The role of historical and local factors in determining species composition of the highland avifauna of Costa Rica and Western Panamá
Barrantes,Gilbert;
Revista de Biología Tropical , 2009,
Abstract: the formation of the mountain ranges of costa rica and western panamá, as well as the cold climatic conditions that prevailed during the upper pleistocene, played a crucial role in determining the bird species composition of the highlands in this region. glacial conditions favored dispersal movements of bird species from the andes, and from the neartic region. subsequent inter-glacial conditions reduced the connectivity between neotropical highlands (e.g., talamanca-andes), and between neotropical highlands and neartic temperate region, isolating recently established populations from the ancestral populations, and promoting speciation. within costa rica, the highland vegetation and the birds that occupied this vegetation possibly had a continuous distribution throughout all mountain ranges during glacial periods. this vegetation retreated to the summit of the mountains during inter-glacial periods, fragmenting the original continuous bird populations and forming "sky islands", which decrease in size from talamanca mountains towards the northwestern ranges. the sizes of such islands of available habitat determine the number of highland birds present in each mountain range. rev. biol. trop. 57 (suppl. 1): 333-349. epub 2009 november 30.
Reproductive activity of birds in a mangrove in Northwest Costa Rica
Barrantes,Gilbert;

The role of historical and local factors in determining species composition of the highland avifauna of Costa Rica and Western Panamá

Glacial conditions favored dispersal movements of bird species from the Andes, and from the Neartic region.

Abstract: it is necessary to consider the bioethical principles of beneficence and justice for giving individual health care to elderly women and for generating a health care system (or public policies) with an ethical approach where equity will be always present. in order to be fair and beneficent one must be efficient, which is achieved considering particular factors of the elderly: physical and mental health, quality of life, their real access to the health care services among others
50 a?os de clonación y ahora qué?
Abarca Barrantes,Carlos;
Medicina Legal de Costa Rica , 2003,
Abstract: in 1953 the first toad was cloned. now, fifty years later, it is very hard to be prohibit what's to come, because we are facing a new, ideal medicine a la carte, which serves interchangeable body parts and intracellular therapies. bioethics has understood the commerce and industry proposal, for that reason you can get a patent if you are using an artificial way to obtain an embryo, were you are not using an spermatozoa and an ovule. this is what we call artificial embryo, non reproductive clonation, or therapeutics clonation. in the reform proposed to the penal codice, in chapter v, we found a positive wave of thought about genetic manipulation and body parts commerce, like the german thinking style, and my style.
Clonación y biblia: una reflexión médico religiosa
Abarca Barrantes,Carlos;
Medicina Legal de Costa Rica , 2003,
Abstract: the science cloning is not new, it has its equivalence in the nature, and fifty years of practice in all kind of animals and vegetables. it is here right now and is to stay here for a long time to go, even if it is against the laws. nowadays, the new menace is to clone humans. god's eyes have been seeing into science, now it is the time for us to define the legal frame, which is the new tree of the good and evil: it can be used for human caprice or like a therapeutic, reproductive and alimentary instrument. is like water, it can calm the thirsty and also can make asphyxiate by submersion.

Abarca Barrantes,Carlos;
Medicina Legal de Costa Rica , 2004,
Abstract: when the forensic medic organism was created in 1965, forensic medicature was all ready part of the health ministry since 1949. the work of dr. solon nu?ez was redirected by dr. acosta guzman, to the supreme court of justice. the english paradigm for forensic medicature, was confronted against the german paradigm of dr. acosta for the forensic medic organism, this paradigm surpassed that of 1949. there were arrangements and agreements which had to be made, the new was not complete, nor perfect, nor absolute, but it obeyed to a social imaginary institution. the cooperation between both institutes was created in the places were forensic doctors from the judicial power were not available. when the legal medicine separates from the judicial investigative organism (o. i. j) the bridges of cooperation and friendship will over pass the difficulties with the new paradigm permitting to visualize the new kuhnian horizons, where the forensic sciences will be recreated and refreshed.
