Estudos Avan?ados , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142012000300007
Abstract: the essay examines the relationship between translation and re-creation, focusing on the differences and similarities between primary creation, i.e., the construction of a work by its author, and translation as secondary creation, i.e., the new form taken on by the original in the target language, acquiring a new existence and gaining independence. it also analyzes the contribution of mikhail bakhtin's literary theory, as well as the contribution of other great masters, to an eventual theory of translation.

Boletim do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Ciências Humanas , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1981-81222011000100005
Abstract: the paper address the preliminary results of the public archaeology project that is being conducted by the author at joanes, a small fishermen village in marajo island, state of pará, brazil, considering the ruins of an historic site assigned to a religious mission from the late xviith century. the reflections about the local communities' perceptions of the site highlight the underlying logic of collecting artifacts - a local common practice - and the subsequent organization of small 'domestic collections'. i argue that collecting in these contexts should not be regarded as looting or destruction, but as a singular form of heritage and past appropriation. i believe this discussion will contribute to the understanding of the relationship between small scale communities and the archaeological heritage in brazilian amazon.
Gêneros digitais: Apresentando livros na Internet
Bezerra,Benedito;
Revista signos , 2010, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-09342010000300004
Abstract: this paper explores, from a socio-rhetorical perspective, the introductory text genres found in the introduction of digital academic books, considering both their transmutation from the printed to a virtual medium and the subsequent changes in the meaning they take on in this new medium. the purposes of this research was twofold: to map on the websites of several publishing houses the occurrence of genres, such as forewords and book blurbs linked to academic books, and to analyze the peculiar aspects they assume in the new rhetorical context. fifty instances of such genres in books on linguistics were selected, and they were analyzed following swales's (1990) socio-rhetorical model. findings show a high frequency of the book blurb, among others, and a considerable number of changes when web-mediated. multimodality is one of the most distinctive features they acquire in the new media. the role of the media in the occurrence of mixed communicative purposes, combining academic and promotional interests, is also prominent.

Forests have a unique and often contradictory situation in the international sphere. A crosscutting theme, inherent to the main current environmental and social discussions, there is no clearly cut and defined law for forestry. The situation of the theme at Rio+20 was also contradictory, since despite the fact that forestry issues were included in the matters under discussion, they were not part of the official agenda. However, the timing of changes experienced in Brazil contributed to the fact that the theme, in particular the Amazon rainforest, was thoroughly discussed at parallel events. Four issues dominated the debate: the construction of the Belo Monte dam, deforestation, conservation units and the forestry code, highlighting the central role of the Amazon not only in Brazil, but also in the international community. The aim of this article is to present an analysis of this unique quality of forests in the international environmental agenda and the role of the Amazon at the United Nations meeting.
SIGNIFYING HERITAGE IN AMAZON: A PUBLIC ARCHAEOLOGY PROJECT AT VILA DE JOANES, MARAJó ISLAND, BRAZIL LOS SENTIDOS DE PATRIMONIO EN LA AMAZONIA: UN PROYECTO DEARQUEOLOGíA PúBLICA EN VILA DE JOANES, ISLA DE MARAJó, BRASIL
Marcia Bezerra
Chungará (Arica) - Revista de Antropología Chilena , 2012,
Abstract: The paper summarizes the initial results of a public archaeology project undertaken at Vila de Joanes, a fishing village in the Amazon, on Marajó Island, where I conducted research with a site that was a religious mission from the XVII century. By reflecting about the local communities’ ideas about the site I explore the underlying logic of collecting artifacts -a local practice- and the subsequent organization of "small collections," arguing that collecting in this context should not be considered "destruction" but rather as a particular form of heritage appropriation. By exercising such reflections the study aims to better understand the relationship between small scale communities and archaeological patrimony in the Amazon as well as to aid in the development of distinct public policies which are appropriate for local preservation.

