The geographic space is a category of synthesis and convergence through which several processes involved in the life, environment and health of the population are expressed. One of the most important tasks for the evaluation of health situations is the development of indicators capable of finding and reflecting risk conditions for health and originated from adverse environmental and social conditions. However, the results that may be obtained from the spatial analysis of indicators are subjected to different choices made throughout these processes, that is, the selection of indicators of the information sources, of the level of analysis, of spatial units of reference, of spatial analysis methods and even the conception of geographical space. This paper discusses the effect of selection of data and scale aggregating units on the spatial analysis for the evaluation of health situations, using the distribution of mortality rates from esophageal cancer in the south of Brazil as an example
Diffusion of knowledge and urban legends: the case of internments due to sanitation conditions - DOI: 10.3395/reciis.v2i2.152en
Christovam Barcellos
RECIIS : Electronic Journal of Communication, Information & Innovation in Health , 2009,
Abstract: The statement that in Brazil “68% of the internments are due to the lack of sanitation” is diffused on the Web pages. The weight of the diseases related with water in the internment is clearly overestimated. If one considers just the hydric transmission diseases, this proportion falls to 4.8%. 204 websites of environment defense organizations and institutions, professional associations, universities and research centers quoting this statement were found upon a search on the Internet. The transmission standards of false information characterize this as one additional urban legend among those that impair the establishment of priorities. As the public policies are established from an accumulation of knowledge, the transmission of information in reports, scientific papers and texts on the Internet may represent the longing of pressure groups to alter priorities of the sanitation area.

As iniciativas e experiências em agroecologia como estratégia de desenvolvimento local em um assentamento de reforma agrária
Botton Barcellos,Sérgio;
Mundo agrario , 2011,
Abstract: this paper searches to understand which disputes and conflicts are around the consolidation of agroecology as one of the alternatives and initiatives of local development in a land reform settlement. thus, this paper, which consists of one of the results presented in the author's dissertation, aims to identify the disputes and conflicts that occur among local initiatives related to agroecology. santa rosa settlement is located in one of the densest areas in relation to rural settlements in rio grande do sul (rs) state. the research sources used to collect data and references to this paper were obtained in: researched bibliography in the writing of the author's dissertation; academic articles; and perceptions from the author's experiences in some land reform settlements. in this research it was considered that initiatives and actions in agroecology in the studied settlement can be strategic to make the social relations potential to the occurrence of experiences in local development different from those that occur alongside agribusiness
Um estado emotivo: representa??o da gravidez na mídia
Rezende, Claudia Barcellos;
Cadernos Pagu , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-83332011000100012
Abstract: this article examines the representations of pregnancy in the magazine revista da gestante, particularly the notion that this is a process that may be to a large extent controlled by pregnant women. in this magazine, articles present a prescriptive discourse, with "tips" to a "happy and calm" pregnancy. they focus on the idea that pregnancy has an emotional nature, especially due to the frequent sentiments of fear and anxiety. by analyzing these emotions, i argue that pregnant women are seen as autonomous agents who are relatively isolated from their social circle, except for their relations with medical specialists. self control during pregnancy, thus, becomes an issue, reinforcing a wider concern with emotional control common in modern western societies.
Sintomas psicóticos e cognitivos associados à busca de tratamento por dependentes de substancias: um estudo qualitativo
Fontanella, Bruno José Barcellos;
Jornal Brasileiro de Psiquiatria , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0047-20852010000200010
Abstract: during the last few decades it is aimed to better understand the process underlying treatment seeking behavior by harmful or dependent psychoactive substances users. the currently proposed models are mainly based on the epidemiological analysis of certain number of individual characteristics, as they have the power to influence this behavior of readiness for treatment. objectives: to interpret and understand possible personal meanings associated with psychopathological disorders and how they can be related to treatment seeking behavior, as described by the patients themselves. method: qualitative study conducted on an intentional sample of 13 substance dependents seeking for formal treatment; in-depth semi-structured interviews. results: the participants spontaneously reported: shape, course and content thought disturbances and sense of reality, sensory perception disorders, and attention, memory and language deficits. the sample's participants seemed to relate these disorders to the treatment seeking motivations. the data were interpreted considering the interviewees' psycho-cultural context their clinical presentations (dependence or withdrawal syndromes and comorbidities). conclusions: qualitative research contribute to improve current models of substance dependents' treatment seeking behavior. the clinical investigation of psychopathologic disorders seem to motivate patients to specific treatments of dysfunctional use of substances.
Radiologia do cancer de pulm?o
Jornal de Pneumologia , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-35862002000200006
Abstract: the evaluation of patients with lung cancer involves not only the detection of enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes and the delineation of the relationship between the primary lesion with the mediastinal structures but also the determination of extra thoracic metastases. this article reviews the major imaging techniques that are currently used to stage bronchogenic carcinoma. radiologic studies have made an important impact on the evaluation of the solitary pulmonary nodule. mediastinal staging coupled with imaging methods is not accurate. ct and mr imaging of the chest and abdomen are often used to stage a known or suspected lung carcinoma. despite their limitations, ct and mr prevent unnecessary thoracotomies and invasive procedures. mr can be helpful in the evaluation of parts of the chest not well shown on ct. pet-fdg imaging complements chest ct in the noninvasive evaluation of lung cancer and strategies for its use merit further investigation.
