Polio in Italy
Fantini,Bernardino;
Dynamis , 2012,
Abstract: the history of polio in italy is relatively short because the particular social and demographic history of the country has actually compressed the most dramatic history of the polio epidemic into only 40 years, from the first severe epidemic just before world war ii to the early 1980s, when the epidemic vanished thanks to an effective and country-wide vaccination campaign. the epidemic, however, had a formidable impact on medicine, public health, social attitudes and culture. an analysis of this case study can illustrate the impact of an epidemic of a severe disease on individual and collective life, and at the same time the efficacy of public health measures against it, and the importance of the social structure, state and private, in coping with the consequences of the epidemics. in this period, the attitude towards the handicapped changed from stigma and isolation to social integration, thanks especially to the changes in health legislation, social action and the initiatives of the patient' associations.
Arte e tecnologia: intersec??es
Bernardino, Paulo;
ARS (S?o Paulo) , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-53202010000200004
Abstract: being technologies always present throughout the art history, which is mainly constituted by images, we will try to understand in which extent digital technology, considered to us as a main structure in the way the viewer faces creative production, interferes with the artistic procedures. we will centre our attention in new formulations according to positioning of the author and the observer. the result of the intersection between technology and interactivity drives us to perceive the development of the idea of shared production that spreads out as will inherent to the attitude of the creative act. the work, on being revealed in the aspiration of interactivity enounces a positioning that is linked to the technological means, on space and proceedings issues. in the art studies, it is further growing the importance of a quest for a neutral, universal guide line, in order to assimilate an ideological component the reveals itself in the attitude inherent to the use of these new digital technologies. we will try to understand how is the meaning of the images coordinated, and why do we need and seek for images. to finish we will endeavor to the proceedings of the viewer before the digital innovations, in order to understand in which way the interaction affects the positioning of the subject in relation to aspectos of creativity.
A??o afirmativa e a rediscuss?o do mito da democracia racial no Brasil
Bernardino, Joaze;
Estudos Afro-Asiáticos , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-546X2002000200002
Abstract: this article discusses the meaning of the affirmative action proposals in the brazilian racial relations context, which is marked by the popular belief in the racial democracy myth, as well as in the ideal of whitening. as a consequence of both beliefs, there is on one hand, a difficulty toward a positive self-classification, and on the other, a negative alter-classification of who is negro in brazil. by using interviews with negro militants, we come to a conclusion that the above-mentioned proposals besides minimizing the racial inequality, try to redefine the brazilian model of social relations revalorizing the negro identity. to fulfill this wish, it is required to develop a sense of belonging to a racial group, as well as a self and a alter positive recognize of who is negro in brazil. starting from this, it would be possible to re-discuss and even overcome the racial democracy myth.
Pinera,Bernardino;
Revista médica de Chile , 2007, DOI: 10.4067/S0034-98872007000600017
Abstract: in this article, the author -a bishop of the catholic church-discusses the similarities and differences between two sets of ethical values that may guide the behaviour of medical professionals towards their patients and society. one set derives from biblical principles contained in the old and new testaments, mainly represented by the ten commandments and christ's prayer from the mountain. these principles are shared by all christian nominations and by the jewish and muslim religions. the second one, although intrinsically agnostic, is also focused in the human individual and the human society. both streams obey a "natural morality" common to all humans: every individual should respect each one's conscience, should avoid doing to others what each one would not ?ike to receive, to do not lie, kill or rob, to obey the rules of family and society. the biblical ethics stresses the value of responsibility in human behaviour while modern ethics sets the point in authenticity. in spite of their differences, the sharing of crucial points and end goals should inspire medical professionals regardless their religious beliefs to follow a common set of ethical values and to remain united in pursuing it
Bernardino Ragni
Hystrix : the Italian Journal of Mammalogy , 2003, DOI: 10.4404/hystrix-14.0-4219
Congenital anophthalmia: A review of dealing with volume
Bernardino Robert
Middle East African Journal of Ophthalmology , 2010,
Abstract: Background : Anophthalmia in childhood whether congenital or acquired is not just a question of cosmesis. Loss of an eye can effect the maturation of the soft tissues and bony structure surrounding the affected orbit. Therefore, a comprehensive approach including medical and surgical interventions is required to rehabilitate a child early in life. Materials and Methods : A literature survey of the past 40 years on the topic of congenital anophthalmia with focus on medical and surgical volume augmentation of the orbit was conducted. Results : Newer technologies including hydrogel implants and saline-filled tissue expanders have allowed for more rapid expansion of the pediatric orbit often with minimally invasive surgical procedures. However, traditional approaches including conformer therapy are still the primary intervention in these complicated cases. Conclusion : Anophthalmia in childhood requires a close interaction between ophthalmologist and ocularist as well as a motivated patient and family. With early intervention a good cosmetic outcome with periocular symmetry is obtainable.

A numerical approach to harmonic non-commutative spectral field theory
Bernardino Spisso
Physics , 2011,
Abstract: The object of this work is the numerical investigation of a non-commutative field theory defined via the spectral action principle. The Starting point is a spectral triple (A,H,D) referred to as harmonic. The construction of these data relies on an 8-dimensional Clifford algebra. The spectral action is computed for the product of the triple (A,H,D) with a matrix-valued spectral triple. Renormalization theory associates to the spectral action a probability measure. Its associated correlation functions define then a field theory. In the perturbative approach this measure is constructed as a formal power series. This requires explicit knowledge of the solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations. For the model under consideration, it turns out impossible to obtain these solutions. An alternative approach consists in a discretization of all variables and a numerical investigation of the behavior of the correlation functions when the discretization becomes finer. Despite the complexity of the approximated spectral action, some reliable numerical results are obtained, showing that a numerical treatment of this kind of models in the Moyal matrix basis is possible.
Soares, Ivanete Bernardino;
Machado de Assis em Linha , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1983-68212012000200009
Abstract: in this article, we seek to show some aspects of machado de assis's method of composition, which enabled him to subtly criticize the society of his time. in order to do so, we analyze the discourse techniques he used in a specific series of chronicles, bons dias!, published at the end of the 19th century in the newspaper gazeta de notícias do rio de janeiro. among the resources observed, we highlight the personification process of several social types the narrator-chronist creates, which is able to amount to sophisticated caricatures of the society at that time.
