Alterations of specific biomarkers of metabolic pathways in vascular tree from patients with Type 2 diabetes

Abstract: The atherosclerotic process in OPA from diabetic patients was associated with high expression levels of inflammatory, lipid metabolism and apoptotic biomarkers. The degree of glycemic control was associated with gene expression markers of apoptosis, lipid metabolism and antioxidants in FV. However, the effect of glycemic control on pro-atherosclerotic gene expression was very low in arteries with established atherosclerosis.Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are highly prevalent in the general population, affecting most adults over 60?years of age. Vascular endothelium has unique responses to hemodynamic forces. The flow and hemodynamic forces are not uniform in the vascular system. The endothelium of the vascular circulation is exposed to hemodynamic forces of greater magnitude than in other human tissues. Hemodynamic forces play an important role in vascular diseases, especially in the location of atheromas [1].The pathophysiology of arterial thrombosis is different from that of venous thrombosis. In the arteries there is altered endothelium-platelet adhesion, greatly influenced by hemodynamic forces, while the major factors for venous thrombosis are the phenomena of slow or stagnant blood flow, combined with hypercoagulability situations [2].Sustained flow with high shear stress upregulates gene and then protein expression in endothelial cells, which has a protective effect against the atherosclerotic process [3]. In the venous system, a disturbed flow leads to inflammation and venous thrombosis, and therefore the development of chronic vessel disease, such as peripheral arterial disease.Atherosclerosis is associated with processes such as inflammation [4] lipid metabolism [5], apoptosis [6] and the immune system responses [5]. Epidemiologic studies show a consistent association between diabetes and cardiovascular disease [7]. Abstract: Introduction Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease, or histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis, is a rare, benign, autoimmune condition characterized by lymphadenopathy, fever and neutropenia. It is a self-limited condition of unknown etiology. Case presentation We report the case of a 45-year-old Caucasian man with the first known case of Kikuchi disease associated with dramatic weight loss after bariatric surgery. Conclusion Although the association between Kikuchi disease and bariatric surgery may be entirely coincidental, we speculate whether the immune dysfunction associated with weight loss may have played an etiologic role in this process.
Progression from High Insulin Resistance to Type 2 Diabetes Does Not Entail Additional Visceral Adipose Tissue Inflammation

Abstract: Obesity is associated with a low-grade chronic inflammation state. As a consequence, adipose tissue expresses pro-inflammatory cytokines that propagate inflammatory responses systemically elsewhere, promoting whole-body insulin resistance and consequential islet β-cell exhaustation. Thus, insulin resistance is considered the early stage of type 2 diabetes. However, there is evidence of obese individuals that never develop diabetes indicating that the mechanisms governing the association between the increase of inflammatory factors and type 2 diabetes are much more complex and deserve further investigation. We studied for the first time the differences in insulin signalling and inflammatory pathways in blood and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) of 20 lean healthy donors and 40 equal morbidly obese (MO) patients classified in high insulin resistance (high IR) degree and diabetes state. We studied the changes in proinflammatory markers and lipid content from serum; macrophage infiltration, mRNA expression of inflammatory cytokines and transcription factors, activation of kinases involved in inflammation and expression of insulin signalling molecules in VAT. VAT comparison of these experimental groups revealed that type 2 diabetic-MO subjects exhibit the same pro-inflammatory profile than the high IR-MO patients, characterized by elevated levels of IL-1β, IL-6, TNFα, JNK1/2, ERK1/2, STAT3 and NFκB. Our work rules out the assumption that the inflammation should be increased in obese people with type 2 diabetes compared to high IR obese. These findings indicate that some mechanisms, other than systemic and VAT inflammation must be involved in the development of type 2 diabetes in obesity.

Abstract: the lenga state forests of tierra del fuego, argentina, historically have sustained most of the province forest industries. these forests generally were used without appropriate silvicultural criteria and with a harvesting rate that possibly will finish the fiscal reserves of old growth productive forest in the short term. in order to avoid this situation towards a sustainable management, it's necessary to reduce the annual rate of harvesting, to implement silvicultural criteria, to perform a stronger state control and to evaluate the incorporation of harvested areas that have recovered their productivity, defining specific management criteria for these forests. for this last point it's necessary to know the initial characteristics of the stands and the harvesting characteristics. in order to construct a tool that offers basic information for specific decision making at stand level, data of 973 trees (d, dh, h) were collected, distributed in 60 sites throughout the fagnano lake basin. predicting models of d, based on the other two variables, were adjusted using the stepwise method. given the found heterocedasticity, the procedure was repeated with logaritmized variables. model (r2= 0,971; eee = 0,0324) was choose. this tool will be useful both to determine the original structure of the forest and to find out the harvesting characteristics. the use of variables such us stump diameter and height, and stand related variables such us site quality and structure is discussed.
Cortas de selección en grupo en bosques de lenga de Tierra del Fuego

