Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) for Miniature Hydroponic Lettuce  [PDF]
Kent Kobayashi, Teresita Amore, Michelle Lazaro
Optics and Photonics Journal (OPJ) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/opj.2013.31012
Abstract:

There is growing concern about food safety, environmental impact, and efficient energy usage in agricultural production systems. Producing lettuce under artificial lighting could be a solution addressing these concerns. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) offer the advantages of a narrow light spectrum, low power consumption, and little heat production. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of different light sources on the growth of miniature “Tom Thumb” butterhead lettuce in a non-circulating hydroponic system. Lettuce seedlings, started in Oasis Horticubes, were transferred to net pots in containers with a hydroponic nutrient solution. The lettuce was grown in a lab under three light treatments—blue LEDs, red LEDs, and fluorescent lights. At the end of the study, fluorescent lights resulted in greater root dry weight than blue LEDs and red LEDs. Total plant dry weight under fluorescent lights was greater than under red LEDs. There were no significant differences in shoot dry weight and plant height among the treatments. Percent partitioning of dry weight to shoots was greatest with red LEDs, followed by blue LEDS, and fluorescent lights. Percent partitioning of dry weight to roots was greatest with fluorescent lights, followed by blue LEDS, and red LEDs. Leaf chlorophyll content was greater under blue LEDs and fluorescent lights than red LEDs. The pH of the nutrient solution of the blue LED and the fluorescent light treatments were greater than the red LED treatment. Electrical conductivity of the nutrient solution of the fluorescent light treatment was greater than the blue LED treatment and the red LED treatment. In conclusion, LEDs could provide an alternative lighting source for miniature lettuce production.

Díaz Pumará,Teresita;
T?3picos , 2008,
Abstract: 1) the aim of the paper is to trace what we call oblivion in the thought of martin heidegger: the question about the nature and the natural being of the dasein. two questions are raised: does heidegger get trapped in the nature-spirit opposition? is the dasein sufficiently and satisfactorily though of in its factuality, if the natural dimension of its being has been silenced? 2) within representative thought: the world in the original dimension in which the dasein is rooted and in which the opening up of being and the prior self-offering of the intra-mundane entity as a tool (zeug) takes place. 3) nature in being and time: nature as being-at-hand and nature of the surrounding world. 4) nature as organic or animal life in fundamental concepts of metaphysics: the animal deprived of a world and the question about human animality. 5) nature as earth in "the origin of the work of art". 6) two alternatives to think upon nature from [the perspective of] an ontology of negativity: maurice merleau-ponty and georges bataille. 7) conclusion: heidegger's "oblivion" implies the risk of getting trapped in the classical nature-spirit opposition and of not being able to unfold every dimension of factuality.

Quiles,Cristina; Chá,Teresita;
Orientaci?3n y sociedad , 2002,
Abstract: this work belongs to one of the activities that are carried out in the vocational and occupational guidance center (v.o.g.c.) of the faculty of humanities and educational sciences at the l.p.n.u. in the year 1994 the vocational/occupational guidance programme for municipalities was created, destined for work with adolescents who are attending their last year at secondary schools in the interior of the province of buenos aires . the programme aims at fostering the development of spaces for reflection related to the educational/working projects of the adolescents who are close to entering university. the proposal is based on the methodology of work groups, in the journeys preoccupations are sheared, the worries and fears experienced by the students are shared with their hosts, possibilities are used as ground for construction, dealing both with aspects of their current situation and their future possibilities. from the analysis of the group productions collected throughout these years, we have developed a student's profile that - although it resembles the one obtained from local adolescents- adds new questions and points of view, thus increasing the complexity of the balance of forces related to the question of having to make a choice.

Méndez Olave, Teresita;
Bolema: Boletim de Educa??o Matemática , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-636X2012000400013
Abstract: this article is a proposal for the teaching and learning of factoring quadratic polynomials, based regine douady′s theoretical frameworks regarding the tool-object dialectic. it highlights the role of combined mathematical frameworks as a means to access... "different formulations of a problem which, without necessarily being equivalent, allow a new approach to the difficulties encountered and the staging of tools and techniques that were not imposed in the first formulation." from this perspective, an axiomatic system is constructed in a figural context in which primary objects are defined, and relationships are established between them, leading to definitions and theorems of a mathematical theory within this framework. rules are proposed for the operation of the primary objects and a game is described in which the factoring is operationalized using this framework. the game becomes the vehicle for understanding the difficult relations of the objects of factoring in the algebraic framework. this form of educational work develops cognitive and metacognitive skills in students who discover and describe the factorization properties, establish the algebraic relations between the coefficients of the polynomial and the factors that factored expression, developing a mathematical activity.
