Abstract: O cord o umbilical age como um elo de liga o entre a placenta e o embri o durante a gesta o e pode ser necessário anos após o nascimento. As células-tronco do sangue de cord o umbilical e placentário possibilitam ser utilizadas como alternativa em transplantes, substituindo os métodos convencionais que empregam células tronco originárias da medula óssea,no tratamento de doen as hematológicas e oncológicas. Este artigo apresenta as regulamenta es atuais sobre os bancos de armazenamento do sangue de cord o umbilical e placentário no cenário brasileiro. Para fins comparativos, s o apresentados as regulamenta es e modelos específicos de dois bancos de armazenamento internacionais. O uso potencial do sangue de cord o umbilical e placentário, como por exemplo, nas pesquisas relacionadas à medicina regenerativa, é descrito e pode levar a um novo questionamento do modelo atual de armazenamento, envolvendo discuss es técnicas, legais e éticas.
Cars as a Diffuse Network of Road-Environment Monitoring Nodes  [PDF]

Abstract: The present paper aims to describe the conceptual idea to use cars as sensors to measure and acquire data related road environment. The parameters are collected using only standard equipment commonly installed and operative on commercial cars. Real sensors and car sub-systems (e.g. thermometers, accelerometers, ABS, ESP, and GPS) together with other “implicit” sensors (e.g. fog lights, windscreen wipers) acquire and contain information. They are shared inside an in-vehicle communication network using mainly the standard CAN bus and can be collected by a simple central node. This node can also be available on the market without too expensive costs thanks to some companies which business is devoted to car fleet monitoring. All the collected data are then geolocalized using a standard GPS receiver and sent to a remote elaboration unit, exploiting mobile network technologies such as GPRS or UMTS. A large number of cars, connected together in a diffuse Wireless Sensor Network, allow the elaboration unit to realize some info-layers put at the disposal of a car driver. Traffic, state of the road and other information about the weather can be received by car drivers using an ad hoc developed mobile application for smartphone which can give punctual information related to a specific route, previously set on the mobile phone navigator. The description of some experimental activities is presented, some technical points will be addressed and some examples of applications of the network of cars “as sensors” will be given.
Recharging RFID Tags for Environmental Monitoring Using UAVs: A Feasibility Analysis  [PDF]

Abstract: RFID tags are used for different purposes. One of the major problems to be addressed, particularly for monitoring purposes, is their limited power autonomy. Tags must perform different tasks with limited power consumption and their batteries capacities are often too low, even if low power consumption techniques are implemented. In these operational situations tags should be kept in operation for long periods of time and the common solution is to go directly where they are installed and recharge them manually or change their batteries; alternatively, when possible, small photovoltaic (PV) panels may be adopted. This paper proposes a feasibility analysis of how it is possible to recharge a multipurpose RFID tag using a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), which is programmed to go above the tags and recharge them. This possibility is analyzed from an energetic point of view assuming to recharge a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) using a common commercial UAV adequately instrumented using the wireless power transfer technique.

Abstract: objective: to estimate the prevalence of the practice of leisure-time physical activity in older adults and to analyze its association with environment perception. methods: cross-sectional population study conducted from september 2009 to june 2010 with 1.656 individuals aged 60 years or older, living in the urban zone of the city of florianópolis, southern brazil. leisure-time physical activity was measured using the long version of the international physical activity questionnaire. environment perception variables were measured by means of a modified version of the neighborhood environment walkability scale. crude and adjusted analyzes were carried out using poisson regression with a 5% significance level. results: the prevalence of leisure-time physical activity was 29.7% (95% ci: 26.0; 33.3); 35.6% (95%ci: 29.7; 41.6) among men and 26.3% (95%ci: 23.1; 29.4) among women. the elderly who reported the existence of sidewalks, bike lanes, pedestrian paths and trails in the neighborhood, as well as those who reported receiving support from friends or neighbors to engage in physical activities, were more active in their leisure time. concerning the influence of the climate, the elderly who reported that it was a barrier were rated as more active. conclusions: the practice of leisure-time physical activity still has low prevalence among the elderly population of florianópolis. public spaces for the practice of physical activity and encouraging group activities may play a significant role in the promotion of leisure-time physical activity in older adults.
Extreme Rainfall Event Analysis Using Rain Gauges in a Variety of Geographical Situations  [PDF]

Abstract: About 30 years of measurements made by the rain gauges located in Piedmont (Italy) have been analyzed. Rain gauges have been divided into 4 datasets considering the complex orography near Turin, namely the flatlands, mountains, hills and urban areas. For each group of gauges, the Generalized Extreme Values (GEV) distributions are estimated considering both the entire dataset of available data and different sets of 3 years of data in running mode. It is shown that the GEV estimated parameters temporal series for the 3 years dataset do not present any specific trend over the entire period. The study presented here is preliminary to a future extreme rainfall event analysis using high temporal and spatial resolution X-band weather radar with a limited temporal availability of radar maps covering the same area.
Hail Sensing Probes: Feasibility Analysis for Probes to Monitor and Study Hail  [PDF]

