The City as an Object of Research: Microsociology of Urban Spaces in Brazil  [PDF]
Irlys Barreira, Geísa Mattos
Current Urban Studies (CUS) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/cus.2014.22013
Abstract:

Sociological and anthropological productions that take the city as their object of investigation have met new approaches in Brazil, especially since the 1990s. This paper aims to discuss the recent theoretical and empirical trajectories of research proposals as their authors take the city to the spotlight. This scientific endeavor analyzes a corpus of theses and dissertations produced by students of the Sociology Graduation Program of the Federal University of Ceará, in Brazil, as such works encompass shifts and trends in predominant theories and methods of the Social Sciences in Brazil over the past two decades. They demonstrate an increasing interest for the microsociological look towards the urban, which we argue to be an effect of the influence of Anthropology in the theoretical and methodological approach of research objects. From the set of selected works, the city is composed by territories cross-cut by a strong dimension of power and conflict, as an influence of Political Geography. French Sociology and Historiography contribute with theoretical perspectives that prioritize the senses of creation and insubordination, thus attributing to the practice of diverse social actors in urban places. In the set of works, the neighborhood unfolds as a microcosm of social practices, embedded with multiple senses of belonging and spatial conflicts, which are expressive of a wider social struggle.

A eficácia simbólica da memória e seus limites
Barreira, Irlys;
Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69092007000100008
Abstract: this paper evaluates, based on an analysis of family feuds and political dispute occurring in a county in the state of ceara, different uses of memory as an affirmative tool by factions involved in election campaigns. after the mayor?s assassination, the recollection of the crime served as reference to several election campaigns, including actions of a juridical nature by means of which the split between victims and culprits was recovered. in the last election, speeches with reference to the need of "forgetting" the past and "thinking about what would be better for the county" prevailed and led to the victory of some relatives of the accused of the mayor?s death in 1998. based on an assessment of the political situation in the county of acarau, this paper approaches the issue of converting memory to political emblem, asserting the limits of its symbolic effectiveness and the latest (re)signifying of the "past."
Hyperbolicity and recurrence in dynamical systems: a survey of recent results
Luis Barreira
Mathematics , 2002,
Abstract: We discuss selected topics of current research interest in the theory of dynamical systems, with emphasis on dimension theory, multifractal analysis, and quantitative recurrence. The topics include the quantitative versus the qualitative behavior of Poincar\'e recurrence, the product structure of invariant measures and return times, the dimension of invariant sets and invariant measures, the complexity of the level sets of local quantities from the point of view of Hausdorff dimension, and the conditional variational principles as well as their applications to problems in number theory. We present the foundations of each area, and discuss recent developments and applications. All the necessary notions from ergodic theory, hyperbolic dynamics, dimension theory, and the thermodynamic formalism are briefly recalled. We concentrate on uniformly hyperbolic dynamics, although we also refer to nonuniformly hyperbolic dynamics. Instead of always presenting the most general results, we made a selection with the purpose of illustrating the main ideas while we avoid the accessory technicalities.
Campos de ajuda e modos de pertencimento: um mapa moral da representa??o política em campanha eleitoral
Barreira, César;Barreira, Irlys Alencar F.;
Horizontes Antropológicos , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-71832012000100013
Abstract: seeking to analyze practices and perceptions that build up around the vote and choice of candidates, this paper considers ways of belonging, of recognition, and moral evaluations that emerge in a competitive setting of candidates running for the city council of aquiraz, ceará, during the election campaign of 2008. this work consists of recording the existence of a symbolic economy made up of practice and perceptions which influence the support of candidates, more frequently built in the fields of gift rather than oriented by rights. the exchange of gifts and its limitations, the senses of belonging and recognition, and the paradoxical logic of interest versus disinterest provide relevant theoretical grounds to explain the pursuit of support for candidacies, the meanings of political representation and the transactions set around the vote.
A política de perto: recortes etnográficos de campanhas eleitorais
Barreira, Irlys Alencar Firmo;
Novos Estudos - CEBRAP , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-33002006000100011
Abstract: taking ethnographical notes and the concept of ritual as a guideline, this article discusses electoral acts in northeastern capitals in brazil. the main argument sustains that acts of campaign bring near what is understood as politics and the electors, making possible the presentation of opponents and redefining social pacts that validate the principles of political representation.
