Notas para una historia de la desnutrición en la Iberoamérica del siglo XX

Abstract: the work analyzes the principal determinants and the characteristics of the malnutrition in latin america during the second half of the 20th century. first, are explained the bases of the modern problem of the hunger and the malnutrition (undernourishment), so much in his physiological as social dimension, on having been outlined his condition of social calamity and of biological expression of the underdevelopment and of the social inequalities. secondly, from contemporary testimonies, there are exposed the principal characteristics of the malnutrition that has affected the latin-american population, and the causes that explain it. finally, like conclusion, are underlined the negative consequences of not having taken advantage of the opportunity that was carrying the challenge of overcoming the determining factors of the malnutrition (undernourishment), and to have finished the 20th century with an epidemiological nutritional panorama where the problems of the hunger and the malnutrition coexist with phenomena as those of the obesity of the poverty.

Abstract: El trabajo analiza los principales determinantes y las características de la desnutrición en América Latina durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX. En primer lugar, se explican las bases del problema moderno del hambre y la desnutrición, tanto en su dimensión fisiológica como social, al destacarse su condición de calamidad social y de expresión biológica del subdesarrollo y de las desigualdades sociales. En segundo lugar, a partir de testimonios contemporáneos, se exponen las principales características de la desnutrición que ha afectado a la población iberoamericana, y las causas que la explican. Por último, a modo de conclusión, se subrayan las consecuencias negativas de no haber aprovechado la oportunidad que conllevaba el reto de superar los factores condicionantes de la malnutrición por defecto, y haber finalizado el siglo XX con un panorama epidemiológico nutricional donde los problemas del hambre y la desnutrición conviven con fenómenos como los de la obesidad de la pobreza. Community health and social action in the epidemiologic control of infantile Trachoma, Spain (1932-1939)

Abstract: Within the context of the endemic trachoma that affected different regions of Spain until the 1960s, this paper analyses the epidemiological determinants of child trachoma and its treatment, based on a preventive care model which incorporated the concept of community health that took shape during the interwar period. Early detection of cases, together with preventive measures, education, therapy and inspections, such as those carried out by visiting nurses, all helped to control the disease. Our results reaffirm the validity of the horizontal intervention strategies used for improving the sanitary conditions and environmental factors responsible for this prevalence of trachoma. En el contexto de la endemia tracomatosa que afectó a diversas regiones espa olas hasta la década de 1960, se analizan los determinantes epidemiológicos del tracoma infantil y su abordaje desde el modelo de asistencia preventiva que encerraba el concepto de salud comunitaria que se perfiló en el período de entreguerras. La detección precoz de casos, unida a actividades preventivas, educativas, terapéuticas y de inspección, como las que llevaron a cabo las enfermeras visitadoras, contribuyeron al control de la enfermedad. Los resultados reafirman la validez de las estrategias de intervención horizontal de mejora de las condiciones higiénicas y de los factores medioambientales que explicaban la prevalencia del tracoma.

Abstract: During the early decades of the 20th century, the Spanish socio-sanitary situation was described as catastrophic, both in the urban as well as in the rural setting. In that context, sanitation emerged as one of the key elements of the regeneration process taken on by hygiene in its role as mediator. Through the works of hygienists G. de Membrillera and Luis Mu oz Antu ano, published in 1921, we have approached the analysis of the sanitary situation of rural Spain during this period. En los primeros decenios del siglo XX, la situación socio-sanitaria de la sociedad espa ola fue descrita como catastrófica, tanto en el ámbito urbano como en el rural. En aquel contexto, el saneamiento del medio aparece como una de las claves del proceso de regeneración que asumió la higiene en su papel de mediadora. A través de las obras de los higienistas G. De Membrillera y Luis Mu oz Antu ano, publicadas en 1921, nos hemos acercado al análisis de la situación sanitaria de la Espa a rural durante este periodo.

Abstract: Spain was unsuccessful in ensuring vaccination for all its infant population during the XIX Century. Using as a case-study the city of Alicante we deal, in this, work with the main causes of this failure. The absence of proper public health services, the opposition or the neglect of the population and some technical obstacles were the main reasons for the very irregular vaccination practices in Alicante. Espa a no pudo asegurar la vacunación de toda su población infantil durante el siglo XIX. En este trabajo nos ocupamos de las causas de este fracaso utilizando como estudio de caso la ciudad de Alicante. Las principales causas de la inconstante práctica de la vacunación en Alicante fueron la ausencia de servicios sanitarios adecuados, la oposición o la negligencia de la población y algunos obstáculos técnicos.

Abstract: this study analyses the historical background data on spanish community nutrition by means of the study of the first attempts toward institutionalization which took place in the nutrition and food hygiene division of the spanish national health school, restricting the search to the 1930-1936 period. in conjunction with the training of the public healthcare professional in the subjects related to nutrition and diet, a research program was carried out which took in three major areas of work. in order to be able to ascertain what the average regular diet of spaniards and to serve as guidance for the preventive measures aimed at achieving a proper diet, consumption-related studies and surveys were conducted. a study was made of the chemical composition of spanish foods for the purpose of determining the possible lacks. lastly, the health problems entailed in a deficient diet in risk groups such as diabetics were analyzed. the results of the research revealed that the average diet of spaniards, especially those of the working classes, was far from being able to be considered balanced from the nutritional point of view. the greatest problems lay in a deficit of animal proteins, as well as major lacks in mineral and vitamin intake. the outbreak of the spanish civil war in july 1936 halted the institutionalization process being carried out. it was only in the 1960?s, following the parenthesis of the first stage of the franco era, that the health authorities once again took an interest in these diet-related problems.

Abstract: El trabajo aborda, a través de la obra de José María Bengoa Lecanda (1913-2010), la condición de intolerable social que alcanzó, a lo largo del siglo XX, el problema del hambre y la desnutrición. Así mismo, intenta mostrar la oportunidad que comportaba dicho reto, si como parecía razonable, se trataba de corregir los factores condicionantes que estaban detrás del hambre y la desnutrición, en particular la pobreza y la falta de equidad.ABSTRACTWork addresses, through the work of José María Bengoa Lecanda (1913-2010), the condition of intolerable social reached throughout the 20th century, the problem of hunger, undernourishment and malnutrition. Likewise, try to show the opportunity that behaved this challenge, if as it seemed reasonable, it was correcting the factors that were behind hunger and malnutrition, in particular poverty and inequity.

Abstract: This research comprises a bibliometric study of 252 monographic articles published between 1938 and 1964, which appeared in the collection In the Service of Spain and the Spanish Child (Al Servicio de Espa a y del Ni o Espa ol). This initiative was part of a programme that sought to combat infant and maternal mortality; it was implemented by Franco’s regime and grounded in its totalitarian assumptions and pronatalist policies. La investigación aporta un estudio bibliométrico de la Colección de 252 monografías, publicadas entre 1938 y 1964, que aparecieron en la colección Al Servicio de Espa a y del Ni o Espa ol. Dicha iniciativa formaba parte del programa de lucha contra la mortalidad infantil y maternal que puso en marcha el régimen franquista, desde sus presupuestos totalitarios y sus políticas pronatalistas.
