Mitochondrial Translation in Health and Disease  [PDF]
Claudia C. Ferreiro-Barros, Mario H. Barros
Open Journal of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases (OJEMD) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojemd.2013.32A001

Mitochondrial disorders have become the most common cause of inborn errors of metabolism. Impairments in mitochondrial protein synthesis are one of the causes of these diseases, which are clinically and genetically heterogeneous. The mitochondrial translation machinery decodes 13 polypeptides essential for the oxidative phosphorylation process. Mitochondria protein synthesis depends on the integrity of mitochondrial rRNAs and tRNAs genes, and at least one hundred of nuclear encoded products. Diseases caused by mutations in mitochondrial genes as well as in ribosomal proteins, translational factors, RNA modifying enzymes, and all other constituents of the translational machinery have been described in patients with combine respiratory chain deficiency, and are the object of this review.

A global view of industrial logistics
Barros, Lilian;
Gest?o & Produ??o , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-530X1997000200004
Abstract: the term "industrial logistics" is a wide-reaching concept which incorporates various forms of supporting activities. in this paper, an attempt is made to provide a definition of the term which is broad enough to incorporate these various views. in a few words, there are three large categories of logistic support: (i) product support; (ii) production support, and (iii) industrial sector support. although not new as a concept, there has been a recent surge of interest about industrial logistics, for good reasons. one of them might be that the absence of explicit integrated logistic considerations may explain the widening technological gap between the developed and developing worlds.
Clima e endemias tropicais
Barros, Marcus;
Estudos Avan?ados , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142006000300025
Abstract: this article depicts discrete ways of understanding the tropics and the relationship between tropical climate and people's health. by rejecting the biased notion that diseases derive solely from climatic conditions, the author proposes analyses more concerned with the underlying socioeconomic reality, more humanitarian and less fatalist, and conceives sustainable development as the way to achieve a balance between human life and nature.
Evolu??o do pensamento epidemiológico: O Ser de uma Disciplina
Arquivos de Medicina , 2006,
Abstract: epidemiology is recognized as a fundamental science for both public health and clinics, providing technical approaches, methodological solutions and original information essential to answer the different challenges posed in the field of health research, from the identification of needs to the evaluation of interventions. the extent of the method that justifies epidemiology as an autonomous scientific discipline and the comprehensiveness of its domains, both fundamental and substantive, make epidemiology one of the most fascinating and, by nature, modern areas of medical knowledge and reasoning. this article covers the landmarks that contributed to shape the epidemiological thinking throughout history, and the challenges currently faced by this discipline.
Intérpretes e confessionários como express?es de políticas linguísticas da Igreja voltadas à confiss?o
Barros, Candida;
DELTA: Documenta??o de Estudos em Lingüística Teórica e Aplicada , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-44502011000200005
Abstract: the aim of this study was to analyse the linguistic policy of the church with regard to confession in a multilingual context between the 16th and 18th centuries. the documents used in the analysis included theological discussions in europe about the legitimacy (or not) of the interpreter in this religious context, as well as confessionaries in indian languages during the evangelisation period carried out by the spanish and the portuguese. the confessions in indian languages were examined through their use of orientation signals used to guide the missionary in the dialogue with the penitent. the form of organization of the confessionaries in the indian languages was a textual genre appropriate for learning a foreign language. in particular, we have compared the position of the jesuits concerning the interpreter in two settings: before and after the establishment of a confessionary in tupi. in conclusion, we examine the adaptations in the european discussion on the role of the interpreter brought about by the evangelisation of the indians.
Limites à condena??o do aborto seletivo: a deficiência em contextos de países periféricos
Barros, Alessandra;
Physis: Revista de Saúde Coletiva , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-73312003000200004
Abstract: the article analyzes the opinion presented by adrienne asch in "prenatal diagnosis and selective abortion" in this issue of physis. we begin by discussing the author's position on the discriminatory nature of selective abortion, based on the quality of her argumentative rhetoric. we then proceed to review her position in light of brazil's socio-cultural reality as a peripheral country which is characterized (as compared to the united states) as having restrictive legislation in relation to abortion, incipient organized political mobilization by people with disabilities, and a distinct history of eugenic doctrines and practices.
Alunos com deficiência nas escolas regulares: limites de um discurso
Barros, Alessandra;
Saúde e Sociedade , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-12902005000300008
Abstract: this article reports the results of a research that analyzed aspects of the narratives on behalf of the inclusion of disabled students in ordinary schools. to undertake this analysis, it was chosen, as an empirical target, the advertising strategy carried out by the brazilian federal government - represented by the educational state department (called mec). it was focused specifically on an advertising piece that pushed the second governmental campaign started in the beginning of the year 2000. the speech analysis was settled in the intersection of the advertisement's making off and the government's political position regarding the social inclusion of the disabled ones. it has to be noticed that the issue of disability was particular puzzling for the federal government because at the same time the needs of the disabled persons were discussed as a public policy, disability itself - claimed in its harmfulness - was also thought as a means to convince the population engaging polio vaccination campaigns. once it's on the basis of the speech analysis that it aims to point out the historical circumstances on which a speech is being developed, so, one can say that the goal of this tool is to make it clear that a speech is a social construction. taken this way, the speech analysis engaged upon this research, at the same time that described the steps that led to a slogan campaign, tried to show that the words (in its political correctness) that fulfill people's minds were not there since ever.
Herbert A. Simon and the concept of rationality: boundaries and procedures
Barros, Gustavo;
Revista de Economia Política , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-31572010000300006
Abstract: this paper discusses herbert a. simon's conception of rationality in two of its principal general definitions: bounded rationality and procedural rationality. it argues that the latter is the one that better synthesizes the author's view about rational behavior and that the former fills mainly a critical function. they are complementarily used by simon in this sense. in spite of that, it is argued that it is the low degree of specificity of the concept of bounded rationality one of the reasons for its relatively greater success.
Crítica científica e modelos interpretativos em Nietzsche
Barros, Roberto;
Trans/Form/A??o , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-31732008000200004
Abstract: from the denounce of the contradictory presence of dogmatic moral presuppositions in the formulation of scientific activity principles, nietzsche conceives another notion of science compatible with the hegemonic option for knowledge, which he recognizes as present in occidental culture. this article intends to discuss on which parameters nietzsche, in the intermediary period of his philosophical production, proposes his interpretation of occidental science and formulates a demystifying critique of it.