Usos da cidade: conflitos simbólicos em torno da memória e imagem de um bairro
Barreira,Irlys Alencar F.;
Análise Social , 2007,
Abstract: this article examines a symbolic conflict between the users of praia de iracema, a neighbourhood in fortaleza, a city in north-eastern brazil, taking land use types and practices there as its points of reference. the article shows how the neighbourhood is a peripheral one, involving discourses which acknowledge those, such as local residents and partners in urban development, with conservationist aims. in the context of so-called urban improvement or renewal, different definitions of the use and conservation of urban space emerge. the analysis, which focuses on the characteristics of praia de iracema, goes beyond a ?case study? by also looking at aspects which help us to think about the experience of urban transformation in other large modern cities.
Pulsa??es no cora??o da cidade: cenários de interven??o em centros urbanos contemporaneos
Barreira, Irlys Alencar F.;
Caderno CRH , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-49792010000200004
Abstract: in order to sort spaces and give back to urban centers their lost hegemonic role, contemporary urban policies have been seeking to foster different modes of intervention called "revitalization" or "requalification". the city, facing the valorization of its historical heritage, then becomes the object of architectural renovations and reforms, aimed at preservation, allowing for images and brands. the central objective of this paper is to reflect on the interventions in the contemporary metropolitan urban centers, including the most recent experiences conducted in brazilian northeastern cities. this paper, less interested in making propositional assessments, analyzes symbolic concepts and conflicts that guide practices of "revitalization." the presence of various consumers of public space (tourists, residents, merchants etc.) and the controversies surrounding the cultural and economic investments will serve as a guide for the ideas in the text.
O dispositivo de gozo na sociedade do controle
Danziato, Leonardo José Barreira;
Psicologia & Sociedade , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-71822010000300003
Abstract: from the propositions of foucault on a change of devices in modernity, leaving a "alliance device" to a "sexual device", and also taking into account the considerations of deleuze on the contemporary "society of control," the author presents a psychoanalytic reading of these changes in the processes of modern and contemporary subjectivation, proposing the regency of a new device today, which he called "enjoyment device." he argues in favor of his readings the capitalization of the plus de goce suggested by lacan, and the imperatives of enjoyment of our own times.
Política, memória e espa?o público: a via dos sentimentos
Barreira, Irlys Alencar Firmo;
Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69092001000200005
Abstract: the article analyses different mobilization and symbolic strategies against violence and in favor of justice led by a family victim of the murder of the father, at that time the mayor of a city called acaraú, in the countryside of ceará state. the campaign against the parliamentary immunity of the accused of the crime, based on a "combat against oblivion", is motivated by radical feelings that produce rituals with the women as the main characters and spokespersons of a discursive explosion. based on newspapers, interviews with the families and inhabitants of aracaú city and judicial documents, the author aims to investigate the different circuits of this memory mobilized by feelings that mediate public and private spheres. the article analyses the way politics take place, observing the reconversion of feelings that consolidate family divisions, partisan groups, points of view, showing collective sensibilities and moral principles. in sum, the discussed ideas converge on the comprehension of feelings and values that create distinctive rituals and expressive ways: mourning, slogans, emotions and denouncing speech.
Representa??es sobre a política entre lideran?as populares: limites e potencialidades de uma ferramenta conceitual
Barreira, Irlys Alencar F.;
Sociedade e Estado , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69922009000300007
Abstract: the idea of considering representations according to their dynamic configuration, as they are perceived within living experiences and political actions, inspired the main concepts explored by the article. based on research that investigated residents of the suburbs of the city of fortaleza, capital of ceará state, with the help of the technique associated with ethnographic experience, the article evaluates representations within a context of cultural meanings set as examples to native categories. the investigation was directed towards delineating potentialities and limits of representations seen as a conceptual tool when it evaluates the way informants assess issues related to politics and morals associated with themes of justice and social inadequacies.
