Development of a Simulation Software for Plant Asset Depreciation Computation Using Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System  [PDF]

Abstract:
This work presents the computation of depreciation under Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System using simulation software developed for the purpose. The three case studies presented provide in-depth analysis and applications of the simulation software that was developed. The results from the three case studies proved that the investment of $900,000 by Virgin Atlantic airline to purchase three new aircrafts will be recovered in 8 years; Toyota’s investment of $152,000 in the automated assembly line will be recovered in 8 years while AEG’s investments in the two forklift trucks and crane will both be recovered in 8 years for the same reason. These results gave a quick insight for evaluating such an unstructured real life problem as depreciation (cost recovery) in organizations.

Abstract:
The crankshaft is the part of an engine which translates reciprocating linear piston motion into rotation. Automobile crankshaft failure, apart from poor maintenance culture, is caused by age and distance covered. These attributes which caused crankshaft failure were investigated using questionnaire administration and oral interviews of the maintenance expert and experienced personnel in the three selected crankshaft maintenance shops in Akure, Nigeria based on six popular crankshaft brands. Information/data on failure rate and failure consequence thresholds were established and served as a decision rule on the basis at which optimal reconditioning process, replacement and interchangeability system of the crankshaft components were identified on the occurrence of failure rate (R1) and failure consequence (β1). Computer algorithm was developed for the software package, using Microsoft Visual C# computer language. The software was tested to determine their level of performance. The results generated from the application of these systems were categorised into six scenarios whereby the MC230 Class gave the best result. The software will be veritable tools in predicting crankshaft failure in automobile, manufacturing, and machine tools industries, for prompt solution.

Abstract:
A telescopic platform is equipment used in the Laboratory or Workshop to carry out different kinds of job on the ceiling e.g. fixing or replacing of electric bulbs, fixing of electric fans etc. it is also used to change streetlight on campus. Now that technology changes rapidly, the use of step ladders of different kinds with low reliability and quite a number of limitations should gradually be replaced by less expensive alternative. To this end, Telescopic Platform has been designed and constructed to meet the urgent need for replacement. Materials were locally sourced for such as Bevel gear, Sprockets, Chain, Power screw, Nut etc. and used for the fabrication, which involves welding grinding, fitting practices as well as assembly. The Telescopic Platform so produced is mobile, suitable for use on flat, sloping and terraced surfaces with high reliability. Its height can be varied within a range designed. The telescopic platform designed can offer a good capacity of 834 N with efficiency of 85% and can conveniently carry an average human weight of 736 N.

Abstract:
Performance status has to do with profitability of manufacturing industries. Good performance brings about increase in productivity. There are in existence different models and software, but none has been able to develop software based on American Productivity Center model (APC). The strategic decisions required were identified as: Factor Productivity, Price Recovery and Cost Effectiveness indices, while the parameters used are: quantity produced, price per unit, labour input time, cost per hour of labour as well as the period. These were used to develop the models for the strategic decisions mentioned and software (PPE-INDICES, 2016) for implementation of the models using Java programming language. Olam cocoa processing company was used as the case study and the software was able to report the performance of the company thus: 24%, 51% and 87% increase in Factor Productivity, Price Recovery and Cost Effectiveness indices respectively for period 2013/2014, 29%, 20% and 55% increase in Factor Productivity, Price Recovery and Cost Effectiveness indices respectively for period 2014/2015, and 23%, 13% and 39% increase in Factor Productivity, Price Recovery and Cost Effectiveness indices respectively for period 2015/2016. The model and its software will find its application in all manufacturing industries of developing and developed countries.

Abstract: Climate change is one of the major challenges of our time and adds considerable stress to our societies and to the environment. From shifting weather patterns that threaten food production, to rising sea levels that increase the risk of catastrophic flooding, the impacts of climate change are global in scope and unprecedented in scale. Without drastic action today, adapting to these impacts in the future will be more difficult and costly. This overview deals with the concept of Global Climate Change, the associated terms, causes, consequences, solutions and its potential health impact. It shows the need to act urgently if we are to avoid an irreversible build-up of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and global warming at a potentially huge cost to the economy and society worldwide. Therefore, addressing climate change requires an “unprecedented level of cooperation, not only between countries, but also between different levels of Governments, private sector and individuals.
Production and Characterization of Porous Insulating Fired Bricks from Ifon Clay with Varied Sawdust Admixture  [PDF]

Abstract: The effect of compositions of saw dust admixture on thermal conductivity and other mechanical/refractory properties of Ifon Clay was investigated. The raw clay gotten from Ifon in Ondo state was first processed to very fine particles and characterized using SEM/EDX, XRD and XRF. Sawdust from mahogany tree procured from a saw mill in Akure the State capital of Ondo State was also dried to remove moisture present. A composite mixture of this dried saw dust with the processed clay was made at various proportions of the saw dust, with a little addition of water for plasticity. Sam- ples of cylindrical dimensions were then produced from the mounting press by the process of compaction with a very high pressure. The samples were dried and then finally fired in the furnace at 1000?C for a final curing. Properties which include thermal shock resistance, bulk density, cold crushing strength, thermal conductivity and porosity were obtained by the appropriate standard test methods. The microstructures of the fired samples were also characterized with SEM using back scattered secondary imaging. The results show that the amount of sawdust admixture affects the properties variously; porosity increases with percentage increase in sawdust admixture while the thermal conductivity and other properties of the sample reduce with percentage increase in sawdust admixture. It was concluded that for structural insulating bricks where compressive strength is important the sawdust admixture should not exceed 10 to 15 percent.
Assessment of Groundwater Quality and Saline Intrusions in Coastal Aquifers of Lagos Metropolis, Nigeria  [PDF]

Abstract: As a result of immense industrialisation and high population growth, groundwater is heavily relied on in Lagos metropolis to serve as an alternative source of water where surface water is seriously polluted. The continued reliance on ground water has resulted in its decline in quantity and quality. In this study, the coastal aquifers of Lagos metropolis were selected for an assessment of its groundwater quality and impact of saline intrusion. Water samples collected along the coastal region were subjected to various physicochemical analyses. Results obtained were compared with permissible values for drinking water stated by Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA) and World Health Organization (WHO). The results revealed that all the water samples were significantly hard (range 522.14 – 1233.34mg/L). The salinity was delineated by conductivity measurements. Three samples had specific conductance above the stated limits for fresh water. The samples however met the stipulated limits for drinking water for the other tested parameters.
Development of an Oil Filter Spanner for Small-Scale Automotive Maintenance Industries

Abstract: Auto-mechanic technicians have been facing problem in loosening and tightening oil filters on engines while using traditional methods. The old approaches include the application of plain metal belts that do easily slips after a short period of use, another one used a short chain welded to a short rod locally fabricated and used to wrap the filter. In this study an oil filter spanner that can solve aforementioned problems with the application of little energy and at the same time accommodates all sizes of filter at an affordable cost, useable in automotive maintenance industries of the developing countries was designed and fabricated. The instrument is a conglomeration of components including handle, arm-base, movable nut, metal belt and a shaft. The use of the developed filter Can spanner has reduced the effort of the auto-maintenance industries by about 90% as compared to the use of traditional methods.

But as it deals with the basic concepts behind genetic research, it is still useful.A wonderful wall chart explains, in a well laid out, engaging and serious manner, the underlying genetics, techniques and theory used to target and treat a genetic disease.
