Synthesis, Characterization and Catalytic Property of Polymer Protected Gold and Silver Nanoparticles
Baigaziyeva E.K.,Kudaibergenov S.E.,Yesmurzayeva N.N.,Nurakhmetova Zh.A.
Proceedings of the International Conference Nanomaterials : Applications and Properties , 2013,
Abstract: Gold (AuNPs) and silver (AgNPs) nanoparticles protected by hydrophilic polymers were prepared by “one-pot” synthetic protocol. Absorption spectra, size, morphology and structure of obtained nanoparticles were investigated by UV-Vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The catalytic activity of polymer-protected AuNPs and AgNPs supported on the surface of aluminum oxide was evaluated with respect to decomposition of hydrogen peroxide.
Attempting a dialectical reconciliation of the concept truth in the objectivism of evangelical christianity and the relativism of postmodernism
E.K Foshaugen
Acta Theologica , 2004,
Abstract: The Church faces a number of challenges concerning the sociological impact postmodernism is having on society. One significant area that has been profoundly disputed is the epistemological content of the concept of truth. Evangelical Christians believe in Objectivism: the conviction that there exists some ahistorical source, foundation or framework to which we can appeal to in determining the substance and nature of truth, knowledge, reality, right or wrong — and it is independent and external to personal experience or thinking. However, many no longer believe in absolute truth but in relativism. Relativism is the denial that there exists such an ahistorical source or foundation that we can appeal to. Truth, knowledge, reality, right and wrong are all concepts that are relative to a specific conceptual scheme, framework, or paradigm founded in a society, religion and culture. This article represents an endeavour to dialogically reunite the two perspectives by arguing for the seeking of the “truths” in both perspectives. God is Objective Truth and has become involved in history: in the existential; in the material setting of our relative and infallible thoughts and the slanted interpretative experiences of the Triune God and life. The synthesis will be an affirmation that for Christians Truth is discovered and revealed in fellowship within community. And members of the Body of Christ are first and finally called to reveal and demonstrate truth to the world — in their unity.
Preventing neglected club feet in Uganda: A challenge to the health workers with limited resources
E.K Naddumba
East African Orthopaedic Journal , 2009,
Abstract: Neglected clubfoot deformity is one of the commonest musculoskeletal disorders in Uganda. It is as a result of failure to provide treatment to the congenital clubfoot deformity during the infancy period due to limited resources. The incidence of clubfoot in Uganda is estimated to be 1/1000,like elsewhere, globally. The population of neglected clubfeet in the country is approximately 10,000. There are 20 orthopaedic surgeons in the country with a population of 28 million. The treatment in the past has been surgical after failed conservative treatment. With limited resources it is not possible to attend to all clubfeet in the country that would require surgery. The Social economic impact of failure to treat this deformity is great resulting in poverty to the families, and the country. The Uganda Sustainable Clubfoot Project has been established in the country whose Goal is to contribute to elimination of the neglected clubfoot in the country. The methodology is discussed in the presentation with a focus for developing capacity for early detection, treatment using the ponseti method, raising awareness of the health workers and the public, and political support.
Records of assassin bug species (reduviidae, heteroptera) reported biting man
E.K. Hartwig
Koedoe : African Protected Area Conservation and Science , 1977, DOI: 10.4102/koedoe.v20i1.935
Abstract: In southern Africa Acanthaspis obscura Stal, Pirates conspurcatus Distant, Rhinocoris segmentarius (Germar) and Panto-feistes pnnceps Stal intlict painful bites on humans. Serious consequences can develop. This is unknown to the public in general. Adult A. obscura and P. conspurcatus are responsible for the greatest number of bites because they are positively phototropic. R, segmentarius is not attracted to light but is the most common local species. Bites happen accidentally and could largely be avoided if the bugs could be recognized. The first three species have a wide distribution. Various insects are preyed on. The R. segmentarius female can lay 358 fertile eggs in six batches over a period of 77 days without copulating once in this period. Adults are most active in mid-summer although found throughout the year. These three species are abundant in some years and scarce in others. Preventive measures include screening homes and decoy lights. Control involves spraying with carbaryl.

Effect of Maternal Indices on Fetal Outcomes in a Primary Health Care Centre
E.K. Nwangwa
Asian Journal of Medical Sciences , 2012,
Abstract: It is well known that perinatal and neonatal morbidity and mortality rates are functions of birth weight. In the present study. the effects of maternal indices on the fetal outcome were investigated. A total of Two hundred consenting pregnant mothers who delivered between 2007-2010 in a primary Health Care centre in Delta State, Nigeria were recruited for the study. Those who had chronic ailments or pregnancy complications were excluded from this study. The data collected includes maternal weight. maternal age, gestational age, sex of baby. The result shows a significant (p<0.05) relationship between the mean maternal weight, mean maternal age and mean gestational age with the mean birth weight and also a non significant relationship between the sex of babies with birth weight and gestational length. Therefore, it is advocated that special attention should be given to pregnant women during antenatal care/prenatal care in order to minimize or eliminate the complications associated with low birth weight delivery.
A case of caprine perineal squamous cell carcinoma in Botswana : case report
E.K. Baipoledi
Journal of the South African Veterinary Association , 2012, DOI: 10.4102/jsava.v72i3.642
Abstract: Squamous cell carcinoma of the perineal region of goats is described for the first time in Botswana. The tumour was irregularly shaped, cauliflower-like and ulcerated. The exposed surface had an unpleasant smell and was covered by a black keratinous exudate. Histopathologically the lesions were compatible with previous descriptions.

Effects of Garcinia kola on the Lipid Profile of Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Wistar Rats
E.K. Nwangwa
British Journal of Pharmacology and Toxicology , 2012,
Abstract: In this study, the effects of Garcinia kola on the lipid profile of alloxan-induced diabetic Wistar rats were studied. A total of twenty four (24) albino rats of wistar strain weighing between 100-150 g were made diabetic by single freshly prepared intraperitoneal injection of 150 mg/dL of alloxan monohydrate. Eight (8) weeks after confirmation of diabetes, the rats were randomly divided into four (4) experimental groups (n = 6). Group I (Control) rats were treated with 1ml of 5% ethanol, Group II ( diabetic rats received 1ml of 5% ethanol), Group III (Diabetic rats treated with 400 mg/kg of extract of Garcinia kola and 1mL of 5% ethanol) and Group IV, (Diabetic rats received 400 mg/kg of extract of Garcinia kola, 1 mL of 5% ethanol and 1 mL of honey). The extracts were administered twice daily for four (4) weeks. The blood glucose level and Lipid profile was analysed. The results shows that Garcinia kola has a significant (p<0.05) hypoglycaemic effect on diabetic rats and significantly (p<0.05) decreased the level of Total Cholesterol (TC), Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and Triglyceride (TG) and significantly (p<0.05) increase in the level of High density lipoprotein compared with the diabetic non-treated group. These findings if applied can be of help in the management of diabetic patients.
