Abstract: Infections at the surgical site delays wound healing, prolongs hospitalization, increases morbidity and the overall costs. These issues are compounded when the postoperative infection is culture-negative. This article outlines the general principles of managing postoperative surgical site infections, with an emphasis on culture-negative infections. Practical issues, in the absence of positive culture are discussed, together with practice points to minimize the incidence of culture-negative surgical site infections.

Abstract: Aluminum 6061 alloy metal matrix composites (MMCs) reinforced with four different weight fractions of (Al2O3 + red mud) particles up to 10 wt% were fabricated by a vortex method. The effects of reinforcement content on the mechanical properties of the composites such as hardness and tensile strength were investigated. The density measurements showed that the samples contained little porosity, and the amount of porosity in the composites increased with increasing weight fraction of particles. Scanning electron microscopic observations of the microstructures revealed that the dispersion of the particles was uniform with small clusters at some places and porosity. The results showed that the hardness and the tensile strength of the composites increased with increasing weight fraction of particles.

Abstract: Thousands of annual employment opportunities are available in the Governments of India and states like former Andhra Pradesh, and the public and financial sectors. This paper summarizes the types of jobs available for fresh graduates by broad categories. It also explores emerging employment opportunities in India in specific selected public sectors, and the economy in general. It briefly outlines the minimum educational qualifications, entrance/application procedures, etc. for jobs in central and state governments. These are based on the relevant information available from various secondary sources and on relevant internet sites and public advertisements. It concludes with the suggestion that fresh graduates in India, encouraged by their teachers and employment counsellors, may need to explore more sustainable employment in government and public sectors.
Trends in surgical site infections in general surgery at a tertiary hospital

Abstract: Surgical site infections (SSI) are a preventable cause of hospital acquired infections, which increase morbidity and mortality. This is a retrospective analysis of SSIs in patients undergoing general surgical and gastroenterological operations. The observed incidence was 3.63%. The commonest procedures resulting in SSI were those who underwent laparotomy for bowel resections. The commonest organisms isolated were Enterococcus and Klebsiella species. SSIs can be further reduced by strict adherence to SSI prevention guide-lines.
Generalized Demazure modules and fusion products

Abstract: Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a finite-dimensional complex simple Lie algebra with highest root $\theta$ and let $\mathfrak{g}[t]$ be the corresponding current algebra. In this paper, we consider $\mathfrak{g}[t]$-stable Demazure modules of integrable highest weight representations of the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}$. We prove that the fusion product of Demazure modules of a given level with a single Demazure module of a different level and with highest weight a multiple of $\theta$ is a generalized Demazure module, and also give explicit defining relations. This also proves that the fusion product of such Demazure modules is independent of the parameters. As a consequence, we obtain the defining relations for a special family of generalized Demazure modules.

Abstract: Electrical transport properties such as conductivity (σ) and thermo electric power (S) of Cadmium substituted Nickel Ferrites, forming chemical formula Ni1–xCdxFe2O4, where x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4 have been investigated from room temperature to well beyond the Curie temperature. Plots of log (σT) versus 103/T are linear and show a transition near the Curie temperature. The transition temperature is found to decrease with increase of Cd content. On the basis of Seebeck coefficient (S), the ferrites under investigation have been classified as n-type and p-type semiconductors. The values of charge carrier concentration and mobility have been computed from experimental values of Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity. The activation energy in the ferrimagnetic region is in general less than that in the paramagnetic region. An attempt is made to explain the conduction mechanism in these ferrites.

Abstract: The novel 2-[(E)-2-aryl-1-ethenyl]-3-(2-sulfanyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole-5-yl)-3,4- dihydro-4-quinolinones (4a-j) analogs were synthesized by Knoevenagel condensation of a solution of 2-methyl-3-(2-sulfanyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole-5-yl)-3,4-dihydro-4-quinazolinone (3) with aromatic aldehyde in presence of catalytic amount of piperidine. Compounds (4a-j) showed significant biological activity against all the standard strains. All the synthesized compounds were characterized on the basis of their IR, 1H NMR, MASS spectroscopic data and elemental analyses. All the compounds have been tested for antimicrobial and antifungal activity by the cup-plate method.