Abstract: in order to characterize the group selection system on lenga (nothofagus pumilio) forests in tierra del fuego (argentina), three trials were located in the fagnano lake basin. the cutting criteria were: to generate gaps (initiation cuts); to liberate saplings (liberation cuts) and to promote the growth of young well formed poles (conduction cuts). these criteria were adjusted to economic aims, felling mainly individuals with useful logs, and the cut was complemented with the felling or ringing of individuals of low lumber production aptitude. there were conservation aims too: trees bigger than 80 cm bhd were preserved, the boundaries of peats were protected and the cut on high slopes was avoided. the diameter of gaps remained lower than the height of dominant trees, and special attention was paid to avoid the coalescence between gaps. the cut remain lower than 30 % of the stand ba. though the trials were realized in similar structures, there were differences up to 100 % in the available volume of merchantable logs obtained in each of them. this fact was reflected in the amount of opened gaps per hectare, but not in its size. the trial with the most intense cut (28 % of the ba) produced the double of merchantable wood that the other two. this wood comes mainly from conduction cuts. the average relationship between merchantable and non merchantable (ring-shaped) trees was 4 to 1.

Abstract: the procedure used by the state forest service of the chubut province (argentina) is changing in lenga forests, and a group selection system has been adopted to promote natural regeneration. the objective of this work is to gather information on the behavior of regeneration at different stages of the application of group selection cuttings. thus, an analysis of regeneration establishment and development in a lenga forest, managed through group selection cuttings, was carried out. regeneration was analyzed in three aspects: (a) a situation similar to that before the first cut; (b) regeneration in gaps formed 40 years ago (by the first cut); and (c) the harvest effects on regeneration produced by gap enlargement during the second cut. the results suggest that the group selection system in the analyzed forest allows for the successful establishment of natural regeneration, which was observed in a high percentage of sample plots throughout the forest. there was also a favorable reaction to gap opening, and damage to the regeneration resulting from harvest operations was within acceptable limits.

Abstract: El uso de enzimas a nivel industrial es económicamente viable si éstos son estables bajo las condiciones del proceso y pueden ser reutilizados, lo cual puede lograrse mediante inmovilización en un soporte apropiado. Materiales inorgánicos porosos como las sílicas son buenos candidatos como soporte ya que presentan alta resistencia mecánica y térmica, facilitan el flujo y son biodegradables. Se muestra la eficiencia de sílica con porosidad controlada como soporte para inmovilización de lactasa. Este material es sintetizado partiendo de fuente de sílica barata, en presencia de surfactante catiónico y acetato de etilo que permiten modular el tama o de poro.

Abstract: Actualmente la administración forestal de la provincia de Chubut (Argentina) tiende a reemplazar el floreo por el método de cortas de selección en grupos, promoviendo el establecimiento de unidades de regeneración en claros. El objetivo de este trabajo fue aportar datos sobre el comportamiento de la regeneración en distintas etapas del manejo por cortas de selección en grupos en bosques de lenga. Para ello se realizó una evaluación de la instalación y supervivencia de la regeneración en un bosque ubicado en el sur de la provincia de Chubut, Argentina, sometido a este tipo de cortas. Se analizó la regeneración en tres aspectos diferentes: a) una situación equivalente al estado inicial del bosque, antes de ser intervenido; b) el estado de la regeneración instalada en claros abiertos hace aproximadamente 40 a os y, c) los efectos del aprovechamiento sobre la regeneración, producidos durante la ampliación de los claros. Los resultados indican que en el bosque analizado la aplicación del método permite que se establezca satisfactoriamente la regeneración natural, observándose una alta presencia en toda la superficie y una buena respuesta de la misma ante las aperturas del dosel. Los da os producidos durante la cosecha en la ampliación de los claros son aceptables. Multichannel effects in Rashba quantum wires

Abstract: We investigate intersubband mixing effects in multichannel quantum wires in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and attached to two terminals. When the contacts are ferromagnetic and their magnetization direction is perpendicular to the Rashba field, the spin-transistor current is expected to depend in a oscillatory way on the Rashba coupling strength due to spin coherent oscillations of the travelling electrons. Nevertheless, we find that the presence of many propagating modes strongly influences the spin precession effect, leading to (i) a quenching of the oscillations and (ii) strongly irregular curves for high values of the Rashba coupling. We also observe that in the case of leads' magnetization parallel to the Rashba field, the conductance departs from a uniform value as the Rashba strength increases. We also discuss the Rashba interaction induced current polarization effects when the contacts are not magnetic and investigate how this mechanism is affected by the presence of several propagating channels.
