Diagnóstico das neuropatias periféricas idade, sexo e ocupa??o em rela??o às etiologias: age, sex and occupation in report to etiology
Barreira, Amilton Antunes;Marques Junior, Wilson;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1992, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1992000400007
Abstract: the etiology of 200 cases of peripheral neuropathies was studied taking into account the most affected age ranges, as well as the sex and occupation of the patients. the age ranges of our patients for the polyneuropathies consequent to alcoholism, for diabetic polyneuropathy, for guillain-barré syndrome and for hereditary sensorimotor neuropathies were 20 to 50 years, 10 to 70 years and 0 to 30 years. the age range of patients with leprosy and nerve injury was 20 to 50 years, and more frequently up to 30 years. alcoholic and diabetic polyneuropathies predominantly affected males, whereas injury to the median nerve and multiradiculopathies mainly affected women. approximately 1/3 of the alcoholic polyneuropathies affected laborers. inactivity was reported by 1/3 of the patients with diabetic polyneuropathies, by 25% of the patients with polyneuropathies consequent to alcoholism and by 24% of the patients with undefined polyneuropathies.
Barreira, Luciana Pranzetti;Philippi Junior, Arlindo;Rodrigues, Mario Sergio;
Engenharia Sanitaria e Ambiental , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-41522006000400012
Abstract: this paper discusses the quality of msw compost produced in the composting plants in operation in sao paulo state/brazil, in regard to their physical and chemical aspects. samples were collected twice (winter/2003 and summer/2004) in fourteen plants. the evaluated plants had different structure, therefore it was necessary a previous separation of the data in similar groups, so that they would make statistical sense. the groups were: dano plants; plants with rounding sieves; plants with grounders or mills; and plants without post-treatment of the composted material. it was possible to observe that there is a direct relation between the structure of the composting plants and the quality of the compost, the nutrients rate, the levels of heavy metals and the percentage of contaminants.
Barreira Junior, Alan Kardec;Moura, Frederico Castelo;Monteiro, Mario Luiz Ribeiro;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492011000200013
Abstract: case report of bilateral cavernous sinus syndrome due to primary non-hodgkin lymphoma of the central nervous system in a patient infected by the human immunodeficiency virus. a 51-year-old male patient infected by the human immunodeficiency virus but without antiretroviral treatment developed paralysis of the v and vi cranial nerves. imaging studies were obtained to investigate an orbital apex and a cavernous sinus syndrome. a computerized tomography scan of the orbit was normal but a high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated bilateral enlargement of the cavernous sinus. although primary lymphoma of the central nervous system is a rare condition, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis in immunocompromised patients who develop ocular motility abnormalities and imaging signs suggestive of infiltrative cavernous sinus lesions.
Diagnóstico das neuropatias periféricas diagnósticos sindr?micos, topográficos e etiológicos: syndromic, topographic and etiological diagnoses
Marques Junior, Wilson;Herrera, Ronaldo Francisco;Trade, Emília Sim?o;Barreira, Amilton Antunes;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1992, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1992000400006
Abstract: a retrospective study was conducted to identify the syndromic, topographic and etiological diagnoses made for a group of 209 patients with peripheral neuropathies. anamnesis and clinical-neurological examination were of fundamental importance for the syndromic and topographic diagnoses. electromyography played an important role, especially with respect to the topographic diagnoses. the etiological diagnoses depended on additional complementary tests such as: blood glucose levels and blood glucose tolerance test; nutritional evaluation; family evaluation; nerve, skin, pharynx and maxillary sinus biopsies; qualitative tests for the presence of porphyrins in urine; urinary levels of delta-aminolevulinic acid and porphobilinogen; and radiological examinations. the most frequently encountered polyneuropathies were those consequent to alcoholism or to diabetes, and those of the acute demyelinating inflammatory or hereditary type. among the cases of mononeuropathy, the most frequently diagnosed conditions were carpal tunnel syndromes, traumatic injury to the vii cranial nerve, and trigeminal neuralgias. leprosy, brachial plexus injury and thoracic outlet compression syndrome predominated among the multineuropathies.
Hipertens o venosa episcleral idiopática unilateral em mulher jovem Unilateral idiopathic elevated episcleral venous pressure in a young woman
Marcelo Mendes Lavezzo,Alan Kardec Barreira Junior,Ricardo Suzuki,Roberto Freire Santiago Malta
The objective is to report a 33 year old female who came to the emergency room of Ophthalmology complaining of reduced visual acuity on the left eye, in a progressive and insidious way, about two years ago. In the ophthalmological examination, she presented dilated tortuous vessels in her left bulbar conjunctiva, very high intraocular pressure and increased cupping of the optic disc. SITA-SWAP and 24:2 computed perimetry were performed on the right eye, both within normal limits. CT scans of the skull and orbits, and ultrasonography of the eyeball and doppler of the ophthalmic artery and the supra-orbital veins had no abnormalities. Thus, it was suggested the possibility of idiopathic elevated episcleral venous pressure, an exclusion diagnosis, since intra-cranial and intraorbital pathologies were excluded. The patient was treated medically with hypotensive eyedrops, with significant reduction of intraocular pressure on the left eye, but not enough, evolving to trabeculectomy.
