Laboratory and field evaluation of an oviposition trap for Culex quinquefasciatus(Diptera: Culicidae)
Barbosa, Rosangela MR;Souto, Antonio;Eiras, Alvaro E;Regis, Lêda;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762007005000058
Abstract: an ovitrap (br-ovt) based on physical and chemical stimuli for attracting gravid culex quinquefasciatus (diptera: culicidae) females was developed and evaluated under laboratory and field conditions. attractants were assayed using alternative chamber bioassays prior to being used in the br-ovt oviposition trap. a significant preference of gravid females for sites containing conspecific egg rafts was observed, as a response to the natural oviposition pheromone, as well as for sites treated with the synthetic pheromone erythro-6-acetoxy-5-hexadecanolide. five- to 20-day old grass infusion was strongly attractive to gravid females for laying eggs. on the other hand, entomopathogenic bacillus sphaericus (bs) did not influence the choice of an oviposition site when used in combination with grass infusion and can therefore be used as a larvicide in ovitraps. results from field trials showed that the br-ovt with grass infusion and with or without bs works as a preferred oviposition site for cx. quinquefasciatus. the br-ovt was more effective for egg collection when placed indoors and comparison with the number of egg rafts laid in cesspits over 40 days indicates that this very simple ovitrap may be a useful tool for monitoring populations of the most important of the vectors of bancroftian filariasis.

Abstract: this is the first report of the presence of aedes albopictus in the native rain forest, near the urban area of recife (state of pernambuco, brazil). adult female mosquitoes were collected using human bait. mosquitoes in aquatic stages were looked for in treeholes, bamboos, bromeliads and old tires. the existence of ae. albopictus in the metropolitan area of recife poses a potential risk for the interaction of this mosquito species with the urban human population.
Monitoring temporal fluctuations of Culex quinquefasciatus using oviposition traps containing attractant and larvicide in an urban environment in Recife, Brazil
Barbosa, Rosangela Maria Rodrigues;Regis, Lêda Narcisa;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762011000400011
Abstract: the use of attractants and larvicides in oviposition traps is of practical interest for the surveillance and control of urban mosquitoes. in addition to increasing the safety of the traps, this combination is essential for an attract-and-kill control strategy based on trapping mosquito eggs. the combination of bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (bti) and grass infusion (gi) vs. gi alone were tested for their ability to attract in paired br-ovt traps in the backyards of 10 houses in recife, brazil, for a period of 45 days. results show that females prefer to oviposit in traps containing bti (363 compared with 251 egg rafts over 45 days). results from a one-year trial on the efficacy of br-ovt traps loaded with gi and bti as a sampling tool to monitor temporal fluctuations in the population densities of culex quinquefasciatus in an urban environment are also reported. from december 2006-january 2007, one trap per home was installed and maintained for 348 consecutive days in 134-151 houses located in three urban blocks. throughout the one-year field trial a total of 43,151 culex egg rafts were collected in the traps. the data show that br-ovt loaded with gi and bti is sensitive enough to demonstrate continuous reproductive activity of cux. quinquefasciatus in the study area throughout the year and to monitor temporal fluctuations in population density.

Abstract: the breast cancer is a disease that affects especially women, and according to statistics, this is increasing with certain frequency in western country and it has been concerning the scientific society. this disease is associated with various factors of risk, and diets have being considered a factor that has promoted breast cancer. food rich in functional substances has drawn attention, because phytoestrogens have showed, through experimental studies, beneficial properties for health and appeared to contribute for the decrease of breast cancer risk. food with flaxseed has been object of study, because it contains substances called chemoprotective and its chemistry structure resembles human estrogens and competes with its link site. according to the experimental studies made in animals and humans, flaxseed is rich in lignans and other components, that seem to have weak estrogenic/antiestrogenic effect showing to exert influence in the decreasing of breast cancer risk.

Nutrition Journal , 2011, DOI: 10.1186/1475-2891-10-79
Abstract: The development of a dietary availability patterns according to geographic regions in Brazil.The 2002-2003 Brazilian Household Budget Survey was conducted in 48,470 households. Dietary availability patterns were identified by Principal Component Analysis using as a unit of analysis the survey's Primary Sampling Units (PSUs) and purchased amounts for 21 food groups. Each of the extracted dietary availability patterns was regressed on socioeconomics categories.There were no differences in dietary availability patterns between urban and rural areas. In all regions, a rice and beans pattern was identified. This pattern explained 15% to 28% of the variance dependent on the region of the country. In South, Southeast and Midwest regions, a mixed pattern including at least 10 food groups explaining 8% to 16% of the variance. In the North region (Amazon forest included) the first pattern was based on fish and nuts and then it was designed as regional pattern. In multiple linear regression the rice and beans pattern was associated with the presence of adolescents in the households, except for North region, whereas the presence of adolescents was associated with the Regional pattern. A mixed patterns were associated with a higher income and education (p < 0.05), except in the South region.The rice and beans and regional dietary availability patterns, both considered healthy eating patterns are still important in the country. Brazil has taken many actions to improve nutrition as part of their public health policies, the data of the Household Budget Survey could help to recognize the different food choices in the large regions of the country.Identification of dietary patterns has been widely used to classify individuals and communities according to healthy and unhealthy diets, overcoming many restricted characteristic of traditional analyses focused on nutrient intake [1].Few studies in Brazil have identified dietary patterns, and all of them were limited to local populations or

Mediano, Mauro Felippe Felix;Barbosa, José Silvio de Oliveira;Sichieri, Rosely;Pereira, Rosangela Alves;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia & Metabologia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27302007000600015
Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of exercise on insulin sensitivity, lipid metabolism and weight loss in women submitted to a weight reduction program. the study consisted in a clinical trial including 40 obese women (bmi 30.41 to 53.29 kg/m2), 20 in each group. both groups received nutritional counseling and psychological support. the intervention group participated in supervised exercise three times per week for 20 weeks. for the anthropometric measurements, which were taken at three times, the linear mixed modeling procedure showed a reduction of 2 kg in body mass (p = 0.02) and 0.88 kg/m2 in the body mass index (p = 0.02) in intervention group compared with controls after 20 weeks of treatment. we did not detect significant differences between the two groups for body fat location (waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio), serum lipoprotein profile, and insulin sensitivity evaluated by homa-ir. serum levels of free fatty acids significantly increased in the intervention group compared with controls (difference between groups = 0,30 mmol/l; p = 0,002). the addition of physical exercise in a weight reduction program promoted greater weight loss, increased free fatty acids, but did not alter insulin sensitivity in obese women.
