Neural Plasticity , 2003, DOI: 10.1155/np.2003.279
Abstract: To construct a model of relapse of drug abuse in mice, the induction, we evaluated the extinction and reinstatement of morphine-induced place preference. In Experiment 1, we examined the effects of morphine (0, 2, 3, 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg/kg) in the conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm. Mice showed CPP with 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg/kg. In Experiment 2, we evaluated the effects of two different extinction procedures. After conditioning with 40 mg/kg of morphine, the mice underwent daily extinction sessions of 60 or 15 min of duration. CPP was extinguished after seven and nine sessions, respectively. In Experiment 3, we tested the reinstating effects of several priming doses of morphine. Mice were conditioned with 40 mg/kg of morphine and underwent the daily 15 min extinction sessions until CPP was no longer evident. Then, the effects of morphine (0, 2, 3, 5, 10, 20, 40 mg/kg, i.p.) were evaluated. CPP was reinstated by doses from 5 mg/kg upward. The results show that morphine priming injections are effective in reactivating opiateseeking behavior in mice, and thus, the CPP paradigm might be useful to investigate the mechanisms underlying relapse of drug abuse.

Abstract: we developed a management model for maintenance of hospital radiological x-ray equipment. the model was implemented in several steps including visits to other hospitals where equipment management is also done, collaboration work with "funda??o oswaldo cruz" for the realization of courses and a training program for the hospital electronic technicians, organization of a small library with the schemes of the radiological equipment in use at "hospital universitário clementino fraga filho", rio de janeiro, brazil, development of a management software using a database from access (microsoft windows) and evaluation of the performance of the radiological equipment. the implementation of a new routine for equipment maintenance fulfils the need for reducing repair delay and costs, improving image quality in radiodiagnosis services, and complying with resolution 453/98 of the brazilian ministry of health.

The density of states and band gap of liquid water by sequential Monte Carlo/Quantum mechanics calculations

Abstract: electronic properties of liquid water were investigated by sequential monte carlo/quantum mechanics calculations. the density of states (dos) and homo-lumo gap (eg) of liquid water have been determined by hartree-fock and density functional theory (dft) calculations. the quantum mechanical calculations were carried out over uncorrelated supermolecular structures generated by the monte carlo simulations. the dft calculations were performed with a modified b3lyp exchange-correlation functional proposed by abu-awwad and politzer which was parametrized to reproduce valence orbital energies in agreement with experimental ionization potentials of the water molecule. we have analyzed the dependence of the dos and homo-lumo gap on the number of water molecules and on surface effects. our prediction for eg is 6:5 ± 0:5 ev in good agreement with a recent experimental prediction of 6.9 ev.

Abstract: objective: quality of labor care has been recognized as a major factor for prevention of obstetric complications which can lead to maternal, perinatal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. the objective of the study was to assess quality of labor care by gestational risk and type of health provider. methods: observational, cross-sectional study of labor care provided to 574 pregnant women. stratified sampling in 20 unified health system maternity hospitals in rio de janeiro, brazil, was carried out between 1999 and 2001. quality of labor care was assessed by gestational risk and type of health provider. statistical analyses consisted of variance analysis and the analysis of difference between proportions. results: of all women studied, 29.6% were classified at obstetric risk. although hypertension is the main cause of maternal death in brazil, 71.6% did not have their prelabor blood pressure measured. five measures were taken on average per parturient and the lowest rate was found in privately insured hospitals (average of 2.9). as to humanized health care, only 21.4% of the parturients had an accompanying person on their side during labor, 75.7% were submitted to intravenous hydration and 24.3% to amniotomy. the single care-related factor that varied by obstetric risk was frequency of blood pressure measures: high-risk parturients had their blood pressure measured twice as much as those low-risk women (mean 0.36 vs. 0.18 measures/h, p=0.006). conclusions: in general, low-risk parturients were submitted to unnecessary interventions while high-risk women did not receive adequate care. as a result, there are poor perinatal outcomes, high cesarean rates and high maternal mortality rates, which do not reflect health care investments and technology available.

Anisotropy in Rupture Lines of Paper Sheets
I. L. Menezes-Sobrinho,M. S. Couto,I. R. B. Ribeiro
Physics , 2005, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevE.71.066121
Abstract: We have experimentally investigated the fracture process in paper samples submitted to a uniaxial force. Five types of paper sheets (newsprint, towel, sulfite, silk and couche papers) were fractured along two orthogonal orientations. In order to characterize the rupture lines of the paper sheets we utilized the Hurst exponent. Our results indicate a dependence of the Hurst exponent on the orientation of the paper sheets for samples of newsprint and, probably, towel and silk papers. For the other types of paper the Hurst exponent does not depend on the direction of crack propagation.