The City as an Object of Research: Microsociology of Urban Spaces in Brazil  [PDF]
Irlys Barreira, Geísa Mattos
Current Urban Studies (CUS) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/cus.2014.22013

Sociological and anthropological productions that take the city as their object of investigation have met new approaches in Brazil, especially since the 1990s. This paper aims to discuss the recent theoretical and empirical trajectories of research proposals as their authors take the city to the spotlight. This scientific endeavor analyzes a corpus of theses and dissertations produced by students of the Sociology Graduation Program of the Federal University of Ceará, in Brazil, as such works encompass shifts and trends in predominant theories and methods of the Social Sciences in Brazil over the past two decades. They demonstrate an increasing interest for the microsociological look towards the urban, which we argue to be an effect of the influence of Anthropology in the theoretical and methodological approach of research objects. From the set of selected works, the city is composed by territories cross-cut by a strong dimension of power and conflict, as an influence of Political Geography. French Sociology and Historiography contribute with theoretical perspectives that prioritize the senses of creation and insubordination, thus attributing to the practice of diverse social actors in urban places. In the set of works, the neighborhood unfolds as a microcosm of social practices, embedded with multiple senses of belonging and spatial conflicts, which are expressive of a wider social struggle.

Barreira, Irlys;
Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69092007000100008
Abstract: this paper evaluates, based on an analysis of family feuds and political dispute occurring in a county in the state of ceara, different uses of memory as an affirmative tool by factions involved in election campaigns. after the mayor?s assassination, the recollection of the crime served as reference to several election campaigns, including actions of a juridical nature by means of which the split between victims and culprits was recovered. in the last election, speeches with reference to the need of "forgetting" the past and "thinking about what would be better for the county" prevailed and led to the victory of some relatives of the accused of the mayor?s death in 1998. based on an assessment of the political situation in the county of acarau, this paper approaches the issue of converting memory to political emblem, asserting the limits of its symbolic effectiveness and the latest (re)signifying of the "past."
Hyperbolicity and recurrence in dynamical systems: a survey of recent results
Luis Barreira
Mathematics , 2002,
Abstract: We discuss selected topics of current research interest in the theory of dynamical systems, with emphasis on dimension theory, multifractal analysis, and quantitative recurrence. The topics include the quantitative versus the qualitative behavior of Poincar\'e recurrence, the product structure of invariant measures and return times, the dimension of invariant sets and invariant measures, the complexity of the level sets of local quantities from the point of view of Hausdorff dimension, and the conditional variational principles as well as their applications to problems in number theory. We present the foundations of each area, and discuss recent developments and applications. All the necessary notions from ergodic theory, hyperbolic dynamics, dimension theory, and the thermodynamic formalism are briefly recalled. We concentrate on uniformly hyperbolic dynamics, although we also refer to nonuniformly hyperbolic dynamics. Instead of always presenting the most general results, we made a selection with the purpose of illustrating the main ideas while we avoid the accessory technicalities.
Barreira, César;Barreira, Irlys Alencar F.;
Horizontes Antropológicos , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-71832012000100013
Abstract: seeking to analyze practices and perceptions that build up around the vote and choice of candidates, this paper considers ways of belonging, of recognition, and moral evaluations that emerge in a competitive setting of candidates running for the city council of aquiraz, ceará, during the election campaign of 2008. this work consists of recording the existence of a symbolic economy made up of practice and perceptions which influence the support of candidates, more frequently built in the fields of gift rather than oriented by rights. the exchange of gifts and its limitations, the senses of belonging and recognition, and the paradoxical logic of interest versus disinterest provide relevant theoretical grounds to explain the pursuit of support for candidacies, the meanings of political representation and the transactions set around the vote.
A política de perto: recortes etnográficos de campanhas eleitorais
Barreira, Irlys Alencar Firmo;
Novos Estudos - CEBRAP , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-33002006000100011
Abstract: taking ethnographical notes and the concept of ritual as a guideline, this article discusses electoral acts in northeastern capitals in brazil. the main argument sustains that acts of campaign bring near what is understood as politics and the electors, making possible the presentation of opponents and redefining social pacts that validate the principles of political representation.
