Clinical characteristics of 41 patients with intractable asthma

Abstract: Objective To explore the clinical characteristics of intractable asthma,and to provide new knowledge for diagnosis and treatment of the disease.Methods Forty one patients with intractable asthma,admitted to the Institute of Respiratory Disease,Xinqiao Hospital of Third Military Medical University from Jan.2009 to Dec.2010,were included in present study.Spirometry tests were performed for all the 41 patients.Cell classification and counting were done in the induced sputum of 37 patients,and 34 patients underwent high-resolution chest computed tomography(HRCT).Results Incomplete reversibility of airflow obstruction(FEV1/FVC < 70% after inhalation of bronchodilator) presented in all the 41 patients with intractble asthma.Of 37 patients tested,25(67.6%) showed increased eosinophils in induced sputum( > 0.03 of the total cells),13(35.1%) and increased neutrophils( > 0.61 of total cells),6(16.2%) showed increased both eosinophils and neutrophils,and only that of one patient showed normal percentage of the eosinophils and neutrophils.Chest HRCT of 34 patients showed thickening of bronchial wall in visible segment in 28 cases(82.3%),and in 22 cases(64.7%) thickening of bronchial wall in secondary segments was accompanied with narrowed bronchus lumen,cylindrical bronchiectasis was predominant in 7 patients,and centrilobular emphysema was seen in 5 patients.Conclusion Airway remodeling,incomplete reversibility of airflow obstruction,airway inflammation appear to be the major clinical characteristics of intractable asthma.Combined use of chest HRCT,spirometry test,and cellular analysis of induced sputum may be helpful for identifying intractable asthma,and they provide the basis for individualized strategies to manage the disease.
J/psi Production in an Equilibrating Partonic System

Abstract: Any color singlet or octet ccbar pair is created at short distances and then expands to a full size of J/psi. Such a dynamical evolution process is included here in calculations for the J/psi number distribution as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity in central Au-Au collisions at both RHIC and LHC energies. The ccbar pairs are produced in the initial collision and in the partonic system during the prethermal and thermal stages through the partonic channels ab to ccbar [{2S+1}L_J] and ab to ccbar [{2S+1}L_J]x, and then they dissociate in the latter two stages. Dissociation of ccbar in the medium occurs via two reactions: (a) color singlet ccbar plus a gluon turns to color octet ccbar, (b) color octet ccbar plus a gluon persists as color octet. There are modest yields of ccbar in the prethermal stage at RHIC energy and through the reactions ab to ccbar [{2S+1}L_J] at LHC energy for partons with large average momentum in the prethermal stage at both collider energies and in the thermal stage at LHC energy. Production from the partonic system competes with the suppression of the initial yield in the deconfined medium. Consequently, a bulge within -1.5
Early thermalization of quark-gluon matter by elastic 3-to-3 scattering

Abstract: The early thermalization is crucial to the quark-gluon plasma as a perfect liquid and results from many-body scattering. We calculate squared amplitudes for elastic parton-parton-parton scattering in perturbative QCD. Transport equations with the squared amplitudes are established and solved to obtain the thermalization time of initially produced quark-gluon matter and the initial temperature of quark-gluon plasma. We find that the thermalization times of quark matter and gluon matter are different.

Nutritional management of newborn infants: Practical guidelines

Abstract: The requirements of growth and organ development create a challenge in nutritional management of newborn infants, especially premature newborn and intestinal-failure infants. Since their feeding may increase the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis, some high-risk infants receive a small volume of feeding or parenteral nutrition (PN) without enteral feeding. This review summarizes the current research progress in the nutritional management of newborn infants. Searches of MEDLINE (1998-2007), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (The Cochrane Library, Issue 3, 2007), abstracts and conference proceedings, references from relevant publications in the English language were performed, showing that breast milk is the preferred source of nutrients for enteral feeding of newborn infants. The number of nutrients found in human milk was recommended as a guideline in establishing the minimum and maximum levels in infant formulas. The fear of necrotizing enterocolitis and feeding intolerance are the major factors limiting the use of the enteral route as the primary means of nourishing premature infants. PN may help to meet many of the nutritional needs of these infants, but has significant detrimental side effects. Trophic feedings (small volume of feeding given at the same rate for at least 5 d) during PN are a strategy to enhance the feeding tolerance and decrease the side effects of PN and the time to achieve full feeding. Human milk is a key component of any strategy for enteral nutrition of all infants. However, the amounts of calcium, phosphorus, zinc and other nutrients are inadequate to meet the needs of the very low birth weight (VLBW) infants during growth. Therefore, safe and effective means to fortify human milk are essential to the care of VLBW infants.

Abstract: The poverty student’s work is an important part in constructing a harmonious campus. How to make the best use of the work-study program requires us to view the issue from a long-term perspective. Abstract: Thermalization of quark-gluon matter is studied with a transport equation that includes contributions of 2-to-2 and 3-to-3 elastic scatterings. Thermalization time is related to the squared amplitudes for the elastic scatterings that are calculated in perturbative QCD.
