Evolution and the nature of time

Abstract: the concept of time is critical in evolutionary thought, but rarely has it been considered as an object of theoretical research by evolutionary biologists. evolution is an organism's possibility of access to the future; in other words, evolutionary reward is paid out as increased time. replicating entities are granted time, but for them, time only serves to allow replication and evolution, and to further expand the frontier of time. the present review discusses the possible influence of considering time not as a pure dimension (or an a priori intuitive condition of human experience) but as an object in itself. at least as a metaphor, time can be considered as a self-replicating entity rooted in physical (including biological) beings, with the result of producing dimensional time. time self-replication forces beings to replicate, which, in turn, further sustains the replication of time. in that sense, time-replication may constitute the driving force, i.e., the basic engine, providing directional energy to the evolutionary process. the philosophical roots, caveats, and perspectives of this hypothesis are presented here. the metaphor of replicating-time plays with the possibility of viewing time not as a merely regulatory component of scientific inquiry but instead, as a real and creative constituent of nature and, for this reason, an object worthy of research in the natural sciences.

Abstract: this paper introduces some central issues addressing the relationship between educational practices and developmental processes in the context of socio-cultural approaches. it shows the peculiarities of the specific weight of school practices and their impact on development and its differential valuation under what wertsch has called the problem of "genetic hierarchies" in the characterization of development. the question about the increasingly decontextualized use of semiotic tools, considered one of the central vectors in development occurred in school settings, is discussed. finally, we examine some practical implications that these discussions yield for the intervention in the so-called massive "school failure".

Abstract: this article has as a main objective analyze the influence of electoral process (presidential) in time 1 (2002), in brazil in the constitution or not of social capital in time 2 (2006), both in the institutional dimension, as well as its informal dimension. based upon electoral data collected by eseb (electoral studies in brazil) we postulate the hypothesis that in economic and ethical adverse conditions, formal procedures do not influence the citizens formation of social capital and political empowerment, instead it generates negative predispositions in relation to politics. in these circumstances it prevails untrusty political culture, allowing the prevalence of factors in the electoral process. in this case, in the election and reelection of lula in 2002 and 2006 respectively.

Abstract: in this article we analyse the theoretical distortions that emerge when the brazilian democratic construction process is analyzed utilizing exclusively the institutional approach. this approach does not explain the ambiguities between the emergence of a market economy and a passive and distrustful society of their elected officials and political institutions. in that context, adverse political conditions are produced that do not contribute for the democratic strengthening and the institutionalization of a participative political culture. the question to answer is: is it possible to develop political capacity of citizens through social capital as an alternative mechanism of citizenship? the results of the data examined in this paper are not too convincing.

Abstract: this article examines the relationship between democracy, political culture and social capital in brazil. the topic is approached comprehensively, based on the belief that the above concepts are in permanent interaction. in the brazilian case, however, it is possible to identify several factors that have historically had a impact on the configuration of a type of political culture, hybrid in nature, that brings together attitudes that are favorable to democracy and negative toward political institutions. it is argued that this problem is neither temporary nor conjunctural; rather, it is structural and poses difficulties for strengthening democracy. within such a scenario the development of social capital would increase citizens' power, in theory and practice, allowing them wider participation in the political arena. data used here are based on quantitative and qualitative research carried out in the state of rio grande do sul, between 1974 and 2000. study results suggest that brazilians are weak on ability to cooperate, which may explain low rates of political participation and consequent democratic instability.

Abstract: exame de alguns dos fatores histórico-estruturais, cuja influência tem se mostrado significativa na estrutura??o de padr?es de atitudes e comportamentos de desconfian?a e desencanto da sociedade brasileira em rela??o às suas institui??es políticas e, principalmente, aos políticos. os resultados do estudo indicam que a existência de fatores dessa natureza acabam por descaracterizar a democracia no país e permitem o surgimento de formas antidemocráticas de governar.

Abstract: El trabajo propone discutir desde una perspectiva psicoeducativa el lugar que se ha otorgado al problema de la transmisión de conocimientos o saberes dentro de las concepciones constructivistas y situacionales. Se sitúa el problema en el campo de la psicología del desarrollo y educacional, intentando precisar algunos problemas que se juzga de relevancia para comprender las prácticas escolares. En tal sentido se se alan algunas paradojas en las que, al parecer, quedamos inmersos al adoptar perspectivas constructivistas ingenuas o poco atentas al carácter político-cultural de las prácticas escolares y, a su vez, se intenta mostrar cómo las perspectivas contextualistas o situacionales, en algunas de sus variantes, permiten abrir una agenda crítica de problemas sobre el desarrollo, la diversidad y las prácticas escolares. Se intentará mostrar que las críticas derivadas de las posiciones constructivistas en educación, en coincidencia con los desarrollos de las posiciones situacionales implican una crítica profunda al formato escolar moderno y sus supuestos.

Abstract: Este artigo examina a rela o entre democracia, cultura política e capital social no Brasil. O tema é abordado de maneira compreensiva, pois acredita-se que esses conceitos interagem permanentemente. No caso brasileiro é possível, entretanto, identificar alguns fatores que historicamente têm incidido na configura o de um tipo de cultura política, de caráter híbrido, que mistura posturas favoráveis à democracia e predisposi es negativas em rela o às institui es políticas. Esse mal-estar, argumenta-se, n o é conjuntural nem temporário, mas de caráter estrutural e danoso para o fortalecimento democrático. Em tal cenário o desenvolvimento do capital social, aumentaria, prática e teoricamente, o poder dos cidad os permitindo-lhes maior inser o e participa o na arena política. S o utilizados como fonte dados de pesquisas qualitativas e quantitativas coletados no Rio Grande do Sul no período de 1974 a 2000. Os resultados do estudo sugerem uma ausência de capacidade cooperativa entre os brasileiros, o que poderia explicar os déficits de participa o política e a conseqüente instabilidade democrática.
