. Based on prior research college adjustment was conceptualised in this study as involving personal, emotional, social and academic issues. The study was qualitative in nature and the descriptive research design using case study method was used. Structured and unstructured questionnaires were used to gather information. A sample of 115 students was selected using stratified random sampling from the faculty of social sciences. Findings from the study revealed that to a larger extent students were failing to adjust to college demands, this was compounded by the socioeconomic conditions prevailing in Zimbabwe.

Male Voices in Female Bodies: The Case of Chenjerai Hove’s Androcentrism
Bhala Timothy,Kadodo Webster,Bhebe Cordial
English Language and Literature Studies , 2013, DOI: 10.5539/ells.v3n1p47
Abstract: The article is an analysis of Chenjerai Hove’s three novels in English namely Bones (1988), Shadows (1991) and Ancestors (1996). It argues that while Hove, to some extent, attempts to visibilize women in a predominantly male dominated society, he does not do much to suggest that women have the capacity to fully liberate themselves from patriarchal dominance. Hove is more of a pacifier who is not convincing in his quest for the emancipation of the African woman. This conclusion comes from a close analysis of Hove’s depiction of female characters in the three novels mentioned above.
How can mental maps, applied to the coast environment, help in collecting and analyzing spatial representations?

After having been mainly used in urban geography, then cast aside by the geographers, mental maps are now the object of renewed interest, particularly in the field of environmental geography. Applied to the coast, and used as a supplement to the interview, these maps are not only of great assistance in collecting spatial representations, but also helpful in analyzing them. This article uses the example of the integration of mental maps in the scientific poster “Des ingénieurs de plus en plus “verts”. évolution du regard des ingénieurs en charge de la gestion du littoral néerlandais”(Engineers are ‘greener and greener’. Evolution of the thinking of engineers in charge of Dutch coastal management.), prize-winner of the competition organized by the Paris Doctoral School of Geography Forum in 2011.

Combination Studies of Oreganum Vulgare Extract Fractions and Volatile Oil along with Ciprofloxacin and Fluconazole against Common Fish Pathogens

Advanced Pharmaceutical Bulletin , 2013,
Abstract: Purpose: The study is aimed at finding new antibiotic therapy for aquaculture due to potential of bacteria to develop resistance to the existing therapies. Use of large quantities of synthetic antibiotics in aquaculture thus has the potential to be detrimental to fish health, to the environment and wildlife and to human health. Methods: Antimicrobial potential of volatile oil and fractions of chloroform extract of Oreganum vulgare was evaluated alone and in the presence of standard antimicrobials against common fish pathogens by disc-diffusion, agar well assay and two fold microdilution method by nanodrop spectrophotometric method. Results: The best results were represented by volatile oil followed by phenolic fraction by disc-diffusion, agar well and microdilution assays (Minimum inhibitory concentration). By the interaction studies, it was observed that the volatile oil and phenolic fraction were able to inhibit the pathogens at very low concentration compared to standard drugs. The fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) was calculated and volatile oil and phenolic fractions were found to be synergistic against Pseudomonas fluorescens and Candida albicans. Conclusion: The experimental data suggests the use of volatile oil and phenolic fraction in combination with standard antimicrobials to maintain healthy aquaculture with lesser adverse effects as compared to synthetic antibiotic therapy.
Measures for classification and detection in steganalysis

Computer Science , 2009,
Abstract: Still and multi-media images are subject to transformations for compression, steganographic embedding and digital watermarking. In a major program of activities we are engaged in the modeling, design and analysis of digital content. Statistical and pattern classification techniques should be combined with understanding of run length, transform coding techniques, and also encryption techniques.
Diversity in Ranking using Negative Reinforcement
Rama Badrinath,C. E. Veni Madhavan
Computer Science , 2012,
Abstract: In this paper, we consider the problem of diversity in ranking of the nodes in a graph. The task is to pick the top-k nodes in the graph which are both 'central' and 'diverse'. Many graph-based models of NLP like text summarization, opinion summarization involve the concept of diversity in generating the summaries. We develop a novel method which works in an iterative fashion based on random walks to achieve diversity. Specifically, we use negative reinforcement as a main tool to introduce diversity in the Personalized PageRank framework. Experiments on two benchmark datasets show that our algorithm is competitive to the existing methods.
Evaluation of the influence of base and alkyl bromide on synthesis of pyrazinoic acid esters through fatorial design
Fernandes, Jo?o Paulo dos Santos;Felli, Veni Maria Andres;
Química Nova , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-40422009000900040
Abstract: pyrazinoic acid esters have been synthesized as prodrugs of pyrazinoic acid. in the literature, its preparation is reported through the reaction of pyrazinoyl chloride with alcohols and the reaction with dcc/dmap. in this work, it is reported a 22 factorial design to evaluate the preparation of these esters through the substitution of alkyl bromides with carboxylate anion. the controlled factors were alkyl chain length of bromides (ethyl and hexyl) and the used base (triethylamine and dbu). results revealed that the used base used has significant effect on yield, and alkyl bromide used has neither significant influence, nor its interaction effect with base.
