Primary Production Dynamics of Two Dominant Macrophytes in Wular Lake, a Ramsar Site in Kashmir Himalaya

Abstract: Growing season changes in the organic matter, organic carbon and chlorophyll content of the two dominant macrophytes, Nymphoides peltatum and Ceratophyllum demersum of Wular Lake, a Ramsar Site in Kashmir Himalaya were analysed during March- November 2011. The content of organic matter and organic carbon for Nymphoides peltatum were 114.1 g m-2 and 53.1 g C m-2 and Ceratophyllum demersum were 57.0 g m-2 and 26.4 g C m-2. Chlorophyll A (Chl a) and chlorophyll A+B (Chl a+b) pigments ranged from 1.75 mg g-1 (Chl a) and 2.1mg g-1 (Chl a+b) in Nymphoides peltatum to 4.41 mg g-1 (Chl a) and 5.69 mg g-1 (Chl a+b) in Ceratophyllum demersum. In full leaf out, the latter aquatic plants exceeded 15-20% coverage of the open water surface.Ceratophyllum demersum and Nymphoides peltatum achieved maximum growth in June and August respectively, but significant differences in their growth dynamics was observed. At the end of the vegetation period, these plants sink to the bottom and decompose.

Abstract: A composite ion exchange material, polyaniline stannic silicate was prepared under different experimental conditions. Ion exchange material synthesized at pH 1.0 shows an ion exchange capacity 1.6 meq/g for Na+ ions. The exchanger has been characterized on the basis of X-ray and TGA. Ion exchange capacity, pH titration, elution and distribution studies were also carried out to determine the preliminary ion exchange properties of the material. The effect of temperature on the ion exchange capacity of the material at different temperatures has been studied. The sorption behavior of metal ions was also explored in different surfactant mediums. The practical utility of the material was explored by achieving quantitative separation of toxic metal ions in synthetic mixtures.

Abstract:

Polyaniline stannic molybdate—an organic-inorganic composite material, was prepared via sol-gel mixing of organic polymer polyaniline into matrices of inorganic precipitate of stannicmolybdate. The composite material synthesized at pH 1.2 showed an ion exchange capacity 1.8 meq/g for Na+ ions. Ion exchange capacity, pH titration and distribution studies were carried out to determine the preliminary ion exchange properties of the material. The distribution studies showed the selectivity of Hg(II) ions by this material. The effect of temperature on the ion exchange capacity of the material at different temperatures had been studied. The sorption behavior of metal ions was also explored in different surfactant media.

Abstract: We prove the existence of solutions for a second-order nonlinear impulsive boundary-value problem by applying Schaefer's fixed point theorem. Results for periodic and anti-periodic impulsive boundary-value problems can be obtained as special cases of the results in this article.

Evaluation of Antiarthritic Potential of Methanolic Extract of Gentiana kurroo Royle

Abstract: Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic disorder which involves the activation of immune system against the self-tissues. The main targets of this disease are the joints. Being systemic the development of this disease involves different mechanisms and thus the exact cause of this disease remains unknown. Although different drugs have been developed, none has been found to be the cure for this disease. In the current study the rat carrageenin paw was used as a model for acute inflammation and mycobacterium induced adjuvant arthritic model was used for exploring the antiarthritic potential of methanolic extract of Gentiana kurroo. In this study the different extracts tested showed less inhibition of acute inflammation than methanolic extract. The methanolic extract was further used in different doses and the anti-inflammatory efficacy was found to be dose dependent. The results obtained were significant with the control and the standard groups. In the arthritic model the methanolic extract showed decrease in the paw volume of arthritic animals and also in the arthritic symptoms. Again the results obtained were found to be significantly dose dependent. From the results obtained it can be concluded that this extract may serve as a source of drug against the rheumatoid arthritis. 1. Introduction Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by synovial inflammation and irreversible joint destruction and leads to significant disability [1]. It has affected about 1% of the population throughout the world with male and female ratio of 1?:?2.5 [2]. The etiology of this disease is still unknown [3]. The various proinflammatory molecules including reactive oxygen species, prostaglandins, leukotrines and cytokines released by macrophages are involved in the cause of this disorder [4, 5]. The potential target for the treatment of chronic inflammatory conditions can be the regulatory checks of these mediators secreted by immune cells and the inhibition of enzymes like COX and LOX for the metabolic modulation of arachidonic acid [6, 7]. RA being a systemic disease can affect the whole body and internal organs (with exceptions) such as the lungs, heart, and eyes [8, 9]. Although different categories like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), immunosuppressants, and steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are in use, the limitation is their potential side effects.
