Mohammad Katanbafnasab, Bassam Abu-Hijleh
Engineering (ENG) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/eng.2013.51B010
Abstract:

The aim of this research was to explore the energy benefits and future potential of using Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) and Electrochromic Glazing (EG) within the climatic conditions of the city of Abu Dhabi. The Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES-VE) energy modeling software was used to assess the energy performance, mainly the reductions in HVAC and lighting, for different configurations and compare that to the base case scenario for south, east, west, and north facing facades. The results showed that the BIPV is most advantageous on the south fa?ade while the EC glazing performs best on the north facing windows. Moreover, the change in sensor location increased the energy savings for both cases, although the change was very marginal compared to the change of the glass properties. Using an automated light control system with dimming for both models, compared against the standard on-off lighting mechanism in the base case, the BIPV proves to have a higher total annual energy saving potential for most orientations, upto 33.5% while dynamic EC was best suited for the North orientation resulting in 7.4% reduction in the total annual energy consumption.

Is Net Income after Tax a Better Measure of Firm Performance than Taxable Income?
Bassam Mahmoud Abu-Abbas
Asian Journal of Business Management , 2011,
Abstract: Jordan Securities Commission Disclosure Directives requires that listed corporations in Amman Stock Exchange to report both taxable income and income after tax in their financial statements. This study examines which components of income statement, taxable income or net income after tax, is a better measure of firm performance. In addition, the study tests the association between stock returns and taxable income and net income after tax. The study uses the Vuong's likelihood ratio test to determine whether or not there are significant differences in the adjusted R2 between taxable income's model and net income after tax' model. Data from Amman Stock Exchange during the period 1999-2008 are used. Consistent with prior literature, the results show that taxable income and net income after tax are value relevant in determining stock returns. In addition, the findings indicate that taxable income and net income after tax each has the same ability to measure firm performance. These results provide a useful contribution to the literature because it strengthens the evidence that both taxable income and net income after tax have same ability to measure firm performance. In other words, each can substitute the other.

Engineering (ENG) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/eng.2013.51B024
Abstract: This paper, computer energy modeling is used to estimate the potential energy savings of refurbishing existing public federal housing in the United Arab Emirates. Such houses are built by the UAE Ministry of Public Works (MoPW) in five of the seven emirates that make up the UAE federation. The energy modeling was performed using the Integrated Environmental Solutions-Virtual Environment (IES-VE) commercial software. The study covered representative MoPW houses built in the period of 1974-2012. The results indicate potential energy savings upto 30.8% for the case of model 717 when refurbished to 2 Pearls standards compared to the as built configuration. The results showed little benefit in going from 1 Pearl to 2 Pearls refurbishment level. Thus 1 Pearl seems to be the most practical. This shows the high potential for energy, and thus environmental, savings should refurbishment be carried out on the homes built by the MoPW.

Open Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OJOG) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ojog.2018.88078
Abstract: Background: Preterm labor (PTL) remains a major source of neonatal morbidity, and mortality. Currently the trans-vaginal cervical length (TVCL), and/or cervico-vaginal fetal fibronectin (fFN) are the common diagnostic tools used for prediction of PTL. Consequently, many women and their fetuses are exposed unnecessarily tocolysis and hospital admission. Objectives: This study was designed to compare the diagnostic accuracy of PremaQuick versus Actim Partus in prediction of PTL in symptomatic women within 14 days. Patients and Methods: Two-hundred and twenty women (220) were included in this comparative prospective study and classified into two groups: 110 women with threatened preterm labor (TPTL) in the study group, and 110 controls (no TPTL). Women included in the study were subjected to: through history, collection of the cervico-vaginal fluid (CVF) samples for assessment by PremaQuick and Actim Partus tests, followed by trans-vaginal cervical length (TVCL) assessment. Studied women managed according to the hospitals protocol, with follow-up weekly in the obstetrics outpatients clinic after discharge from the hospital until delivery. The main outcome measures the diagnostic accuracy of PremaQuick versus Actim Partus in prediction of PTL in symptomatic women within 14 days of admission. Results: PremaQuick test was significantly more specific with higher positive predictive value (PPV) in prediction of PTL in symptomatic women within 14 days (95.5% and 89.6%; respectively) compared to CL <
Changes in growth variables and potassium content in leaves of Black Barley in response to NaCl
Abu-Al-Basal, Mariam A.;Yasseen, Bassam T.;
Brazilian Journal of Plant Physiology , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1677-04202009000400002
Abstract: much attention is being focused on the black barley (hordeum distichum l.) as a local cultivar offering good model for a cereal crop has traits of resistance to drought and salinity during vegetative growth stages. although black was sensitive to salt stress during germination, it developed gradual tolerance with age and proved very tolerant during growth and development stages. the data of study clearly revealed how this cultivar was superior over arivat (hordeum vulgare l.) in many physiological aspects such as leaf growth variables (i.e. rate and duration) and processes (i.e. cell division), tiller production and potassium content. black barley had more tillers, faster rate and longer duration of growth processes which was accompanied with potassium accumulation, as sodium chloride concentration increased in the growth medium. thus, the ability of black cultivar to accumulate k+ could have promoted growth variables (i.e. faster rate and longer duration of growth processes). arivat, on the other hand, might have suffered from k+ deficiency; which could explain the adverse effect of salt stress on leaf growth variables and processes. moreover, the relative water content (rwc) and proline can clearly distinguish the two cultivars; rwc was higher and proline concentration was lower in leaves of black as compared with arivat. therefore, black barley proved efficient in maintaining growth, ion homeostasis, and might sacrifice less in growth under osmotic stress conditions. the possible mechanism of the effect of sodium chloride on potassium accumulation in black barley is discussed.

Journal of Emerging Trends in Computing and Information Sciences , 2012,
Abstract: As a completion of Arabic hand written recognition, the Arabic numbers which are commonly known as “Old-Indian Numbers” are taken place in full text recognition and applications. Hand written Arabic numbers have less complexity than Arabic characters, but such researches are has few interests. The curves shape of these numbers make its characteristics difficult to be recognized by intelligent systems. This paper adapts and implements neural network to takes the features of number segment and recognize it in high reliability and accuracy. The numbers are being segmented by morphological approach. A MATLAB based program is developed to validity testing of the proposed system enhance the accuracy to by 98% over the testing data set.