Journal of Geographic Information System (JGIS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jgis.2013.55043
Abstract: Heliothermic electricity generation is gaining popularity in several countries worldwide. In Brazil, this form of energy generation has not yet been explored for large scale projects. However, the country possesses extensive areas with normal and high-intensity direct irradiation and low seasonality factors, particularly in the semi-arid region of the Brazilian Northeast. The region also presents other important features for setting up such plants: proximity to transmission lines, sufficient flatness, non-endangered vegetation, a suitable land use profile low maximum wind speeds, low population density, and more recently, an increase in the demand for local electric energy due to economic growth above the Brazilian average. A Geographic Information System includes a set of specialised resources that allow us to manipulate spatial data, providing quickness and efficiency in the identification of appropriate places for installing solar power plants while also preparing us for future scenarios, with regards to their impacts, costs and benefits. This article presents a study of the optimal location for thermoelectric power plants in the semi-arid region of the Brazilian Northeast on the scale of 1:10,000,000. All provinces with good potential for the implementation of large-scale concentrating solar power plants are identified. Considering that the installed capacity for parabolic cylindrical concentrators in terrains with a steepness of less than 1% is 43.26 MW/km2 for systems without storage and 30.82 MW/km2 for systems with 6 hours of storage, the potential of the southeast region of Piauí alone is huge. Even with the lack of information about the urban areas, terrain continuity, and other variables,utilising only 10% of the identified potential area, or879.7 km2, would result in an installed capacity of 38.1-27.1 GW. This value corresponds to more than 1/3 of the potency of the current Brazilian electric system. If the same calculation is made for the semi-arid region of the Brazilian Northeast, its capacity will be greater than 1000 GW.
Actual Evapotranspiration Estimation Using Remote Sensing: Comparison of SEBAL and SSEB Approaches  [PDF]
Bergson G. Bezerra, Bernardo B. da Silva, Carlos A. C. dos Santos, José R. C. Bezerra
Advances in Remote Sensing (ARS) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ars.2015.43019
Abstract: The main objective of this paper was to evaluate the daily actual evapotranspiration (ET) accuracy obtained by remote sensing algorithms when compared with Bowen ratio measurements performed in the cotton fields. The experiment was conducted in a cotton experimental field of EMBRAPA located in Ceará State, Brazil. Seven TM Landsat-5 images acquired in 2005 and 2008 were used to perform SEBAL and SSEB algorithms. The comparison between the estimated values by remoting sensing algorithms and the measured values in situ showed an acceptable accuracy. Besides, SSEB algorithm showed to be an important tool for ET analysis in the semi-arid regions, due to the fact that it does not need the meteorological data to solve the energy balance, but only the average temperature of the “hot” and “cold” pixels. Additionally, SSEB presents simpler processing than SEBAL algorithm that needs to solve an iterative process to obtain the sensible heat flux values.
Carvalho, Alonso Bezerra de;
Educa??o e Pesquisa , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-97022010000200011
Abstract: this article has a theoretical character and presents some of weber's ideas, with emphasis on those that can supply elements to reflect on the current state of education, more particularly based on his understanding of modernity. disenchantment of the world is the key concept in his sociology, and is taken as the basis for a reflection about the meaning that science and the teacher can have today. a classic author, weber's interpretation of the modern world brings to our consideration a variety of themes that influence markedly the thinking and practice of contemporary culture by its concern with understanding human actions and values. by studying the western process of rationalization, he initiates debates in science, in ethics and, correspondingly, in education, allowing us to expand our comprehension of the meaning, significance, and role of our actions towards knowledge and teaching. the main object of education is to offer students contents that stimulate the freedom of thought. for that, the teacher needs to adopt a non-partisan ethics in the classroom, presenting contents unbiased by her/his political opinions and, if failing to do so, having the honesty to explain what she/he is doing. it is therefore of the utmost importance that the teacher should keep a "neutral" position, so that in and out of the classroom the students may reflect and question what they see, experiment and decide upon. only then the conduct of the teacher will be consistent with the process of rationalization of our culture.