Abstract: This work presents the feasibility study regarding the realization of hail sensing probes for remote sensing and study of hail. The probes are designed as artificial hailstones in order to study both the physical properties of the portion of atmosphere where the formation of hail occurs and the modification of atmospheric conditions while the hailstones are falling to the ground. The basic idea is to realize sensors with a similar fluid-dynamic behavior with respect to hailstones; the density, the weight and the size of the probes are determined. Consequently, the specification of the electronic boards, sensors, and material to realize the probes are studied and presented. The hail sensing probes can be dropped by a plane, or potentially a UAV (Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle), which fly above and through the clouds where the hail formation occurs. During their falling to the ground, the sensors installed on the probe measure directly different parameters such as humidity, temperature, pressure, acceleration. All data are sent to a receiver located on the ground. The study of the sampling frequency of each sensor is presented, together with the analysis of the propagation channel, in order to assure a robust communication link between probes and the ground receiver. The energy balance is also computed. The work demonstrates that a set of this kind of disposable sensors can be realized. They can be used for efficient monitoring operations and studies of hail formation dynamics and conditions, thus increasing the set of instruments for the monitoring and remote sensing of hail.

Abstract: in two apparently homogeneous areas of oxisol, soil samples both from the surface (0-30 cm) and from the subsurface (80-120 cm) were collected in each of the areas, following a 50 m grid pattern. each soil sample was analised in order to be classified and to be verified under the soil survey point of view the distribution of the mapring units as well as their frequency of occurence with diminishing degree of generalization of the taxonomic classes according to the american soil classification system of 1970. the results obtained for both areas led to the following conclusions: a) morphological characteristics were found to be very homogeneous for surface and subsurface samples. excluding the petroferric contact and the soil depth in area-2, the morphological characteristics were unsuitable to differentiate classes in both areas. b) the classification of the soils in the great group level based on field observation alone was found to be not suitable as the differentiation of the units oxisols depends on the analytical characteristics, and it was not possible, in these areas to relate the morphology with the analytical data. c) the categories of family for area-1 and subgroup for area-2 were considered the more adequate for the semi-detailed level of soil survey and the scale of publication of the map of 1:50,000.

Physical activity: a perspective of health promotion among the elderly in Florianopolis county

Abstract: A pesquisa teve como objetivos verificar a rela o entre o nível de atividade física e as condi es de vida e saúde dos idosos residentes em Florianópolis,SC e propor diretrizes para programas e a es públicas de atividades físicas voltadas à popula o idosa. A amostra, do tipo probabilística com sele o aleatória estratificada por setor censitário, distrito e sexo, totalizou 875 idosos, com média de idade de 71,6 anos (dp=7,9). Os dados foram colhidos por IPAQ (Questionário Internacional de Atividades Físicas) e analisados, associados aos da pesquisa de Perfil dos Idosos de Florianópolis, SC, obtidos por BOAS (Brazilian Old Age Schedule). Incluem dados complementares aqueles obtidos em programas de idosos de municípios europeus e aqueles relativos aos servi os existentes em Florianópolis. A análise pela Associa o de Correspondência Múltipla considerou as variáveis de condi o de vida e saúde e variável atividade física(AF) semanal em dois níveis: idosos menos ativos (menos de 150 minutos); idosos mais ativos (150 minutos ou mais). Resultados: 59,3% eram os idosos mais ativos, sendo os homens mais ativos no domínio do lazer, enquanto as mulheres, nas tarefas domésticas. A maioria residia com o c njuge e em 18,3% deles ainda trabalhavam. A situa o econ mica atual, segundo a maioria, era melhor do que quando tinham 50 anos de idade e 36,9% diziam o que ganhavam dava na conta certa para suas necessidades básicas. Os mais ativos relataram estar mais satisfeitos com a vida. Quanto à percep o de sua saúde, consideravam boa ou ótima, embora 71,1% relatassem problemas de saúde, 73,0% usavam medicamentos, 77,5%, óculos e 71,1%, próteses. Entre Atividades da Vida Diária e Saúde Mental (indicadores de demência e depress o), a associa o foi evidente entre os mais ativos sendo mais independentes e tendo menos indicadores negativos de saúde mental. A utiliza o dos recursos sociais disponíveis recaiu principalmente nas atividades de lazer em 18,5%, seguida de participa o em grupo de convivência em 12,1%, sendo mais utilizados pelos idosos mais ativos. As necessidades e problemas que mais os afetavam, segundo suas percep es eram: econ micos, de saúde e de seguran a. Em cinco programas de AF para idosos observados em municípios europeus, o comprometimento do governo local era presente no desenvolvimento desses programas na aten o às necessidades da popula o idosa em diversas áreas. A Wireless Sensor Network Ad-Hoc Designed as Anti-Theft Alarm System for Photovoltaic Panels  [PDF]

Abstract: Photovoltaic (PV) systems have attracted increasing attention in last years as well as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), which have been used in many application fields. In PV plants, especially in ground installations, a lot of thefts and damages occur due to the still high cost of the modules. A new experimental WSN ad-hoc has been designed to be an anti-theft alarm system. Each node of the network is directly installed under each PV string and it is equipped with an accelerometer sensor capable to detect a minimum displacement of the panel from its steady position. The WSN presents a star topology: a master node cyclically interrogates the slave nodes through RF link. It collects all the nodes responses and communicates though a RS-232 interface with a control PC checking the network status. When a slave node detects an alarm, continuous messages are sent to the control PC which turns on all the alarm signaling systems. The control PC is equipped with an open source operative system and software and provides for SMS, e-mail and sound-light signaling in case of alarm. It also communicates with a remote server where all the WSN information is stored. A first low cost experimental WSN has been already installed and it is working properly.
